Sony is working closely with AMD on the PS6, and specifically on a technology currently codenamed Project Amethyst.
This is a true collaboration between the two companies which has already borne fruit: the FSR4 upscaling tech in the latest line of Radeon graphics cards was created in collaboration with PlayStation.
Next year, that same technology will be rolled out on the PS5 Pro, promising significant upgrades for everyone who purchased Sony’s supercharged system.
But the most remarkable thing here is that none of this progress is proprietary: according to PlayStation architect Mark Cerny this is all about pushing the industry forward.

He told Tom’s Guide:
“This is not for proprietary technology. This is really trying to move the industry forward. Obviously we want to use these technologies on our consoles, but these technologies are available to any of AMD’s customers freely.”
The specific technology that’s been touted as part of this boils down to AI-based upscaling, similar to PSSR in the PS5 Pro.
For those who don’t know, these tools are able to take a lower resolution image and reconstruct it in 4K with very little compromise.
This means, in essence, developers can spend more computational resources on frame rate and other visual bells-and-whistles, as rendering a native 4K image is very expensive.
As part of the collaboration, Sony and AMD are really pushing each other hard.
