If you've ever tried to get a refund for a PS Store purchase, you'll know that the process is quite painful.
Fortunately, Sony's finally done something about it, as the method by which you can ask for your money back has been made much simpler.
While logged into your PSN account on the PS app for smart devices or the PS Store website, you can now simply hit a button while viewing your past purchases to ask for a refund.
Here's the process via the website:
- Log into your PSN account
- Click your avatar, then Account Settings
- Click Transaction History
- Find an eligible purchase you wish to have refunded
- Click it, then click Request Refund
Subscribe to Push Square on YouTube166k
On the app, it's very similar; while logged in, tap the menu button and select Transaction History, choose a purchase, and hit Request Refund.
This is a much simpler route to asking PlayStation for your money back on PS Store purchases; it was previously a much messier procedure.
While this is good news, it should be noted that the PS Store refunds policy is no less strict on exactly what can be refunded.
In a nutshell, you can get a refund if:
- Your purchase was made within 14 days of the refund request
- You haven't downloaded or streamed the item
- If it has been downloaded or streamed, item is found to be faulty
The full policy lays things out in much more detail, but that's the gist.
Still, it's good that requesting a refund has been made easier, at least.

On Xbox you can ask for refund even if you played the game, if you didn't play it that much. Sony is still quite strict and unfair with their refund policy
The refund policy should be the same as steam, you can refund the game as long as you're not playing it more than 2 hours š
I never do refunds because then I lose the ability to complain about the item I just bought.
Nice timing for MGS Delta release š¤£
Iāve made use of the refund procedure a couple of times in the past. It was quick and painless to be honest. We do need an option to trade back after a couple of hrs play though, like on Steam.
Dreamland now, but we could also do with an option to get some credit back from Sony by āsellingā an old game back to them.
I bet there are loads of people who might need an extra Ā£10 for a Ā£70 newly released game and would give up the license for a couple of old games they donāt play, rather than wait for a sale where they might potentially get it much cheaper anyway.
@wiiware I've never agreed with the blanket rule of 2 hours. You can easily complete a game like A Short Hike in under 2 hours, and there are plenty like it. It doesn't sit well with me.
Of course, not getting a refund just for downloading a game is the other end of the extreme and isn't ok either.
A more consumer friendly refund policy is necessary to reduce the amount of false marketing, low-effort, low-quality "certified" games that manage to release on the PlayStation Store.
Currently, these are only eligible for refunds after download if they are discovered to be broken within short time with the game. This is why I try to play games within 14 days of purchase and seek refund if game is found to broken. Have only done this for 2-3 games out of 800+ games I have bought over the years.
Good to hear!
But.. How do you provide evidence a download game is faulty?
Error logs dont always happen, for example a game I recently bought kept freezing requiring manually closing the game from the home screen, but it didnt generate an error log. Its not always possible to screen record these things either.
@EK42 For the 2-3 times I have done this, I just described to the support person what is happening. They had me try a few things and when that didn't solve issue, promptly issued the refund which removed the game from my digital library.
They need to allow a little playtime because the game could be unplayable etc. I guess the way to prevent people finishing short games would be to potentially use the trophies? If there is a way for developers to set a particular trophy as a game completion trophy and you have it then you canāt refund. I think this only affects a small subset of games though for it to be even worth it.
I canāt remember playing anything Iāve bought for less than two hours even games Iāve ended up putting down.
@Czar_Khastik lol, this made my day! Because, you know, it is sooo true!
I don't like the download requirement.
A few years ago I accidentally bought an item in my wishlist while buying something else (user error somehow, still unsure how I did it) and the game automatically started downloading.
Thankfully I canceled the download and Sony processed the refund very easily for me - but with how things auto download, this policy seems too strict.
Iāve never had to do this and for that Iām eternally thankful!
Itās kind of insane that merely downloading the game disqualifies you from a refund. The whole purchase path streamlines installing the game.. the buy button turns into a Download button. That should not be grounds for disqualification if the game wasnāt even launched.
This policy stinks. It stunk before and it still stinks now.
