Publisher Koei Tecmo has announced Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake, and the terrifying photography-based survival horror title is in development for PS5.
Bringing back one of the series' best-loved and spookiest entries, the remake (from developer Team Ninja) is due for release in early 2026. Here's the announce trailer:
Crimson Butterfly originally launched in 2003 on PS2, and more than two decades later, it's getting the remake treatment, with "a complete overhaul", according to the press release.

This includes enhanced sound and visuals, as you'd expect, as well as "improvements to core gameplay systems and controls". In other words, it should look and play better than ever on PS5.

What? What? What? I can't believe this. This is the best news of the year for me! People really don't know what I'm feeling right now, I'll update the Official Thread.
I wonder what they'll do with III The Tormented, the title that they're skipping for now.
As I say about each and every remake: I'd rather have a new game.
No, it did not take two decades for a remake. It was actually remade for the first time back in 2012: Project Zero 2 Wii Edition. It was actually a great remake but it was only released in EU, JP and AU, never in America.
I still have it but I guess it’s time to update to the PS5 version.
This obsession with remakes is getting thoroughly depressing.
A re-remake 😂
I guess KT doesn't have a clue how to do Fatal Frame 6 and decided to milk Fatal Frame 2 again with another remake 😂
Yeah i'm gonna skip this re-remake. I enjoyed the original PS2 game and i bought the PS2 classic for PS3. I think the og still looks and plays good so i stick with them.
But i reccomend it for anyone who never play this game.
The first game is the scariest, but II is definitely the best one by a wide margin. I really don't like the look of this remake though. For anyone interested, give the original a shot first.
I would like to get into the series, I have only heard of the games just recently. Might start with this one when it releases
Personally never found the Fatal games to be scary, but the second is defiantly the best one, all depends how much it's going to cost
@Brundleflies21 Indeed. I'm personally okay with remake for old games that has bad graphics, very outdated UI & control, bad translations, but the gameplay was quite fun or has potentials.
But for games that still looks and plays good like this game, remake feels unnecessary. Not every games needs remakes.
I'm excited about this... Counting all forms of media only two things have truly scared me, Fatal Frame 2 and Umineko
My favourite game of all time I hope it's good I'm a little annoyed it's based on the Wii Version with the over the shoulder camera but with this series I have to take what I can get. Mio and Mayu look amazing
This was a great surprise in today's Direct. Makes sense that they went with Crimson Butterfly first. I'm hoping that Fatal Frame 3 gets a remake as well.
@Ashina I hope we get remakes of 3 and 1 as well, now that they have this remake on a modern engine (what engine is it?).
Correction: the second best. The title of the best goes to Fatal Frame 3. Still good news though.
@PuppetMaster Treasure Island Dizzy however...
@PuppetMaster Maybe it didn't need a remake, sure, but it at least needs to be brought to modern platforms. I don't know about you, but not everyone has been playing video games for 20+ years. There's a lot of people who are new to video games and there are some, like me, who only got really invested in the hobby during the late Xbox 360/PS3 generation. I missed out on a lot of the games from the PS1/2 era and prior, so I'm happy that we're getting these old games on modern platforms.
I never played this, but I always wanted to! Here is my chance!
@Questionable_Duck Exactly. Moreover, the enhanced Xbox versions of I and II are not backwards compatible on Xbox One and Series X|S, the remake of 2 was not released in America and III is stuck on PS2 and PS3 store and not available on PS4/PS5, not to mention that 4 was a Wii Japan exclusive and 5 a Wii U exclusive until the remasters.
if you loved it a remake is great news
if you haven't played it a remake is great news.
if you have played it and wasnt a fan then no harm done dont play the remake
I don’t know what this Fatal Frame you speak of is, but I’m a big Project ZERO fan (and clearly old)!
@Questionable_Duck I never say i'm against port / remaster old games for modern hardware, especially if those old games never get port even once.
@Brundleflies21 This is the first time i heard the title haha.
@PuppetMaster The original may still look and play great, but it also sells for a hundred dollars for a used copy on eBay and nearly twice that for a new one. And not everyone still has access to a PS2 anyway.
Time to buy it for a fourth time. Hopefully it includes both mission and survival modes.
@Stevemalkpus Well you can get a cheap PS3 slim and grab the PS2 classic which i believe only $9 bucks from PS store. But if you don't want an old console like PS3 then go get this remake.
Hopefully we get a physical release, unlike the two ports of the other games.
Wow this was not what I expected, it kinda sucks that it is a remake though. Personally I would have just loved a trilogy remaster because I really want to play the third game.
@Shadcai I was thankfully able to get a physical release of 5 through an import
I need to fine a copy on PS3! My new thing is playing PS3 games. Way better generation than PS5.
I just started to play Spiderman: Shadow of the web. And this has to be one of the best Spider-Man game I've ever played.
@PuppetMaster I see, my bad. I thought you were against re-releases of old games in general.
Preordering when available. Very excited for this
Nice to see Fatal Frame, hopefully this can lead to getting a brand new game for PS.
Great news as I've never played it.
This was the best news of the entire direct for me! This series is criminally underrated. The gameplay, the mood and the audio and the story! Glad it’s getting a remake as it seems that Koei is putting a bit more money behind it rather than a remaster like (4 and 5) just hope we get a physical version unlike (4 and 5) hopefully we get a fatal frame 6! Or they’ll need to remake the first game before the third for story purposes 😊
@MeerkatSimples Criminally underrated, indeed. Each Fatal Frame/Project Zero game (now officially renamed to Fatal Frame worldwide) develops a story and theme subtly and cohesively. Japanese have a different approach to horror that I find much deeper and meaningful, yet the gameplay is so satisfying. That camera loading sound!
@Banjo- do you think them renaming project zero in Europe to fatal frame is a hint that could actually be more than one title in development? Be a bit pointless to just do it for one game?
Yeah this game is the kinda horror game I like rather than shooting horrors even though they are great too xD
@Brundleflies21 so don’t buy it problem solved
@MeerkatSimples Yeah, Resident Evil is a different kind of fun that I also like! This Fatal Frame is a remake, but it's also some kind of reboot, with the Fatal Frame name (that I prefer) in all regions, the Japanese logo in the background and the new font, so I bet you're right and there are more reboots coming on this engine. It doesn't make sense to change everything for one title. The remasters sold relatively well and I suppose that their reception motivated a bigger effort.
Huh, I thought nintendo own this franchise, cool it's available in ps5. I played the original back on ps2 and man it's scary, not "I only have little bullets left" scary, but "I don't want to be here anymore" scary lol.
I never finished the game back then, I think I'll try finishing it with this remake.
@wiiware It will be released on all platforms like the remasters. Nintendo only had the publishing rights for a while, although they also took part in the development of Mask of the Lunar Eclipse.
@Muscleblackcop So don't read it. Problem solved.
@Brundleflies21 I will read you darling so welcome to the family
@Muscleblackcop Call me Captain Darling and I'll be yours forever my sweet sugar plum.
@Brundleflies21 what son?
