Publisher NetEase Games has announced Blood Message, its first AAA single-player action adventure game, and it looks fantastic.
It's being developed by 24 Entertainment, previously known for online multiplayer title Naraka: Bladepoint. While it's a different kind of game altogether for the studio, the reveal trailer shows huge promise.
The Unreal Engine 5 game is set in ancient China during the final years of the Tang Dynasty. You play as a "nameless messenger and his young son" as they journey east across Asia "to deliver a message that holds the fate of their war-torn homeland".
It looks like it's heavily inspired by western blockbusters, with Uncharted a clear touchstone. Blood Message looks like the sort of cinematic action adventure fare we've come to expect from Sony's first-party teams, with big set-piece moments, a narrative and character focus, and top-drawer visuals.
"We are ushering players a new generation of high adventure with Blood Message," says Zhipeng Hu, Lead Producer and NetEase Executive Vice President in a press release. "As our first completely single-player focused experience from NetEase Games, after two decades of deep dedication to the gaming industry, we are prepared to deliver a truly epic and cinematic experience for players around the world."
There's no release date attached to this game as yet, but it'll certainly be one to watch out for in the coming months.

Will definitely be keeping an eye on this one. Been looking for something to scratch that uncharted type itch so hopefully this one will stick the landing.
Finally a new game that isn't soulslike, this looks great.

That looks like it could be a masterpiece. Definitely something I will play if the finished product is as good as the trailer...

@Zeldorf Did you just suggest a game made by the Chinese Communist Party won't have political influence? And don't kid yourself. Tencent, NetEase, etc are all CCP assets.
@Zeldorf Oh dear, go away you one dimensional culture warrior troll.
Looks almost exactly like what I want.
I've been craving a swords and sorcery or swords and sandals type game from Naughty Dog, or at least in their action adventure style, for years. Nice to see a few starting to appear.
Between this, Echoes of the End and Phantom Blade Zero, maybe we're at the end of the SoulsClones era? I love me some Souls, but I tend to limit myself to the FromSoftware releases so I don't burnout on the genre.
@Zeldorf gotta love internet assumptions. Currently playing and loving Veilguard.
This gen it loaded with phenomenal single player games. But for some reason they’re not important unless Sony first party studios are releasing them. Also, who wants to have fun playing awesome solo joints when you can just complain about failed live services you’ve never played to begin with? Sorry, haven’t had my coffee yet this morning. 😊
Looks too good, but then so did Black Myth: Wukong when that was announced. These Chinese developers know how to work magic.
@naruball on my 2nd playthrough. Great game! Most detractors have never even played it!
Last comment (hopefully).
I’m loving the influx of Asian characters in games!
This is where the gaming industry needs to be getting back to. Yes the odd live service game makes gazillions… but if you manage to make a stellar single player game, the chances of it making a healthy profit are far more in your favour.
Thank goodness for China and Korea.
@graymamba I absolutely love single player games, too, but let's be real: the live service hits make multiples more in profit than even the biggest single player game. That's just reality.
EDIT: Probably should be noted that the success of Naraka: Bladepoint is probably helping to fund this, much like with NIKKE and Stellar Blade.
@AhmadSumadi my current playthrough is as a mage and I'm wondering if melee combat is more fun. What's been your experience so far?
Blood message really does look phenomenal. As an action/RPG fun, what a time to be alive!
What is Chinese for “oh crap” ?
@Frmknst I''m sorry, but what does what you said have to do with this article? Is it because they said it's Uncharted meets ancient China?
@get2sammyb never said that they didn’t. Obviously if you get extremely lucky you could make a Fortnite or a Warzone (the profits of which dwarf any and all single player games) but the chances of that happening are likely 100-1.
So, I stand by what I said, the chances of you making a healthy profit (notice I didn’t say the same or more profit than the odd successful GaaS) with a quality single player game has far better odds.
@get2sammyb your right about live service Sammy even though I hate them games but why aren't Microsoft or Nintendo going down that route?
@Dan12836666 Nintendo do have the Splatoon and Super Smash Bros. games.
Asian devs are saving gaming right now!
Definitely keeping an eye on this.
@Bentleyma I know there's live service parts in there games I mean sony are fully tried chase the live service dream or nightmare lol
@Dan12836666 Microsoft has had live-service games for a decade or more: Forza Horizon, Sea of Thieves, and Halo Infinite for starters are all Games as a Service.
@naruball I’ll be honest. I’m a basic b——. I only play dual wield in RPGs. Anytime it’s an option is always my choice. I find magic/ranged to be rather boring. I started my 2nd playthrough as sword & board and had to restart as dual wield.

