Oh, how we loved Scarface: The World Is Yours on PS2.
This PS2 crime caper first launched in 2006, about a month prior to the PS3 in the United States, and it was an awesome send-off for the system in our opinion.
While it was, in many ways, a GTA clone, we really loved building up our criminal empire and simply existing within Tony Montana’s world.
A turn-based spin-off was also made for the PSP, which got worse reviews at the time but we also really liked.
And for a fleeting moment, there was belief the release could be resurrected.
Largely unknown Hong Kong publisher EC Digital uploaded a Steam page for the title, then accidentally deployed a build on the Epic Games Store.
This raised many questions about the validity of the re-release, and whether the company even had rights to the title at all.
(Remember, this kind of title is a licensing nightmare, with movie rights holders and more all involved.)
Now the company has basically come out and admitted it never had the rights to re-release the title in the first place.
In an update on Steam, it said:
“The current page was initially intended as a placeholder while we worked through ongoing licensing and technical matters. Unfortunately, the unintended release of certain builds on other platforms caused unexpected complications and concerns. Because of that, we feel it’s necessary to pause and reevaluate.”
This strikes us as a scam that got out of hand, but if EC Digital does have any kind of credibility, then perhaps it will get the license it needs to re-release the game.
We hope this sorry saga at least convinces someone to bring back the original, even if it’s purely part of Sony’s PS Plus Premium emulation scheme.
The original game was great, and while it won’t have aged particularly well, it’s definitely worth revisiting if you’re a fan of old open world games.

Sounds like they was poking around to see what would occur and now are retreating temporarily 🤔🤔🤔
It would be cool to see a remake of this game 👀
I paid some guys to rebrand the game to Czarface and upload it to Steam, but I should have suspected it won't be smooth since their only experience was working on LOTR: Gollum.
This desperately needs a sequel.
Say goodbye to my little friend.
It was an absolute blast - I remember for the time, although it obviously did emulate a lot of GTA themes, it also had some original and well implemented ideas. Great world, music and decent graphics (for the time) too.
I’d love to see it resurface, pipedream would be a remake, prequel or spin-off.
As soon as this appeared it was obviously never going to release. There was no chance they'd got the licence for the movie or music contained within.
I would love to see this game get a re-release or remake as it was a great alternative to GTA and a fun what if for the end of the movie. Though I am thankful they tried this nonsense as it reminded me to aquire it through other means and I played a bit last night, still great fun
Really was hoping this was going to be real. Loved thos game on PS2.
Theirs so many PS2 titles like this just begging for a port if you can get through the licensing roadblock.
I remember this being a solid 7/10 experience.
Would not the music licensing alone be impossible nowadays?
I loved this game, the music was great, the world was fun, and I enjoyed having the mansion.
But I remember very clearly having an issue where in order to continue I needed to upgrade the mansion and at one point every option was greyed out and unselectable, thus ending my game prematurely. Was so sad!
Scarface, The Getaway and Roadkill (a game I'm sure no one's ever heard of) are my top three in wanting a current gen version, whether it's a remaster or otherwise. Chrono Trigger is a runner-up but that's only because it's on mobile and DS. And the DS holds up VERY well even today.
That would be awsome say hello to my little friend. Scarface is up there top 5 movies ever made.and the ps2 scarface the world is yours is a amazing game.word up son
I know I played this game on PS2 but I don't remember anything or I didn't... I remember playing Godfather and Mafia though.
@ItsAlwaysSunnyyy Scarface and Deathrow are my dream re-releases.
The Wii edition of Scarface used motion controls to let you hack people to pieces with the chainsaw. It was friggin AWESOME. Makes me want to track down a Wii and a copy of the game. It was that much fun to me.
I never got to play this game but I lived it having grown up in the 70s/80s in Miami during the whole Cocaine Cowboys era. But instead of Tony Montana, we had Griselda Blanco. It was absolute insanity. Would have loved to play a remaster and finally check it out.
@MFTWrecks LMAO The fact that a game ("Scarface", no less) let you attack people with a Chainsaw on a Nintendo Console has made me realize that I can't possibly be on "Main-Line Earth" and must be on an alternate Earth!!!
"We were trying to stealth post this & grab some preorder money & disappear but now there's been so much attention we're getting DCMA'd! "🤯😱😂
Would buy a remaster day one. Would even back a kickstarter. Really loved the PS2 game, was a lot of fun.
@Mikeg1965 It was weird, but GTA had appeared on Nintendo consoles before, it was just that they were all Gameboy/handheld versions of the titles iirc.
I've always kicked myself that I never finished Scarface. I got it on Wii but then shortly after getting it, I got a PS3 and pretty much abandoned my Wii and ended up selling it without ever finishing Scarface (among many other non-classic Wii titles). Big whiff on my part!
@MFTWrecks Didn't realize it was on Wii but I absolutely loved MadWorld for similar reasons hahaha.
I've never heard of Deathrow but it looks a lot of fun! There are so many games from generations ago that are just gone and will never come back. It's a bit sad and one of the reasons why I still use my PS3 nearly as much as my PS5. I've got The Saboteur to play and ModNation Racers, and I've also gotten a Retroid for some classics - although emulation is never ever the same
Interesting to see.
Also before Hit and Run not getting a re-release hmm.
Two of the past movie games from the ps2 era that need to be remade are scarface and the warriors, I would love this to happen
