Streets of Rage 4 was a collaboration between two studios, and one of them, Guard Crush Games, is on the verge of launching its next project, Absolum.
Coming to PS5 and PS4 on 9th October, publisher Dotemu has released a new gameplay trailer for this very promising-looking beat-'em-up, and it gives us a great look at what to expect:
Absolum is a fantasy 2D brawler with multiple playable characters. You adventure through the land of Talamh, and the journey incorporates a roguelite structure, meaning it'll be a little different each time you play through it.

As you progress, you'll gain various buffs and abilities to bolster your character in all kinds of ways during the run. You will also be able to unlock permanent upgrades so you're better equipped each time.
It's looking pretty dang good in this trailer; the game combines Guard Crush's gameplay and combat focus with the art and animation of Supamonks, and the result seems strong from where we're sitting.
There's not long to go now before the game's out. What do you make of Absolum based on this new video? Are you excited to dive in? Tell us in the comments section below.

I played a lot of Golden Axe in my formative years, so I absolutely crave games like this.
I'm very excited to get going with Absolum. I've been hyped for a while, but that new trailer has me legit giddy.
Feels like it would be perfect for the Portal too.
@Shepherd_Tallon The latency inherit to the Portal would make it a big no for me on that.
Was interested till I saw roguelite
Oh, man. This has all the elements I love in a video game. So looking forward to it. Being a roguelite makes it an absolute must for me, after realizing I love the genre.
@MrPeanutbutterz I've been lucky enough to upgrade my internet recently. (My house was one of the last places in my town to get fibre. It was an annoying wait.)
Since I've gotten it Portal runs like it's playing local. I love it.
Before fibre though it wasn't great. I was still getting broadband through the old copper wire.
I've always argued that rogue-lites (and rogue-likes) are very much modern extensions of the classic arcade formula where you replay "the same" experiences using your knowledge to further your progress. It's just that -lites have added a meta progression system to ease that burden and provide variety.
This is a perfect example of that. It looks like a great modern take on side scrolling beat 'em ups, a genre whose fans have been eating well lately. Between this and the Marvel space one, I myself am very pleased and will be set for a good while.
@Smackosynthesis
Same.
"Crafted with passion by the dream team that redefined side-scrolling beat 'em ups..."
Go on.
"...Absolum mixes top-of-the-class combat action..."
Cool Cool.
"...with modern roguelite elements."
Nope. I'm out.
Looks great. Love me some well animated beat em ups.
Been talking about this one for a while, since playing the demo on steam. It's good fun. Mentioned plenty of times, but I really feel the rogue-lite progression elevates it above the typical beat-em-up, where nothing much changes from run to run. Good to have a meta-game.
@Shepherd_Tallon Fibre is a big jump for sure!
I got it last year, and finally hardwired the console. I finished R&C Into The Nexus via streaming. Could feel the latency, but was still perfectly playable.
@MrPeanutbutterz Yeah it's definitely not perfect, but it's getting better all the time.
It's not exactly the way I want to primarily play my games either, but it's a nice supplement.
