Elden Ring Is A24's Biggest Movie Yet with a $100 Million Budget

$100m to make a movie seems cheap considering game development is usually $200m+ for “AAA” games

I continue to be very curious as to what this movie will actually be about. While I love FromSoft games, there aren't really ever stories that you're playing through. Everything has already happened and you, as the player, are putting the pieces together through drip-fed lore.

I really, really hope that the movie is about the story the sets up the game, rather then a retelling of what you play in the game. I just don't see the latter working at all.

Edit: I have the same exact opinion on the Bloodborne movie.

Until Lamb 2: Cruise Control, that is.

Elden Ring movie would need a Lord of the Rings 500 million type of budget and A24 is more miss than hit with their output.

@AnginaPectoris Had to look him up and.... he's too muscular LMSH has the build of a twig but the moves like Jagger, NEXT!

I like this price point. Too small and they can’t execute, too big and they lose vision and risk a massive loss. Another $100 millionish for marketing, so $200-250 million break-even point. 20+ million copies of the game sold is a nice indicator that this could happen. Hope this is a success for A24.

My thoughts exactly. I’m open to anything but this just makes the most sense. There’s a lot of material to work with.

Elden ring lore surely is rich... I always wondered why they don't make more movies like they did FF7 back then... I mean, Elden ring has it's target audience

I have absolutely zero interest in this. Just bring back Uwe Boll so that people can stop pretending making movies of games is worthwhile.

@Metonymy Yeah, I honestly just don't see how making a direct adaptation of the game works. The "story" of the actual game is: random unnamed person shows up in the Lands Between. They kill all the things. Killing all the things somehow makes them Elden Lord. The end.

The lore of Elden Ring is fascinating, but the contemporaneous narrative of the game is basically nonexistent.

@wildcat_kickz Exactly, and looking at the ensemble cast leads me to believe it’ll be more about the political intrigue that sets the game up. There’s a lot of familial (and otherwise) conflict to explore within an already fleshed out and visually distinct world.

Even though From Soft games are among the most overrated ones, really looking forward to the movie because setting and atmosphere obviously are great in the games (too bad the games are just about combat from start to finish)

I just wish it was releasing in 2027 instead for the Zelda comparisons. I don't think they'll be anything alike except for "fantasy" but that would have been enough.

Comparisons will still be made but it won't be the same level of fanboi trolling.

Someone should make a tie-in game for the movie

$100 million sound appropriate if we're looking at the game popularity.

But i'm curious which movie who will end up as a big success, Bloodborne or Elden Ring.
