For the past couple of years or so, ex-Capcom producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi has made a habit of mentioning his new project — and we may finally be on the cusp of actually seeing it.
Having left the company in 2022, Kobayashi had worked at Capcom for close to 30 years, overseeing the original Devil May Cry and Dragon's Dogma games as a producer. He was also a producer on Resident Evil 4, and the Sengoku Basara series.
Just to be clear, Kobayashi is not to be confused with Hideaki Itsuno, who left Capcom a couple of years after Kobayashi, in 2024. He was the director on Devil May Cry, Dragon's Dogma, and more.
Anyway, both of them have gone on to head their own development studios, and as the headline suggests, Kobayashi is working on an action RPG. His company, GPTRACK50, is a subsidiary of Chinese tech giant NetEase.
"While I can’t reveal any details yet, everything is going as planned," he said, in a new interview with Famitsu (as translated by Automaton).
"In our New-Year’s greeting card for 2025, I said I wanted to announce it by the end of the year, and as a man of my word, I want to keep that promise," Kobayashi teases.
"We’ve already entered the second half of the year, but rest assured that our studio is already preparing to make the announcement."
So, this is the announcement, but when can expect to be playing this thing (assuming it's targeting PlayStation platforms to begin with)?
Well, Kobayashi says that the team's currently in the process of recording voicework, which suggests that it's pretty far along.
What are you hoping from this supposed action RPG? Does Kobayashi's past experience fill you with confidence for it? Kickstart some speculation in the comments section below.

Please release difficulty modes not every game needs be a souls like or if it is release difficulty modes for other gamers I hate tough games gaming is supposed to be enjoying not frustrating for me anyway can't speak for anyone else
Just to clarify, he’s a producer, i.e. he had no role in the actual game design, story or art etc. He’s like a project manager. Not to diss his role or anything but producers tend not to be able to recreate high quality games when removed from specific creative teams they worked with.
Examples of Producers moving onto new work:
Leslie Benzies - GTA -> Mindseye
Jade Raymond - Assassin’s Creed -> Lots of things that didn’t work out
Glen Schofield - Dead Space -> Callisto Protocol
@Overmind everyone's opinions and preferences towards difficulty in games is different but me personally I'd like difficulty modes obviously I understand some games like elden ring won't ever have them maybe that's the appeal
@SeaDaVie And a few that did work out:
The moral of the story is.... If you are Japanese it can work /jk
(I know they aren't producers)
@SeaDaVie "Jade Raymond - Assassin’s Creed -> Lots of things that didn’t work out." I love that bit..just superb 👍
@themightyant they all have creative roles though, on top of producer roles, especially Kojima and Takahashi, who have Director credits across games. Igarashi is more of a producer but he also has creative credits in writing, scenario designer and Co-director(also directed a game Ive never heard of).
Kobayashi had 2 programming credits from 30 years ago and has only worked as a producer since. That doesn't fill me with confidence.
@Overmind spot on ye exactly and capcom have made some incredible games the last few years they are the masters at the minute
Everyone is bitchi🤫g about difficulty in games now when they was saying games are easy years ago.i enjoy hard games theyres always a way to beat them.word up son
@Dan12836666 Let them make what they want to make. Practically every game had difficulty settings and you're acting like they arent.
@playstation1995 🍻 yup… as the age-old saying goes git gud scrubs 😏🍿
@playstation1995 people complaining probably never played any games in the 80's and 90's. No saving, consoles literally frying due to overuse, games like Kid Chameleon, Strider, ... even the Lion King would kick your ass. And it was all good. Some games are meant to be hard, others are meant to be chill. Just pick yours and have fun.
Those leaving the best jp company by far in this moment was a mistake i hope im wrong and game ends being amazing but i have my doubts mainly because of netease
