For as popular as ARC Raiders has become, it hasn't gotten away with it completely unscathed; the use of generative AI tools in its development certainly caused a stir.
One way developer Embark Studios uses the technology is for voice lines. Using text-to-speech, some of the dialogue present in the game is not performed by human actors.
We recently learned that there are actually fewer AI voice lines in the game today than there were at launch.
In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Embark's CEO Patrick Söderlund explained that the team has been implementing more and more human voices to replace the AI ones.

"We re-recorded some of the lines post-launch and made them with real voices," he says, noting that there's a "quality difference" moving from AI to human performance. "A real professional actor is better than AI; that's just how it is."
"We look at [AI] first and foremost as a production tool. We can test things internally. We can test 15 different lines without recording them, and then we know what to record. It's also a way for us to work, not replace actors. We don't necessarily believe in replacing humans with AI all the time."
Moreover, Söderlund assures that actors are compensated for all their work, and it sounds like ARC Raiders could keep adding more — though there's still a use for text-to-speech.
"We pay our actors for all time spent with us in the booth and continue to bring many of them back as we carry on updating the game," he says. "For select usage, we also pay them for the approval to license their voices through text-to-speech for lines that aren't as essential to the immersion of the experience, mostly ping system audio."
So, it sounds like Embark isn't about to drop all its AI practices, but it has been updating ARC Raiders with proper voice work, which is good to hear. Söderlund has defended his studio's approach before, and whether you agree with using generative AI or not, the game's success speaks for itself.

Would it be really funny if it turns out the ai voices were better than the actors 😅
This is genuinely great news. The AI voices were un unpleasant aftertaste that sullied an otherwise great looking game.
Awful. This is one of the big first steps to people being totally fine with AI voices for characters. Soon there will be games with entire casts that aren't real people, & if the game is successful enough, I'm sure people will complain & maybe they'll replace the AI with actual voice actors. Then it'll just be a matter of time until there's a studio that does not care about doing the right thing & it won't matter if they're already making money.
I know a few months ago Expedition 33 was in some hot water for not being transparent about AI. I know the end product was great but this should be a reminder that there's no laws regulating this properly & devs can literally tell us whatever they want (they're not obligated to tell the truth) & pretty soon we won't be able to tell the difference.
This sh*t sucks.
@Drago201 Impossible considering all AI voices are the stolen voices of unaccredited, unpaid human voices used without consent.
AI has no original ideas and is incapable of forming original thought. Anything an AI "produces" is just the regurgitated production of a human somewhere that didn't get properly compensated, let alone asked if their work could be used in such manner.
Fantastic news, GenAi should stay as far away from gaming as possible. No exceptions.
@Gunnerzaurus this is a greatly written comment, I agree.
Somewhere there's an AI website where a bunch of AIs in the comments are complaining about humans coming along and stealing their jobs.
@johncalmc I believe that is called Twitter nowadays
On a side note to the article - I haven’t played this game before. Is it worth picking up now, and running solo okay? It seems awesome.
To be honest, I didn't really notice/care about the AI voice lines for the ping system, but am glad they're getting replaced all the same. If they had used AI voices for the actual dialog from quest givers, that would have been way too far for me.
I haven't played this since I put some 12 hrs into it when I 1st picked it up, but I genuinely didn't notice the ai voices. I'm glad they're gone tho lol. One day ill get back into it, it was a lot of fun
@Kraven running solo from my experience was one of the safest ways to play(It's been a while since I played). Obviously there is still a chance you'll get sniped by a guy that's camping or even be betrayed, but a lot of the time you'll meet very friendly people.
@Gunnerzaurus The AI voices used in AR are based on actual real voices who have been paid and have agreed to have their voices used this way. Not saying its right or wrong but calling them stolen, unpaid and used without consent is objectively untrue. Also some actors have sold off their voices as well, for instance James Earl Jones before his death sold his voice to Disney to be used for anything Darth Vader.
