Ubisoft has announced 2023 game Assassin's Creed Mirage will, all of a sudden, be receiving a new DLC for free, set in AlUla, Saudi Arabia. The news was shared at the Esports World Cup in Saudi Arabia, following reports the Saudi-backed Savvy Games firm would be providing the funding for such an expansion.
Publicly, Ubisoft has said the following: "Assassin's Creed Mirage players, we have a surprise coming your way later this year!" There'll be a new story chapter, missions, and a new playable area set in 9th-century AlUla.
As the French publisher is all-in on Assassin's Creed Shadows at the moment, with its own first expansion releasing on the PS5 next month, the announcement of new Assassin's Creed Mirage content is a surprise. It'll even have "gameplay improvements" for the base game, which will expand to the new location.
The reports of such a deal between Ubisoft and Saudi Arabia came from French outlet Les Echoes at the start of this year. While Ubisoft had planned to keep Assassin's Creed Mirage as a single release with no additional content, it was suggested Saudi Arabia is now providing the funding for DLC following meetings. We now know an expansion will be set in Saudi Arabia.

Can't fault a freebie. Mind you the game was average (and that's being kind) but will reinstall it for this. I hope Shadows is better but will wait for a sale on that one...
For free? No complaints here…
This franchise should have been in its grave long ago and I'm surprised there's still a fanbase...or a fanbase for any Ubi game at this point.
@TruestoryYep Why wouldn't good games have a fan base 🤔.
Deary me, that does sound dodgy. They’ve released a whole AC game since Mirage but now all of a sudden here’s a Saudi expansion? Paid for by blood money no less.
It's no secret what's happening here...
That said though, Mirage is awesome so I'll definitely hop in for this. It's free after all so why not?
Thanks Saudi, I guess. Can’t complain if expansions are free. As long as there isn’t any attempt at historical revisionism and it remains pure fantasy.
@TruestoryYep I've never understood the hate for Ubisoft. Sure their games aren't groundbreaking, but name me one genuinely bad game they've made?
It is weird that this has just seemingly come out of nowhere.
I mean, I suppose the positive here is that it's a definite value add for people who already own the game.
The situation around it is undeniably murky though.
Ubisoft can die in a ditch.
Wow Mirage was 2023, did'nt think it was that long ago. Regardless i enjoyed it and will play this dlc, i enjoy Ubisoft games (I'm obviously not a "real" gamer 🤣)
Mirage is on my list to play so any free dlc is great.
Good for the game, but this does sound super sus 🤐🤫🤔👀
I sold the game a while ago not seeing any reason to keep it. Oh well.
Mirage was good for what it was, a trimmed down AC experience, but I've got everything I wanted to out of it and no amount of suspicious DLC will get me to return.
Great news!! I will reinstall and play it when it comes! Probably I will be playing Shadows already too, so 2 Assassin's Creed games at once!
@TruestoryYep what's wrong with ubisoft games , they're generally entertaining , offer value for money, consistently offer free content , and they look and sound great , really don't get why there's so much hate.
Free's free so can't complain but yeah its a bit questionable to say the least.
Not a massive fan of playing dlc in general, little weird to some maybe, but I've already platinumed so unlikely to hop back in for this.
@Bentleyma
That's the problem with them. Ubisoft make offensively bland games.
They're the video game equivalent of Disney's modern cinematic output: easily digestible slop to entertain the easily pleased pumped out as frequently as possible to keep profits high and shareholders happy.
They're not bad – they can't be by design – but they're so safe and by the numbers that they're actively offensive to anyone who actually engages their brain.
Ubi weirded me out when I initiated a trail of heart shaped responses as yasuke and things took a turn, so I’ll probably leave them alone for a bit
i didn't expect dlc for this game at all , i still have to finish it up , but i'm so behind in so many games , but i've enjoyed it a good amount , also the prince of persia sands of time weapons are still some of my favorite looking weapons in ac games.
