ModNation Racers was a scrappy but outrageously popular kart racer on the PS3.
The game – part of Sony’s big “play, create, share” push at the time – allowed fans to design their own characters, courses, and karts. It was actually originally developed by United Front Games, the Canadian studio behind Sleeping Dogs.
But its servers were taken offline in 2018, rendering the release pretty pointless without many of its key features supported.
Now industrious fans have found a way to get the title working as intended again, utilising private servers. The feedback on Reddit has been impressive, with lobbies fairly full of returning fans.
All you need to do to participate is set your PS3’s primary DNS to 45.32.179.33. You can find out more information and instructions through here. You will, obviously, need an original copy of the game to play.
Are you considering going back to this PS3 classic to run a few laps? Let us know in the comments section, and be sure to share some of your favourite memories about the racer as well.

This was one of the best kart racers on console!!!
Just curious, can you access online if you bought the game digitally?
Absolutely loved ModNation Racers on the PS3.
The only downside about the game was the atrociously long load times, but other than that, probably the best Kart Racer I've ever played.
Another dormant IP that Sony seems content to just ignore.
R.I.P United Front Games
This game needs a rerelease. I don't have a PS3 anymore.
@N1ghtW1ng They should port it and fix the load times it would be amazing
I enjoyed it back in the day, but I wanna have a word with the genius who programmed the whole map creator to load before each race: loading times were longer than races themselves.
Hah! That was a gudden!
Missed out on this series and Motorstorm 😒
@SoulsBourne128 hopefully someone can confirm for sure but I'd say yes - the IP change shouldn't matter digital or physical. Kind of related, I played and platted War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron on PS3, physical copies to be fair, and it worked extremely well. The private server has been up for years but I was still finding full matches a couple years ago! Was insane and so much fun.
As an FYI private servers are not supported by PSNProfiles generally speaking so you'll have to hide the game from your profile or you'll get a warning. Sadly.
I enjoyed modnation racers back in the day too bad I don’t have my ps3 anymore
If only we could get a sequel or spin off to sleeping dogs.
Private servers are a great thing, played some old PS2 games using them which was cool. Dreamcast too!
I loved this game! I think I spent as much time making custom characters as I did racing.
This is the sort of thing I miss from Sony.
I remember playing quite a bit of this back in the ps3 era. I think I still have my copy as well.
I'd definitely put this game on my radar if it ever gets rebooted on the PS5.
I adored this game. I never really got into making tracks but this was just a delightful, solid kart racer. I loved making my own characters and karts.
@tameshiyaku And how did this game remind you of Sleeping Dogs exactly? Just asking... for a friend 😜
@ItsAlwaysSunnyyy dang lol is there a way to hide it? I have my account up on PSN Profiles.
I love these fans bringing these PS3 games back online.
I put an ungodly amount of hours on this game and a fair amount on the Vita version too, rough as it was. I'm surprised other kart racers haven't copied the weapon system, allowing you to stack & make more powerful weapons.
Loved the games on PS3 and Vita. It's a shame that ModNation never really took off; it's one of those series - likewise LittleBigPlanet, LBK Karting and Dreams - that could've thrived on PC, given the chance.
Cant beat Kevin Butlers ads for this game "Hes half horse half motorcycle" and mod nation racers brings out the MUUUUUSE in me and goes on to get beat by Jack Tretton (so the ad makes out)
@SoulsBourne128 Yeah you gotta hide the game from your profile, go to trophies > hide I think. Nothing is confirmed yet but if it's open source it means they can confirm if trophies are unlocked unfairly or not, and if not then it'll be allowed. Let's see how long it'll take but I think I'm going to grab the game from CeX regardless!
I enjoyed Modnation Racers’ campaign but didn’t get much out of the UGC (which I played with my kids a bit though they preferred LBP2’s UGC). Maybe if I was playing the best tracks competitively with randoms I would feel differently about it.
@Nakatomi_Uk YES YES YES! Outrageously clever and hilarious! I still miss KB a lot, have to go back and watch those commercials again every so often 🥲👍🏼
