Fear Effect, the FMV-heavy PS1 horror action game from Eidos, has suddenly appeared on PS Store for both PS5 and PS4.
This was first spotted by Gematsu, also noting that the game has yet to be seen on Switch or Steam:
The port is from Limited Run Games, and was announced back in June of last year.
Due to the shadow drop-like nature of this release, and the fact other versions haven't done the same, it's speculated that the PS5 and PS4 launch might be a mistake.
Either way, the game is available for digital purchase right now on PS Store for $9.99/£8.99.
If it has launched early on PlayStation, it's possible the game will be removed soon and reinstated at the proper time. Alternatively, it could just be that the Switch and Steam versions are held up for some reason.

I just check PS Asia store and i can't find it. Either it's US only or they gonna release it later like months or even a year.
I would love to play it though since the PS1 copy is pretty expensives and a lot of them are in bad condition or missing the manual.

Kinda disappointed. I was hoping it would be a proper remaster.
Has this been enhanced in any form or just a dump of the the origional. I'd love to play this and the 2nd one but when I tried a year or so ago it was a bit ropey.
@Kidfunkadelic83 It's in wide-screen and there's an option to toggle between tank controls and more modern movement, but other than that it looks like it's identical to the original release.

I don’t know if I’m more disappointed that it’s just the PS1 version running on implicit conversions emulator, or that they needed to change how the save states and rewind function work to make it appear different from all the other PS1/2/psp classics running on the same emulator.

Was Fear Effect Reinvented cancelled? I liked the look of it and got excited that this was that.
Was this the game with the controversial lesbian kiss in it? Controversial not because of homophobia but because it was there solely for the male gaze?
Either way, never played it back in the day. Might give it a whorl.

Does it still have the loading delay when going from screen to screen, and when the background FMVs loop? Or have those been trimmed/streamlined?
It is up on Steam for 10€. The Steam store usually updates at 3 or 4 in the afternoon, central European time.
I actually wishlisted this on Steam about a month ago. Got the email it went up this morning. Good news as I loved this game. The sequel was much better, so I hope that gets released as well.
@LifeGirl Pretty sure that was part 2 where they added the character of Rain (it's been a few decades). It really pushed the M rating at the time as there was a sex scene between Hana and Rain, and quite a bit of gore as well.

I own the digital version on PS3/Vita, but that hasn't grandfathered my entitlement to this version. This is odd considering all the other PS1 ports that I owned on prior gen did.
For a tenner it's exactly what I'd expect
I loved Fear Effect back in the day and I was sad that it can never catch a break. The 3rd game Inferno was nearly done but got cancelled after Eidos pulled funding after Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness flopped.
Then a indie studio made FE Sedna but wasn't good, then the remake Reinvented got cancelled too.
@LifeGirl The characters often flirted but it was pretty tame really. It was the marketing that caused the controversy because it laid into the lesbian male gaze angle heavily to the point that it was almost misrepresenting the game.
underrated franchise! i know this series gets a lot of flack for its emphasis on the "edgy" lesbian relationship marketing, but it was a solid tank control action/adventure game with an amazing atmopshere and art direction. heck, i'd say this was one of the biggest budget games of its genre at the time. not sure how well it sold, but it certainly has a cult following.
Well I had planned to get this but after watching some footage on YouTube I thought it looked a little rough, almost as bad as my PS1 copy from memory, its been a while since ive had her set up. Booted up duck station on my galaxy S25 ultra put it in 6x upscale and omg what a difference. Surely something similar could have been offered my LRG here.
@JonTheGod This is completely different from the other PS1 releases. It has nothing to do with Sony.
$9.99 vs. $40+ is pretty convincing, but if there aren't any major improvements then I'm not sure. Probably still fine to boot up on my trusty PS3.
It might be something in 1999, but this did not age well.