@LiamCroft ye i forgot about sea of thieves ye I love forza and halo because they have single player modes just can't understand why companies want to make just live service games and will risk financial ruin for it?
The graphics and setting looks really good. But for me it's quite weird to see a Chinese game in classic setting but without the Wuxia superhuman combat where everyone are fast af and can fly or jump super high 😆
This game looks brilliant asain developers are great at the minute wu kong stellar blade 👌
This LOOKS great, hopefully it also plays well.
Though while it looked spectacular it also felt quite derivative in some strange way, I kept expecting Nathan Drake to pop up, so many scenes were so similar. Definitely one to keep an eye on though.
@AhmadSumadi I have to say, I played it (Veilguard), and I'm a detractor. I found the characters unlikeable, the art style off-putting, and the moment to moment action pretty unexciting/ a bit janky. I don't think it succeeds as an action rpg, because it all feels way too shallow, and doesn't really feel like a good rpg either, because of the focus on action. Just my opinion! 😉
Looks incredible. I wish Sony would develop a new Uncharted or a new IP like that.
@AhmadSumadi I thought it was great , sure it has some extremely cringey forced dialogue, that has no reason to be in a game about dragons and wizards , but the meat of the game was solid , most characters where great , the ending was epic , shame it won't get a sequel.
Wow - I am impressed! This looks fantastic. It’s been a long while since we had a game that has the Uncharted spirit, but this game seems to be channeling it quite wonderfully. Hopefully, the set pieces don’t become repetitive; the trailer did have several repeated instances of falling/sliding down something. Regardless, I’m sold and will be keeping a keen eye on this one.
Dude… eastern developers are going to give gamers what they want and I’m here for it. Day 1 for me no question. I wish I could wishlist it on steam but doesn’t look like it’s on there yet

