We don't see it talked about much, but World of Tanks is quietly one of the most successful and enduring free-to-play games available.

It may not have the most impressive player numbers, but it's been remarkably consistent over the years.

While the main, full-fat game itself isn't on consoles, developer Wargaming has created a brand new, standalone title set to release on everything — World of Tanks: Heat.

This spin-off is a free-to-play, cross-platform competitive multiplayer game coming to PS5.

The idea is still purely tank-based battles — 10v10 in Heat — but this new game is aiming for something a little more fast-paced and streamlined.

It even goes so far as to introduce hero shooter-like aspects across various classes, lending your chosen vehicle character-specific abilities in addition to its own unique firepower.

You choose an Agent and your tank to suit, some specialising in long-range engagements while others are more armoured and suited to close range skirmishes.

Set in an alternate, post-WWII history, the tanks are unique designs, albeit still inspired by real-world vehicles. They can be customised and personalised with cosmetics as well as weapon and skill loadouts to suit your play style.

World of Tanks: Heat will adapt various well-known multiplayer modes (Kill Confirmed, Domination, Conquest etc.) to its style, so there should be a fun mix of Deathmatch-style modes as well as more objective-based ones.

The game is described as free-to-win; in other words, you can't purchase gameplay-affecting microtransactions. Instead, monetisation focuses on cosmetics, battle passes, and time-savers.

There's no date in place for World of Tanks: Heat, but it is available to wishlist and will release simultaneously across all platforms.
