Summer Game Fest is presented in such a way that most games tend to blend together, so we can’t say we paid much mind to survival game Ill.
The body horror outing, created by Team Clout and published by Mundfish, is getting a lot of attention online, though. It seems the game was announced a long time ago, and has been in some form of development hell for a while.
“ILL is a realistic first-person action horror game that takes you into a dark fort overtaken by a mysterious entity,” the blurb reads.

“Unpredictable monsters, a visceral dismemberment system, and realistic physics create an atmosphere of relentless terror.”
While it does look visually impressive, we can’t really say this one did much for us. Yes, it’s gory in a sort of slapstick way. Yes, you can kick babies in the face. Yes, the physics are borderline mind blowing. But it all just seems a bit too bland of a concept to really grab our attention.

This trailer screamed "too good to be true" for me. The animation, physics, and visuals look so smooth and good that I don't believe it.
This was one of the most interesting reveals to be sure. Certainly one of the few things where I instantly took note to keep an eye on it.
Would be a perfect VR game.
Best game of the entire show.
@naruball rather hybrid...
they just deleted "Silent H" from title. BTW it looks like good arcade shooter. Just add some colors and it will be perfect.
Yo what’s the article talking about that ***** looked amazing. Now I guarantee it won’t look that good and have those animations when it launches but I’m def keeping an eye on this. Mundfish publishing this and making Atomic Heart 2 has me pumped
Bland? I have no idea how anyone can watch that trailer and say it looked bland. You can say it looks too good to be true, which I absolutely agree with. But saying it's bland when everyone else is praising it seems like you're just trying to be a contrarian. Or maybe you just prefer generic 3rd person action adventure games.
Tasty delicious blood and guts
Bland? Not sure we were watching the same trailer.
It was giving Callisto Protocol with some moments
I think they need warnings when showing trailers for games like this. My son had to cover his eyes for half the show, but we didn’t know when the and trailers were going to be so it was a bit hit and miss as to what he saw. Hehe.
I’m not sure a game like this is healthy for anyone to play. But the animations and enemy designs are next level though.
It actually piqued my interest and I hate horror.
I dunno, looked like a tech demo or proof of concept to me
Looks great in a sick kind of way
Nothing more than cheap and nasty gore-porn.
It'll play a 6/10 (at best) game of first person shooting, and the story will have been written on the back of a napkin.
It's another fake game scenario. There was a rather unpleasant trailer released years ago that made out it was 'in game' yet so obviously wasn't. It's been dining off that intial reveal for too long and now barely gets any nearer towards being a cohesive game other than showing some more gore snippets.
I forgot about Ill as soon as the trailer ended, I’ll probably immediately forget about it again as soon as I swipe back.
Not sure why the term body horror is being used, it's just gore.
@Kienda the show did say at the beginning that it may contain stuff for mature audience and viewer discretion is advised
"Resident Evil: Days of the Last of Us, Gone", but the commercial sure looks good. As always: Gameplay or go home.
Btw: Is that a russian helicopter? Setting in eastern Europe?
It definitely looks too good to be true, but as for it being bland, I suppose if it was a gatcha game or full of sex appeal, then Sammy would be more interested. That appears to be the only thing that gets reported on by him these days.
@Mordath17 I get that.
But for any casual viewer, the gore and horror in games is not regular. It is extreme.
Horror movies do not show the level of gore in their trailers. Especially not during awards shows or things that are for general audiences. Yet in the gaming world it is on full display and unfiltered.
Every 18+ trailer should just have a little warning before each one so when a family like mine is watching, we can skip it or tell the kids to cover their eyes.
There are certain things like this in gaming that can be improved. Just because we like games doesn’t mean we all want 18+/R rated content at every event.
Any child watching this would be traumatised. And yet, they are showing the latest Lego and Sonic trailers for kids at the show whilst then showing gore that even movies don’t include.
It’s not normal. But we have normalised things in gaming that are, in my opinion, not healthy.
@Crimson_Ridley it did look too good to be true in 2021, back when it was originally presented on YouTube. Now it looks incredible yet attainable, with how the tech progressed since.
I think it’s the animations that make me question the game most. Everything was just too smooth for a game. It was still the highlight of the show for me though, but I also really enjoyed Scorn!
If this didn't grab your attention I can't tell you anything else. It was one of the most interesting and amazing trailers from the show. Hope it's at least is capable of half of what they showed.
I saw clips of this on YouTube many years ago so when my friend told me they were showing some game called Ill yesterday, I was shocked. Every time a new clip dropped, it always looked insane but pretty much everyone thought it wasn’t a real game. To see Mundfish is publishing, which means this is actually a real game is so weird after so many years.
Mundfish's slate of games were the best of the stream until RE9s announcement.
There were a few great games on display but damn did it have a lot of filler imo
I actually agree with you on this one, Pushsquare. This one didn’t do anything for me, just a bunch of gross out visuals published by Mundfish, who made Atomic Heart, which was one of the buggiest games I’ve ever played. I get where people could like this, but it’s not for me at all. This looks like a Twitch game where streamers will make all kinds of reaction compilation videos…
I'm not one for horror games but the gunplay here interests me.
