While some might be growing weary of these artsy Metroidvania action games, Never Grave: The Witch and the Curse looks like it's doing things just differently enough to stand out.
Brought to us by Pocketpair Publishing and developer Frontside 180, this is a roguelite action platformer that combines the aesthetics of Hollow Knight: Silksong with the core mechanic of *checks notes* Super Mario Odyssey.
Here's the latest trailer to give you the gist:
You play as a small witch wearing a cursed hat, and while you're capable of progressing and fighting normally, there will be times you need to use your headwear to possess enemies.

Yes, you can take control of different foes and take advantage of their unique moves and abilities to navigate and fight other bad guys.
While this is a Metroidvania, it's a roguelite one, meaning the layouts of each environment will change each time you retry.
You use resources you gather during play to rebuild a hub village, and steadily grow stronger so you can get further with each attempt.
As mentioned, its visual style puts us in mind of Hollow Knight, with an illustrated look and somewhat muted colours. It looks nicely done here.
The game also supports up to four-player online co-op, so you can play the whole thing with some buddies if you like.
It looks pretty good, and what's more, it's not too far off, launching on PS5 and PS4 on 5th March, 2026.

Hollow Knight x Super Mario Odyssey.
The inspiration here is so obvious, but there are certainly worse games to be inspired by.
Gameplay looks great, not a fan of the art style which seems like it tried to mimic Hollow Knight a bit but ends up a bit of a disjointed mess. Incongruous.
I’ll wait for reviews.
It's almost a copycat to hollow knight. There might be lawsuits.
Very hollow knight, which actually put me off.
@zebric21 Doubt it.
You can’t sue people for taking inspiration. If that were possible hollow knight wouldn’t exist.
Jeez its like they took hollow knight and just asset swapped a generic anime witch into it.
I know its legal to do stuff like this but why aren't the Palworld team interested in originality at all? It's just disappointing.
There were metroidvania before hollow btw
@Hi569 It's not about the genre, it's about the visual style. But this also seems to have very similar movement/combat flow as Hollow Knight. The inspiration is very obvious.
Well there are games who look even more like Hollow Knight: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1614330/Crowsworn/
Best thing of the SoP
@KoopaTheGamer it literally looks like an asset swap.
I'm sure its not because they are well versed at this point at litigation, copyright laws and how to get around them, but I think this kind of development shouldn't be encouraged.
Hollow Knight didn't invent dark caves, this looks distinctly like its own thing. People are brain broken by Palworld discourse
@zebric21 between demonizing Nintendo over the recent patenting smokescreens and unironically expecting a game to be sued for tapping into established gameplay features, gamers really need to choose one.
@Kingy nah, I remember when Gleamlight was likewise bashed as an alleged "Hollow Knight clone" well before anyone had even heard of Palworld.
@nhSnork True, there was also that crow game that got dragged for being too close to Hollow Knight. I guess we've been at this point where every Metroidvania is now a Hollow Knight just like every 3D action game is now a Dark Souls
Will definitely be picking this up, love my rogues and vania’s.
I will never understand why some rogue-likes also get referred to as metroidvanias. The defining features of each genre is how progression & exploration work. And they seem incompatible by definition! I don’t see how any game can possibly be both!
This looks absolutely incredible! The art style and fast-paced combat are giving me major Silksong vibes, and I am completely here for it. While we wait for more news, I've been checking out casino reviews on https://najboljseigralnice.si/ to find some entertaining new games. It's a great review site for discovering reliable online casinos. Really hoping this new Metroidvania gets a release date soon, it's shot to the top of my most-anticipated list
