Sega’s Virtua Fighter series is set for a comeback with its new project now officially in development. While it does seem like an absolute guarantee it’s happening at this point, the head of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio Masayoshi Yokoyama has made it clear the team will stop work if it’s not up to scratch.

In a chat with Famitsu (translated by EventHubs), Yokoyama acknowledged how this particular IP was “carved into Sega’s history” and there was absolutely no intention of delivering this new project “half-heartedly”. If it’s not up to the standard required, he’s apparently willing to make some tough decisions.

"If it starts feeling like it won't be good enough, we're just going to stop the project midway through. That's how serious we are about it."

The game’s producer Riichirou Yamada also chimed in – doubling down on these comments: “If Yokoyama decides that it’s stopping, it really does stop just like that,” he said.

Overall, the team aspires to make “something that hasn’t been made before”, and it’s not just about creating “games from games”. In general, the studio head wants the new entry to be innovative as well as a "cool" and "fun" experience for a wide variety of people.

While it's still not clear just how "serious" these claims really are, it's nice to see the studio wants to go above and beyond when it comes to delivering the next entry in this legendary 3D fighting series.

Of course, we’ve first got Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. to look forward to on the PlayStation 5, although there’s no word on when exactly this updated experience (or the new project) will arrive just yet.

What are you hoping to see from the new Virtua Fighter project? Will you be checking out Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. when it's released on PS5? Let us know in the comments.
