Atari has announced its acquisition of Implicit Conversions, a studio specialising in bringing retro games to modern systems, as reported by GamesBeat.

Notably, Implicit Conversions is the team responsible for many of the classic titles made available on PS5 and PS4 as part of PS Plus Premium's range of old games.

The studio now joins the ranks of Atari, a publisher that's becoming something of a powerhouse in the world of emulation and retro gaming.

The company also owns Digital Eclipse and Nightdive, two other teams known for their work on reviving games of yore.

According to the Implicit Conversions website, the studio has had a hand in bringing over a hundred classic titles to modern consoles, including series like Fear Effect, Fighting Force, and Mortal Kombat.

In a statement, Atari CEO Wade Rosen says the publisher now has an "enviable suite of proprietary tools" with the addition of Implicit Conversions and its Syrup engine.

"Implicit Conversions, Atari and their amazing studios have a shared passion for retro games, and a shared belief that accessibility is the cornerstone of preservation," says Implicit Conversions cofounder Robin Lavallée. "We look forward to sharing our expertise and introducing even more important classic titles to new audiences."

One question for those in the PlayStation ecosystem is whether this acquisition will have any impact on the studio's work to bring retro games to PS Plus.

Obviously it's too early to really tell, but we'd wager this probably won't change much for the team. We've reached out to Atari and Implicit Conversions for comment, and will update the story if we hear back.