@Medic_alert š¤£š Bravo,you win the internet today!
Yes, a simplified procedure is long overdue but without at least matching competing storefronts is hardly going to win over customers....will only be useful possibly for at launch bugfests ala Fallout 76 or Cyberpunk etc.
I requested one refund: Yooka-Laylee & the Impossible Lair. I bought it on the app, but when I told it to download to my PS5 it told me it was incompatible. I started with customer service on the app, then had to switch to a phone call. Then I was told it would be have to be resolved by a supervisor and was given a ticket number.
After a week I called back, angry that something so straightforward was such a problem, only to be told that the refund had been processed the same day I spoke to someone. They donāt bother sending an email when the issue is resolved.
All told, it took a little over an hourāand a week of aggravationāto get back the $5. The new system seems like it will shave off maybe 5 minutes at the beginning. The non-aggravating part, in other words.
Only ever refunded Cyberpunk on PS and it took forever so Iām glad itās streamlined now.
That being said Iāll probably never use this unless a game I buy gets added to Plus within the two week period and I somehow havenāt downloaded yet.
Got a refund for Oblivion Remastered a couple of weeks ago despite having bought it at release and played 14 hours. I thought I'd give it a go as someone on here said they had successfully done so and as a proper patch wasn't forthcoming I thought why not? And I was really surprised it was quite easily done. I said they'd sold a faulty product at launch and they processed my refund no bother. The AI chatbot and waiting time was as obstructive as they intend them to be but once I was communicating with an actual customer service agent it was fine. When I tried to get a refund for Outlaws previously it was impossible to actually get to speak to anyone as the queue length was ridiculous and then they were cutting people off.
Any progress is a good thing to make the process easier but it's still too difficult and their own rules are too prohibitive. It's something that is only going to become a bigger issue as long as they keep releasing actually broken/unfinished product on a seemingly regular basis. The fact it's digital rather than a physical copy is irrelevant. Whether it's incompetence or outright deceit, there's some shoddy practices that people would never accept with other entertainment product. Imagine purchasing a movie where certain scenes don't work or play at all or the quality of the picture degrades the further into the film you watch? Its ridiculous.
They need to sortout their licesence system before allowing refunds with played games. As it works at the moment, a person could just download the game, put the console offline and play the whole game.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare Yes, since it will be too late to return cod games if the download time is included in the refund period lol.
@Ainu20 For indie game that can be finished in 2 hours, just make the refund time 1 hours, and include the info in the game psn page.
Steams policy is far better have 2hrs and you can get a refund but if your having issues like crashing or anything you can get one even if your over the limit. If you keep any reports it generated every crash you can submit it I've had no issues getting a refund over the 2hrs

What people seem to forget is that PC hardware is all different and you might need a couple of hours to see if a game even runs on your PC. The same isnāt true of consoles, we know exactly how a game runs on consoles. Thatās the key difference, they arenāt the same.
Do we get a refund if we didnāt like a sports match or movie and left early? Personally I donāt think weāre entitled to a refund on a game simply because we donāt like it an hour or two in. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
But I do think Sony should be more open to refunds or exchanges if obvious mistakes are made e.g. bought the PS4 version not PS5. (Although in my limited experience they are, they refunded the only two I have asked for hassle free)
Iām generally apprehensive about government intervention and regulation when it comes to gaming but Iāve felt for a long time that there needs to be greater consumer protection across the board for digital services and products. As it currently stands Sony really only refunds if a game has massively ***** the bed and its making headlines about its abysmal state e.g. Cyberpunk and Concord but there are still plenty of games that have problems and fail to meet expectations and players are entitled to their money back. A policy that is more aligned with Steam would be ideal and solve the issue.
That "refund" requirements feels antic at this point.
Companies like Sony and Nintendo become increasingly anti-consumer and arrogant when their fans make them too successful. They are like corrupt politicians in Congress who keep getting re-elected no matter how they treat their constituents.
Easily the worst thing about buying games on Playstation is Sony's customer service and policies.
They always seem to be anti-consumer, you really have to fight them on everything and even then they will still likely act against you.