Im not a fan of the unnecessary negativity towards AC games, but Ubisoft does just open itself out to controversy with things like this.
It will be interesting to see how the DLC presents SA... and whether it will be titled something like "The greatest AC DLC ever!" .
Free DLC is always welcome
@Rich33 i mean it does make sense with the main part of the game taking place in Baghdad. so its not completely random
the saudis funding the expansion feels like they really want to push their country
i mean we have seen them funding lots of stuff in several major fields and this is no different
i mean at least the expansion is free so makes it worth it to reinstall the game
the question remains to me what they get out of this but i will not complain about free dlc
@twitchtvpat
Fair point - but the whole SA funds free DLC taking place in SA does raise a lot of questions - admittedly though, we wont know the answer to these questions until the DLC lauches.
I don't understand, are we supposed to be inclusive of everyone except Saudi?
Does this mean we'll see CR7 as a playable character ?
@daveofduncan
Free extra content for a game especially if its one you personally like is never a bad thing.
@Bentleyma No just mediocre games with the same old games every time
People hate Ubisoft because they only do "average" games. Their games are shallow, by the numbers canon fodders. As long as they continue the formula they cracked with FC3 nearly 13 years ago, this perception will continue and rightfully so. Thanks God we see some hope though with latest Avatar and Star Wars games flopping. AC-Shadow not selling as much as Valhalla is a great outcome too.
Edit: Only "good" game from Ubi I can remember in a long time is PoP-Lost Crown and Watch Dogs 2(from what I heard about this at least).
They are the "Jason Statham" of gaming.
free is good and all but Saudi Arabia attempting to push itself as a cool soft power is the equivalent of diarrhoea being rebranded as an energy drink.
Wish We could have Gotten a PS5 Upgrade for Origins and Odyssey but hey I'll take A Free Expansion DLC.

@Fartingale obviously it's different but the US is awful in many ways. How do you draw the line nowadays? America is erasing history, trying to take over states with the military, ignoring political assassinations if they're from another party, trying rigging elections through gerrymandering to stay in power, not to mention the gun violence, intent government racism, the rewriting of history (e.g. the museums), and trying to go backwards of women's rights and gay rights. People still buy US made games 🤷♂️
@Deljo yes, yes. Inclusive of everyone including former members of Axis, because that's totally the point.
The future sure sucks.
@Bentleyma Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, those two NFT games, Hooters: Road Trip, a whole bunch of Rabbid games, AC Unity, and Watchdogs. But yeah a lot of times they are at least competent. I usually burn out on them as they get too repetitive and long in the tooth.
I also think the early AC games play terribly, and played terribly when they were current, even. Yes .Black Flag included.
They do a lot of scummy stuff and they have a homogenous style of Ubergame that they make over and over and over. I think that's more the issues people have w them.
@DreadfulDragon ahhh yes the old “I’m smarter than the masses because I don’t like Ubisoft” take.
Cool rant, but there’s not really any insight here beyond “I don’t like Ubisoft and I’m smarter than you if you do.”

@ItsAlwaysSunnyyy I get you... but couldnt one argue the point that America is also creating history too. I know it may not be palatable to those that are not far right but they are creating a moment in history that's not going to be forgotten.
@DreadfulDragon I quite enjoy your comments. I find them well worded and thought out but I think that you may be banging your head against a brick wall. I agree with you on most of what you have to say. For what it's worth the last really good ubisoft game I really enjoyed was AC odyssey and I platinumed that..fell asleep half way through valhalla.
@Northern_munkey Oh I'm well aware that pretty much every word that comes out of my mouth is likely to be met with apathy, denial, dismissal, mockery or – if I'm really lucky – outrage.
But I'm not going to let that keep me from speaking my mind as the moment I fall silent is the moment I let others dictate the rules on what I can and cannot say.