As a huge survival horror fan this appears a bit generic. Like a cross between Outlast and the first person RE games. Hell, even the font for the title resembles RE Village. Hopefully it'll prove me wrong but will wait for reviews before a punt...
Read the site for years. Love it. But I've long suspected there aren't really any horror fans among the PushSquare staff. And that's a shame.
This game looks disgusting, and I approve. For real body horror though, play Scorn.
ILL has been in development for a while. Hopefully it doesnt turn into a Situation like bluebox's Abandoned....
Wonder how the final product will truly turn out🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
If this game releases like this, Im gonna blast kneecaps like a madman.
@Kienda it gave you a warning at the beginning and was aired at 10pm at night (in the uk at least). They pretty much ticked all the boxes they need to. Its kinda on you if you let young kids watch it.
I tend to watch it live and then rewatch the next day with my kid so I can skip anything unsuitable.
ILL was the most memorable game at Summer Game Fest. We have don’t have many games like this in our soy and boring times. The games like Silent Hill f and ILL are like a breath of fresh air for me.
As long as they do something more interesting than Left 4 Dead or Days Gone with the concept, I'm interested!
@Weebleman I don’t let my kids watch it. We watch late, skip bad stuff etc.
Anyways, you’re missing the point. Even as adults, this stuff is extreme. Far more extreme than most people can handle.
I still think they could tone it down a bit for the trailers. Because you have kid friendly stuff next to real graphic stuff.
It’s one of the quirks of gaming. The gaming community shuns nudity. But has no problem with extreme gore. Why not be balanced about both?
That’s all I’m trying to say. And I still think warnings before each trailer would be helpful as someone who watches with family. Or maybe they could do a PG edit for us to watch after.
It doesn’t matter what boxes they tick. There is always way to do things better to suit all audiences.
@Kienda again, they literally said at the beginning this presentation contains strong language and violence. If you watch beyond there then thats on you.
You said you had to cover your kids eyes. If you were watching it after you had watched it live, surely you knew what was coming. Again, thats on you.
Im not gonna tell you how to parent or what you should and shouldn't watch as an adult, but when something tells me its gonna have violence in it, im not shocked when it turns up.
Im not trying to have a go or anything, im just baffled how anyone can complain about violence and gore in something that warns you it contains violence and gore.
It's worth mentioning that the press release states:
"The developers of ILL are seasoned horror experts whose contributions can be seen in acclaimed films and series such as V/H/S/Beyond, Longlegs, IT: Welcome to Derry, Azrael, and various Sony Pictures horror projects. In ILL, they apply their film industry experience to create an immersive survival horror with a cinematic edge.”
@Weebleman I still don’t think you get what I’m saying.
I’m not complaining that gore is shown. I’ve been watching these shows for years. It’s a part of it, I get it.
All I’m saying is. It would be great for families to have options. And as a family that watches, just every trailer having a warning.
We watched on a 10 minute delay. I skipped ILL and a few others, but if it was a short trailer they just covered their eyes. My wife included. This even included simple horror like Code Vein 2.
I accept that the warnings covered the bases. Nothing illegal happened. I’m just saying it’s a shame that EVERY game presentation, whether it is Sony, Microsoft or whatever ALWAYS has high levels of gore and horror in their shows.
If you don’t have kids, it’s not a bother. But as a family of gamers, who is excited to see the new games, it’s just something we have to juggle and it could be made easier.
I like how reactive the shooting looks, and have been wanting something more of that in games for years. If I shoot at the legs, I want the whatever to stumble; shoot at an arm, for the arm to come off, etc. Dead Space capitalised on that system, but it's rarely incorporated anywhere else. So, this has my attention!
Continue proof that PS5 has not even been close to being maxed out.
We're finally beginning to see true next generation games!
This game's looks sick asf!
@RBMango Why does it? No one said GTA looked too good to be true and that was on a PS5.
Devs have not even tried to max out a PS5 this generation.
Demons Souls is still probably the best looking game of this generation and it was a launch title.
@johncalmc I agree! It looks exceptionally promising.
This looks really interesting, the interaction between enemy and environment is super cool, it's really cool when enemy interact with physical object (or other enemy) in the games, if this is gameplay and not just CG, they have a hit on their hand.
And I 100% disagree that the game is "a bit too bland of a concept to really grab our attention", this is the exact opposite for me, lol.
Looks pretty generic or boring. Too much style and look were a horror game then anything remotely engaging for gameplay or it's style.
The atmosphere looked boring. I don't see the appeal. Animations sure, but atmosphere, looked generic.
But there was also way too many horror games too and many blend together.
I only got into certain zombie games or horror games for their mechanics, none of the horror games here were worth my time. Even Slitterhead had an ok idea but was mechanically limited with the possessing, which is not a good thing when moving around or what you can possess, so it's core and combat didn't do it for me, and I assume the same in the full game, which disappointed me. Still looked more interesting then most.
