In an announcement we’re almost certain dev Dovetail has made specifically for yours truly, Metro Rivals: New York is an all-new Train Sim World spin-off designed to capture the arcade feel of Crazy Taxi and Need for Speed.
If you’re not a fan of the studio’s main game – which requires you to operate trains precisely, and follow the rules of the rails – this Unreal Engine 5 spin-off promises a “simcade” alternative where you’ll be racing trains in both single player and multiplayer modes.
Studio co-CEO Gemma Brown said:
“Metro Rivals: New York feels gritty, fast-paced, and full of energy. It keeps you on your toes and blends the attitude of New York with the thrill of a competitive simcade racing experience – think Crazy Taxi meets Need for Speed: Underground.”
Oh, we’re listening, Gemma!
According to the press release, the game will be set in the near-future, where the New York subway system is controlled by celebrities known as Track Titans. Your goal is to conquer the rail network and become one of them.
“To rise, you’ll need to hustle: complete jobs, get cash, build your following, earn respect – and with it – the prestige to challenge each Titan for their territory,” the blurb reads. “Outwit them. Outdrive them. Outshine them. Only then can you become the undisputed ruler of the underground.”
There’ll be a full single player campaign, as well as multiplayer for up to four participants. The game is also running in Unreal Engine 5 with full Lumen and Nanite support, so it should look the part too.
This is Dovetail taking everything it’s learned from Train Sim World and expanding it out to a new audience. For our tastes, it’s probably one of the more exciting announcements we’ve seen all year, and we can’t wait for this to launch in 2026.
It’s particularly amusing that between this and Denshattack, there are now two totally different arcade-style train games in development for PS5.
All aboard!
