Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is the first game in SEGA's grand plan to bring back various classic series from its back catalogue, and it looks like it's kicking things off on a firm footing.
We knew a Shinobi game was in the works, but it was formally announced earlier this year, developed by the team behind Streets of Rage 4.
As the game flips and kicks its way to its 29th August release date, SEGA has been putting out the odd trailer here and there, and the latest one really shows the game in the best possible light.
Focusing on the 2D action game's combat, it looks like excellent fun in the new video.
You'll be able to slice and dice enemies and bosses with a range of moves and abilities, like special Ninpo skills and powerful Ninjutsu attacks. Combining all the tech at your disposal, it looks like you should be able to juggle bad guys forever, if you're skilled enough.
Also, we love the game's visual style. It's similar in some ways to Streets of Rage 4's bold illustrated style, but it's an even cleaner look for Art of Vengeance.
We're excited to get our hands on this one, and it's not too far away now. What are your thoughts on Shinobi: Art of Vengeance? Leap into the comments section below.

Limited Run Games are releasing a "Classic Edition" which comes with a slick steelbook and Sega Genesis game case. I was on the fence here, but after seeing the trailer, I have to say that this game looks like a nice addition in a game collection.
@Czar_Khastik
I’ve just seen a proper retail version available on Amazon and it’s rather cheap at £34.99 for me as I live in the UK.
It’s also on the US Amazon as well according to where the physical was listed on.
I’ll definitely be getting this, they’ve done a great job of the new Shinobi.
I still haven’t gotten round to finishing the remake of Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Can’t wait to read the reviews for this one as I’m contemplating being Day 1 for Shinobi. What a great day for retro gaming fans the day this releases with MGS Delta releasing the same day.
@Czar_Khastik same - I needed to see it in action. Super mega expensive "genesis case" will be mine!
Stuck a pre-order in for this ages ago, looks class. Hope its not a "where the hell do i go next vania" (otherwise known as metroidvania)
@Dragoon1994 I was excited then when I saw your comment, looked on amazon and the switch version is code in a box. Blegh.
Oh well, LRG get another switch sale from me 🤣
I played the Shinobi games back in the day on my Megadrive; they were hard as hell 🥲 This looks incredible though! 😍
Yeah it looks sick. I'm waiting for physical release from non-LRG if there's any. But if not, i guess i'll go digital...
Streets of Rage 4 was an unbalanced mess for the first few months of its life, but a few patches later it turned into one of my favourite games of the last few years, and I sank 120 hours into it. So I'm cautiously optimistic about this.
@PuppetMaster
Amazon have them
@Balie3000
Yeah same
@Slideaway1983
Oh sorry to hear that, I didn’t look at the Switch version as I mainly game on my PS5.
I particularly don’t like LRG so I’m glad that the PS version is on disc as it doesn’t say otherwise
@somnambulance
There’s also Terminator 2D No Fate coming out in September which is done in the 16 bit style and looks incredible
@Dragoon1994 yep I agree it doesn't say otherwise, so fingers crossed for you.
I'll put in a preorder like I said for switch and if I spot an Asian import somewhere I'll nab that instead.
I've been burned enough by LRG now to know to always check VGP / PlayAsia etc to double check there's not another release elsewhere as you still pay 20% tax anyway for imports.
@Slideaway1983 @Dragoon1994
I understand why people dislike LRG and usually I avoid them and just buy retail versions of the games I like. But sometimes I tend to purchase their "middle ground" editions which include a steelbook so the price is somewhat bearable after taxes. Their collector's editions are too expensive and filled with stuff I don't need so I avoid those 200$+ goodie bags.
The way im more hyped for this than Death Stranding or Ghosts of Yotei lmao I'll be snapping up that physical edition
@Czar_Khastik
Living in the UK makes them ridiculous prices to have them posted on top of how much the edition costs.
Also when people put them up on eBay they are usually from US countries and costs an extra £20 at least for postage.
If there’s from them port wise I’d want I intend to just buy them digitally.
Rocket Knight adventures and JP classic collection are two games I still wanna get at some point, as well Tombi special edition and Gex trilogy
@Dragoon1994 Yeah, I'm living in EU so the same thing applies when I buy from LRG. The games they release are available digitally sooner and far cheaper so that is the best route to take. But as a collector I like to have physical versions of games I like (retro titles especially) so I buy some of LRG steelbook editions.
There is one positive side to buying physical LRG releases: if I ever intend to sell these, they usually go up in price over time where standard retail versions of those games become cheaper. I won't sell my collection unless it's absolutely necessary, but this is what I usually tell myself before paying the fool's taxes to LRG.
@Dragoon1994 in a way that's kind of a relief because it takes away the temptation — also I've seen games appear quite comfortably on Amazon UK that are ostensibly rare/out of print in the US, so picking up a standard edition is never that much of a headache.
@Czar_Khastik
Yeah that’s very true
@Andee
Yeah Shinobi is only £34.99 as well.
Normally Game have physical versions available as well but doesn’t to be the case for Shinobi
The gameplay and graphics looks really good, I want the dev to make golden axe remake next
N.i.c.e.Shinobi video games are always fun. I l❤️ve the Shinobu video games on the sega genesis. Word up son
@Dragoon1994 They Shinobetter than that.
@Dragoon1994 It does look fantastic. I love these new 2D retro style games. Feels like we had a flood of them for a while and then the last maybe 2, 3 years, they slowed down in favor of retro style RPGs and, man, am I glad they’re back. Ninja Gaiden Ragebound also looks like a solid return to the 2D classics as well. Can’t wait to have too many games to play after what has felt like a slow year for me. Lol
I'm waiting for Absolum, Terminator 2D: No Fate, Neon Inferno, Double Dragon Revive, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Golden Axe and Streets of Rage
@somnambulance
Yeah that’s true.
2D games don’t happen very often now.
There’s HD 2D remakes of Star Ocean the Second Story, DQ3 and Live a Live out with DQ 1&2 getting HD 2D remakes in a few months
Shinobi (on Master System) was the game that turned me from a "this is a novel fun thing" to "i'm a gamer now". I am beyond excited for this, it looks great. Fake-first-person Shuriken minigame in between levels please.
With Shinobi, Terminator 2D New Fate and Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, the next 12 months are going to be amazing for me! I love a good 2D action game.
Very excited about this. Think it may be one of the only games still to release this year that I've really got any anticipation for
This looks a lot like Strider, but that’s not a bad thing. I hope it’s good.
This looks absolutely sensational from top to bottom. The art style is gorgeous, the combat looks incredible, the level design seems solid, with fun but challenging platforming. I cannot wait for this. I’m very curious to see how Ragebound and this title compare to one another.
Looks great. Hope it's fun to play too because sometimes these shiny trailers dissapoint in the end.
@Jrs1 That's absolutely what it is, mo chara - it says as much on the official site and promo material.
I love Shinobi, but I'm so burnt out on Metroidvanias (Blasphemous, Monster Boy, Ender Flowery-Things, etc), so I'm personally not rushing out to get this. I'm sure it'll be great, either way, so don't go cancelling anything.