The last AC game I enjoyed was Black Flag. I picked up Origins and about 8 hours in to it before I realised I'd played this game years earlier when I'd played Far Cry 3.
That was about the time I realised that Ubisoft were working from a template and that their output was not aimed at people like myself.
@DreadfulDragon for the record I agree their games are safe bet and you are entitled to your opinion. I just don’t agree with your belittling people who enjoy it thinking you are on a higher intellectual plane for avoiding.
I don’t care about Ubisoft or your opinion of their games I just don’t like people like you with your derogatory comments thinking you are better than everyone else.
Oh nice, I really liked playing this game.
@DreadfulDragon and yet, when FromSoft pump out the same indistinguishable production-line product for the tenth consecutive time, people like you line up to laud them.
@UniBoss75 I mean, I'd be just as critical of FROMSoft if they pushed out committee designed games every 12 months... but they don't.
It's really not so much about the end products themselves as on the surface level there's not a whole lot to distinguish them. But like any artform, video games become imbued with the passion poured into them by their creators that shines through every aspect of the finished product.
When you create art without passion the end results might be superficially impressive but bereft of character, depth or soul.
Such work isn't designed to be cherished or remembered in 20 years. It's designed to part fools from their money (and in the case of video games, keep on parting them from their money as frequently and often as they possibly can.)
And that is the difference between Fromsoft's output (except maybe Dark Souls 2&3.) and Ubisoft's.
Fromsoft make games with passion that is clear in every single facet of the finished release. They're not concerned if little Johnny No-knob can't beat the first level as they're not trying to appease the mainstream in order to rake in all their money (that they've managed to do just that is a happy little accident.)
Ubisoft make games to sell as many copies as possible and meet whatever metrics are necessary to appease shareholders and as such the end products are stripped of any real character or soul to present games that are as bland, safe, banal and mediocre as possible in order to be as appealing and accessible to as many people as humanly possible.
@DreadfulDragon Literally every single From game looks and plays exactly the same as the last one. They just don’t sell as well as Ubi games
Removed - disrespecting others
@DreadfulDragon “I don’t know what I’m talking about” but in every From game, the controls are the same, the assets are samey, the bosses are samey. Every game follows the same loop of “travel to this dungeon and defeat this boss”. Literally the only new thing in Elden Ring is the addition of a mount. The gameplay in Elden Ring and Demon’s Souls is almost exactly identical.
And yet, for some reason, From disciples have somehow decided they’re more worthy than other studios because their games don’t have a difficulty setting and based on some nebulous idea that From are somehow “more passionate” and aren’t just another developer with executives and shareholders who demand profits.
@betasector That’s a bit harsh but maybe you’re not far off🤣 the publishers/developers have lost their way imho, they don’t make good games anymore.
@Fartingale lol🤣
@DreadfulDragon It just goes to show that gamers have different tastes, AC Black flag was utter garbage, I played some of the game on PC then lost interest.
@torquex I don't have any ill will towards the devs, except the upper mid management, and the CEO. They ruined multiple franchises in a very short time. The company itself can ***** off already.
Clair Obscure is the perfect game to demonstrate how ***** Ubi is.
What is truly free I'd say.
@betasector Can you remember Rainbow Six Lockdown? What a Letdown that game was, in fact if I recall, some called it R6 Letdown, Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six , Ghost Recon all followed the same mediocre path. They lost their way, AC Shadows boring imho.

@Scottyy They are the "Jason Statham" of gaming. - Spot on!
What a surprise 🤣
@wilky2988 its not free, thousands of people die and are imprisoned by the Saudi Royal family every day.
Enjoy your freebie but keep in mind its to distract you from this fact. You can retain this info and still play the free content, win win
Nice one, look forward to giving it a go. Loved the base game.
Little something for the virtue signallers. Keep in mind your fav plastic game box maker also has a nice decades old sideline selling optical systems for missiles to the Military Industrial Complex. Something to consider while atop your high white horses.
