EA and developer Full Circle have finally announced a release date for their reboot of the beloved Skate series.
The game, which is a free-to-play, social, open world skateboarding sim, is set to launch in early access on 16th September 2025 — and that includes PS5 and PS4.
There's no word on when the final, 1.0, the-game-is-officially-done-now launch will be, but we'd expect the early access phase to go on for a while.
Announced all the way back in 2020, Skate has been a long time coming. After widespread pleas from fans to bring the series back, EA finally buckled, and has been working on this revival for half a decade.

In the last couple of years or so, developer Full Circle has opened the game up to select playtesters outside the studio, gathering data and feedback from community members as the game took shape.
Now, the game will soon be available for everyone to play, albeit in early access form.
This means the game isn't finished, and will continue to evolve based on feedback from a much wider player base.
Skate is an always-online, free-to-play, live service game. It's set in the open world city of San Vansterdam, a place that'll evolve over time, much in the same way you'd see in something like Fortnite's battle royale map.
The game has a purposely loose structure; once you're through the tutorial, you can kind of go wherever you want and skate as you like.
You'll be placed into an instance of the open world with up to 149 other players, the idea being you can just skate together in a pretty free-flowing way.
There are lots of missions and challenges dotted around, and completing these will unlock further missions and cosmetic rewards.
You're also encouraged to use edit tools to create and share; certain spots on the map are there for you to create interesting lines using unlockable geometry and props. You also have access to a replay system, so you can capture your skating prowess from various angles.
It being a free game, there are of course a number of microtransactions and loot boxes to incentivise players to splash some cash.
However, from what we've seen so far, anything in the in-game store is purely cosmetic, and there's no need to spend any money unless you want a specific outfit or deck.
On top of that, you're able to earn plenty of cosmetics through regular play, so you shouldn't be short of options anyway.
Will you be giving Skate a shot when it arrives in early access next month? Manual into the comments section below.

I'll check it out because why not? Worst case I dont find it fun. Best case I find it fun. As long as microtransactions are purely cosmetic and reasonably priced and ofcourse optional then I'm fine with it. But if they lock tricks and map parts or ramps.and stuff behind a paywall then I'll be less enthused
@Simu001 It's going to be like Fortnite. They'll flog you virtual Vans and Dickies hoodies.
Looks great, ready for a new skate 👍
If this game isn't the most successful success that ever succeeded, EA is going to drop it long before it gets to a 1.0 release.
Please don’t be crap!
@get2sammyb If it stays at that I actually dont mind. Since its licensed stuff it and this way they can cycle through different licenses. As long as there is a good baseline variety. We'll see soon aneough amd early access if handled right is an great for feedback and getting data. I do hope they listen to the community.
I miss Skate a ton and since it's free to play there's no harm in giving it a shot.
But if I have to pay money for a Baker/Deathwish deck I'm gonna be a little salty lol
WTF have they done to skate? I loved skate 2 on my xbox 360. It had gritty visuals and felt quite hard-core.. this looks pretty meh to be honest. Not a fan of having every game being turned into a fortnite style cartoon fest..
@Northern_munkey A sign of when it began development I suspect. Anyway, I wanted skate 4, so this can do one.
@TripleKing333 a sign of trying to be down with gen 💤..
@get2sammyb If that’s all it is, I can successfully ignore the cosmetics. But then I worry that it won’t make any money and it’ll be shut down anyway.
Get ready.....to be ready....to get ready.
Lemme know when they finish it.
I'll try it. If it's pants, I've always got Skate 3 on my Xbox to fall back on. I hope that the music isn't just all modern rubbish.
Free to pay have to wait to see how much they charge.
Do we think this will go a bit like Multiversus? Release in early access, everyone will play it, it will generate loads of hype.
Then stop for 6 months. Release the ‘final’ version which will shortly die because half the people will have already tried it and not liked it, and the other half won’t be interested now the hype has gone.
Having played this for the past few months, i’d say people have nothing to worry about.
But I worry for the long term support if the money doesn’t hit from microtransactions.
EA being EA of course.
Such a strange title to release free to play.
@ApostateMage Music seems to be a mix of old and new, same as Skate 3 was for the time. I think we forget that these games’ soundtracks had modern stuff for the time, it was most apparent for me in the jump between Underground 2 and American Wasteland when I suddenly realised that the songs were from the actual time the games came out.
My favorite thing to do in this game so far has been to throw the board away, curl into a ball, and roll around. It's even better when you jump out of the roll and launch yourself back into another one, like the best hidden traversal mechanic I didn't know I wanted. You can basically be a Droideka in this game.
Honestly couldn't they just of made a true skate game and sold it.
It would of sold. The other gsmes in the series are brilliant and I feel as though the realistic approach to the old games was a bigger draw than people say it was.
I really enjoyed the story and progression.
But I guess I'll check it out aslong as the mechanics are similar but improved.
But I just dont see what exactly will get people to actually pay for just cosmetics and stick around.
Im not one for paying for free to play games and would much rather buy a true game.
Its always slightly off putting being free to play
I feel like both remasters of THPS games stole the thunder of these. Also it still being released in EA after 5 years is weird. I don't think it will be succesful.
