The games industry in China is booming right now, and Swords of Legends looks to be the next promising project out of the region. Revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live, this is actually a new entry in a series dating back 15 years.
However, this is the first Western release in the GuJian franchise, and you can see the debut trailer above.
This is a single player action RPG built in Unreal Engine 5 that draws inspiration from Chinese literature and folklore. It's part of a pre-existing series, but has been designed to be playable standalone.
Here's the setup, as per developer Aurogon Shanghai:
In Swords of Legends, players take on the title of Si Pan, an Underworld Enforcer - dead yet reborn - who wields mystical techniques, divine artifacts, and powerful weapons against a host of otherworldly horrors. Summon captured souls to fight by your side, bind enemies in place with spiritual seals, or unleash devastating multi-target attacks to turn the tide of battle. Every foe presents a unique challenge, inviting strategic mastery of your abilities to exploit their weaknesses.
Off the back of Black Myth: Wukong and its huge success, more Chinese games are being localised for Western audiences. Swords of Legends joins Phantom Blade Zero as promising titles from the country. It sounds like you'll be able to try the game before launch, as a press release mentions beta tests and demos.

This actually looked really good.
I watched this trailer trying to decide if it was Phantom Blade 0, Tides of Annilation, Lost Soul Aside or Wucgang Fallen Feathers. Turns out it wasn't any of those. Does every game on PS5 just unreal engine now or is every game just trying to look like Elden Ring?
To be fair why wife thinks every game looks like Ghost of Tsushima so it might just be me.
I also think Switch 2 games all look like GameCube games so maybe my brain is just broken and trying to find context for things? 😩
These Eastern inspired soulslikes all blending together. It looks good from technical standpoint and demo is a good decision I guess.
@rjejr These games have a completely different engine, artstyle and higher graphics than Elden Ring. ER doesn't use Unreal Engine 5.
@Scottyy None of them are Soulslikes apart from Wuchang.
@TruestoryYep
Sure Jan.
Sure is purty what say. Saturation; I’ll revel naked in the monsoon
Black Myth Pokédemon
Chinese developers are cooking these last couple of years
@TruestoryYep But they look like Elden Ring in regards to fighting, color scheme, characters, etc. I wouldn't confuse them with Elden Ring bug it seems inspirational. Though that may just be b/c I haven't played any other Fromsoft game so maybe they just all inspire to look like that? 🤷♂️
Between this game, Phantom Blade Zero, Wu Kong, Wu Chang, and Lost Soul Aside, their gameplay looks quite similar. But only Lost Soul Aside who looks kinda standout because it didn't use Wuxia setting.
I mean, it's cool that Chinese devs are booming especially with character action-hack & slash genre. But i expect more diversity from them.
Too much of these style games as you guys all confirm. Nothing new. Graphics dont do good games. And if they are similar to each other booooring.
