PS5 PS3 US Sales

The PS5 has now overtaken the PS3 in terms of lifetime sales in the US.

That's according to the latest data from ever-informative Circana (formerly NPD) analyst Mat Piscatella, who reports that Sony's current-gen console topped the PS3 as of September this year.

Those of you who were around for the PS3 generation may remember the struggles that the system endured — especially across its first couple of years on the market.

Indeed, the Xbox 360 was wildly popular in the US, to the point where the PS3 couldn't quite compete on the same level. However, the system would eventually go on to outsell Microsoft's less expensive machine worldwide.

It moved around 87 million units when all was said and done, with roughly 23 million of those sales being made in the US.

So, it's no huge surprise to see the PS5 jump PlayStation's worst-selling home console to date — but given that the PS5's meant to be sticking around for at least another two or three years, it makes for a healthy benchmark.

How far do you think the PS5 will climb? Will it surpass the PS4, or will it start to stall? Dare to mention the PS6 in the comments section below.
