Sonic the Hedgehog will turn 35 in June, and SEGA has already been celebrating the milestone anniversary in a few fun ways, but it sounds like there's plenty more to come.
In an interview with Variety, Roger Craig Smith, the voice of Sonic in the games (and beyond) for many years, reveals he will be part of IGN Live in the summer.
The event takes place across the 6th and 7th June, in the days following the Summer Game Fest live showcase on the 5th.
When asked if he'll be revealing anything related to Sonic's anniversary during the event, Smith obviously doesn't give a straight answer, but his words have given fans of the character a lot of hope for June.
"What I know that I can say is that I’m extremely excited to be a part of [IGN Live]," he says. "It is such a cool event, and I cannot wait to get out there and be a part of the energy that’s in that room, and get to participate in whatever way they want us to participate."
He continues:
"It’s gonna be a very, very fun event. I wish I could give more details and that kind of thing, but I think that’s for IGN to spill the beans on, and I will play it safe and just go: I’m excited, I can’t wait to be in Los Angeles and be a part of this massive, massive event. It’s the worst thing about my job, I would violate all the NDAs. There’s exciting stuff coming down the pike and I am so stoked for the 35th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog. There couldn’t be a better time to be a part of something like that. So I’m tight lipped but expressing my intrigue and my excitement, we’ll leave it there."
So, he doesn't really confirm or deny anything Sonic-related, but he's definitely being careful talking around the anniversary and his participation in the IGN Live event.
Smith has since backpedaled a little after the article caused a stir in the Sonic community:
Regardless, with the character's anniversary in June, it all lines up very nicely for SEGA to make a splashy announcement, whether at IGN's show or Summer Game Fest itself — presumably the latter.
There's a lot of outcry from fans for Sonic Frontiers 2, or whatever the next mainline Sonic title is. Some also want to see the Adventure games return in some capacity.
It's worth mentioning that an age rating for something called Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition was recently spotted, likely a souped-up version of the game with some enhancements.
Whatever the case may be, we've no doubt there's more on the way to celebrate Sonic's 35th.

Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 remaster collection 🤞😃🤞
@Mio_Nakashima I've been saying that for years, it would sell like hot cakes
@Oram77 4K@120fps & PSSR2. Online battle mode and expanded open world Chao garden with online Chao racing and new mini games. SEGA can do so much and go crazy with it. 😎👍
These announcements always fill me with dread knowing how inconsistent Sega is about their definition of a “big surprise”.
Oh well at least I hope they announce new toys cuz that’s been how I’ve consumed the franchise for a while.
Come on, all you have to do is remaster Adventure 1 & 2, easy money.
Sonic 4: Episode 3! Who knows, a proper follow up to Mania with all new levels would interest me, at this point I don't know what else... wouldn't mind a new release of Lost World as I never got to play it, and looked kind of interesting.
@Mio_Nakashima I actually cannot believe Sega has never once made a stand alone Chao game!!!