@Dan12836666 ms has fallout 76, wow, overwatch, minecraft, sea of thieves, cod warzone and tried red fall, bleeding edge. But I guess non of these are live service because of reasons. Nintendo has smash brothers and mario kart also falls presumably also in this domain.
No joke, this looks fantastic! I will definitely be keeping a close eye! Not really sure why everyone in the comments is trying to make this a culture war touchstone though....
@gaston ye I suppose so thinking about them games especially overwatch and sea of thieves they are fully live service which is ok but mainly Microsoft and Nintendo are releasing single player games seems to me sony want go all put live service which isn't good for gamers at all
Looks more technically impressive than the technical demo for Witcher 4.
Looks to me like Eastern developers are stepping up to fill the epic-and-technically-impressive-single-player-game void where Western developers are not sure whether to chase the live-service bag or taking years to release their games. I'm generalizing of course but I feel like I've seen many more impressive-looking Eastern single-player games than Western ones over the past couple of years.
@LiamCroft overwatch, diablo, world of warcraft and grounded
@J2theEzzo that’s fine, man. I gave it a 7/10 myself. Good but not great. But I see many comments like “Even when they gave it away I didn’t play it!” Then they go on to say how bad it is. How do you know if you’ve not played it? How about you try it since it’s free? Then make a valid critique. Right?
@lazarus11 and see. Those are valid criticisms. The same ones I had. My most hated thing about it is the fact that you can romance any character. That leaves them all feeling shallow and robotic. Inquisition had straight, gay, bi, etc. Even had a character who wouldn’t romance anyone because she thought she was too good for anybody lol. But yeah, overall, a good game.
@AhmadSumadi 😂 Totally fair criticism to make, yep. I absolutely felt compelled to try it with ps plus, but I'd just picked up Stellar Blade, and that had me surprisingly gripped, when I expected to fall off it, so I was comparing the combat of the 2 a lot.
Another shining example of PS owners getting the short end of the stick this generation.
This further proves we have not really seen true next generation gaming.
This looks really good.
Eastern developers are carrying the torch of great games meanwhile the west sometimes are a hit or a big miss im impressed with this mainly because is not a soulslike or gatcha
@Propaperpusher What do you mean? Why are we getting the short end of the stick?
Looks awesome! Glad someone is making the next great ND(like) game, whilst Druckmann pisses the company's reputation into the wind.
@lazarus11 Yes thank you Jesus! But we don't really know yet. Souls like games are getting so exhausted.
I just want to save my game and the enemies don't ***** respawn.
@get2sammyb Were getting the short end of the stick because it's been 5 years into this generation and we're finally seeing true next generation games coming out at the end of this year and beginning next year.
The focus on live service games has hurt the PS fan base because it took away precious resources from making some truly great gaming experiences. Heck they could have made AstroBot VR 2!
I want to play games that I cannot play on my PS4 Pro. I feel this generation has been so disappointing.
I was playing the recent Doom and there's nothing special about it. There's no next generation tech being displayed.
I keep thinking the most recent Doom is a $49.00 game disguised as a $69 title.
I just missed being wowed! The only game that consistently wows me is Demons Souls, graphics and sound design is top notch.
End of my mindless ramble !!
@wildcat_kickz Yeah i'm so tired of this "East vs West devs" culture war nonsense and over the top "Eastern devs are sooooo much better than Western devs" glazing and i'm an Asian btw.
If the game is bad then it's bad. It doesn't matter what country / regions the devs coming from. I rather played AC Shadow or Call of Duty from Western devs over crap like Left Alive or Balan Wonderworld from Eastern devs.
And the ironic thing from this "East vs West" culture war is many good games from Eastern devs didn't sold well. Like Capcom solid and refreshing Kunitsu Gami only sold around 500K which is really sad. Where's exactly these people who keeps praising Eastern devs and mocking Western devs? Did they even buy games or just talk but no walk? Ha! 🙄
Anyway. I'm surprise a multiplayer studio who made Naraka can developed an action-adventure game with this scale. I'm curious with their improvement progress like from Naraka to this type of game is a big jump.
@Dan12836666 MS hardly released anything in the first 3 years of this gen, PS is now behind. But this narrative that there is nothing coming from PS is so strange.
They released MLB the show, they released astrobot + dlc, bungie released the final shape, which I think was very well received (and wasn't there another one after that?), soon ghost of Yotei. Then there are second or third party games funded entirely or partially by PS. Sure stupid things happened, naughty dog's multiplayer was not thought though properly and then was cancelled very late, many studios pitched ideas which did not work out (london studio, pixel opus, bend, bluepoint) , and sony bought studios for live service games which also did not deliver. Sure, this is quite a disaster, but sony released games continuously. MS only seems to be in a good position outputwise because they bought publishers for 80 billions and then ported a lot of their more or less successful games over to playstation.. But did those studio deliver content reflecting their number and size ? Also the old catalogue of xbox games that still can be ported will dry out at some point and then this current dominance of xbox games in playstation release calendar will likely shrink.
Anyway I think somebody came up with this narrative that playstation studios stopped making single player games and everybody is just repeating this wrong statement.
I don't know how this wasn't announced at one of the summer showcases. If it really plays this well, it looks better than anything that was shown at the showcases.
Wow, visually at least that is certainly something. If it plays half as good as it looks we should be in for a treat!
@PuppetMaster Exactly! Let the games speak for themselves.
You had me at Uncharted!
Wow that does looks amazing it's almost like a bloody uncharted dynasty warrior game.word up son
This is the uncharted 5 naughty dog should be making instead of whatever they're doing right now, I feel kind of sad for AAA western devs after watching all the exciting single player games that the china and korea are making.
@wiiware You shouldn't feel sad for western devs when they're also making plenty of exciting games. From Ghost of Yotei, Chronos: The New Dawn, Hell is Us, Saros, 007 First Light, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Judas, Mortal Shell 2, Wolverine etc.
I'm just glad i don't care about western vs eastern devs nonsense and play whatever good games they make.
@AhmadSumadi hahaha. Dual wield it is then! Thanks! I'll give it a try.
Refreshing to see a medieval Chinese game not filled with supernatural demons. I'll wait for actually gameplay, but looks really interesting. I'm all about single player.
Not souls like, not battling demons and monsters, not live service, we could be on to a winner
@PuppetMaster Forgot to write AAA games, western indie games absolutely smashing it right now, can't wait for ninja gaiden ragebound, the new shinobi, and that marvel 2D beat em up, it's just that my hype already gone for the AAA stuff they usually make.
Absolutely not hyped for yotei and wolverine because I already now what type of writing and story I'm getting with those two games 😞
@wiiware SP and Insomniac has solid track record with their games. But you already believes that Yotei and Wolverine will have bad story & writing.
Meanwhile this game still lack a lot of info especially the story and gameplay. But you are hype and fully trust the studio gonna give you the best experiences better than Yotei and Wolverine?
You're not making any sense here brother. But hey you do you.
Why no mention of the release date window?
Looks like something Ubisoft would chuck out, easy pass 😂

@wiiware I love Spidey 2 story. What's wrong with it? The bond between Peter and Harry was strong, believable and thus the overall story is emotional.
Nothing special about this game, except being an inspired Uncharted game. I was hoping its combat is Wuxia inspired but no, it fought like assassin creed.
I'll definitely keep an eye on this cause I have a feeling it could be really fun
This comment thread just shows how many people haven’t a scooby doo what they are talking about
Looks good. I don't care who makes the games as long as they're good. That's the way it used to be when no one worried about everything. Play it or don't. People need to just find something they enjoy instead of wasting time complaining about something they don't.
I’m excited to see more eastern developers with a classic ethos. I only hope to see more with each passing year. This is a good thing. Competition is good and I hope western developers can ungeld themselves.
@get2sammyb They're the new Japanese studios of old!
@get2sammyb hear, hear! I just noticed that all the games I've played and enjoyed this year are from China and Korea
