Sonic Wings, perhaps better known as Aero Fighters, is a legendary shmup which some of you may have played on the Super Nintendo.
It made its PlayStation debut courtesy of Sonic Wings Special, a kind of mash-up title which combined all of the content from the franchise’s first three games, and squeezed them onto Sony’s console. (And SEGA Saturn, to be fair.)
Now, decades after the last release in the series, a new game is in development, Sonic Wings Reunion – and it’s coming to the PS5 and PS4.

Due out on 7th October, development is being led by Shinya Nagatomo, with original character artist Fumihiko Nantoka and sound designer Soshi Hosoi both involved.
The full game will feature eight playable characters across eight stages, with local co-operative play, a training mode, and a customisable soundtrack featuring music from all past instalments.
Even better, there’ll be a physical edition available to pre-order, with details due to be announced on 27th May.
The Japanese version will actually release later this month, so if you’re desperate to get your hands on this, you could technically download it from the PS Store and play it right now. But obviously the Western release will have much wider language support, including English and more.

Dang Sonic Wings...feels like eons ago when i got my hands on this classic.
I wonder if my local store have the pre-order though. Would love to add this one for my collection.
What a blast from the past! Had no idea this was happening at all, but some nice news to wake up to, fond memories of this, but then most of my childhood was a 95 percent diet of shmups...
You'd think I'd be good at them by now too but hey ho 😅
@PuppetMaster May only be available through Red Art’s website.
Dang, always get all excited when I see anime art like this, just to be let down that it's another shmup rather than something with a story. Not that they're bad... but it's just a shmup.
@get2sammyb I see. I guess i'll wait for more info, maybe Playasia will have the english version.
@tameshiyaku Story never been the focus or main selling for shmups. You play shmups for pure gameplay from start to finish. There's no story exposition or long dialogues that bogged down players time.
Can never have enough shmups 😉👍
I liked how this series was pretty goofy at that. I actually ran into the 3rd game pretty often in the arcades back in the day.
@PuppetMaster I know, and they're fun. When I see the art however I imagine a RPG or something.
Got excited thinking this was a Sonic the Hedgehog game...
