PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny – the man behind the cutting-edge PS5 and PS4 hardware designs – will be deep into the development of the PS6 by now, but he’s still chipping away at his favourite games.
Renowned for unlocking impossible Platinums, the industry veteran pulled the ultra-rare Balatro gong over the weekend, joining the 0.1% of players who’ve actually unlocked it.
“After seven months and hundreds of hours, proud to join the 0.1% of players that have achieved Platinum on Balatro,” he said.
“Kudos to [developer] LocalThunk for the incredibly deep gameplay!”
The Platinum in Balatro is estimated to take anywhere from 150 to 250 hours to unlock, requiring you to use every Joker in the game to beat a deck on the hardest difficulty.
For the vast, vast majority of players – even those who thoroughly enjoy the game – this will likely prove too daunting of a task. But not for the unbelievably industrious Cerny – he really is a god among men.

I reckon that Cerny fella is a bit of a boffin.
And that is how you leave a Mark in Balatro.
Will Elon accept the challenge? As a team player, with some support…
Of course he is.
The Balatro platinum is far from impossible, it's mostly a very tedious grind.
I got it in around 190 hours I believe, at the cost of killing all future enjoyment from the game.
How? I'm not even able to achieve that one hand 100,000,000 points trophy.
I love this damn game but there's no way I'm doing the Platinum grind for it. Tip of the hat to Cerny, though, what a legend.
@dBacklash Same. I platinumed this game in 215 hours and pretty much hate this game now, as a result.
@Quintumply is it really that hard 🤔
to me, spend 2 day completed the game just enough
@Drago201 It's more a time issue than a difficulty issue, really.
Geezer! But I bet he don’t have Snowrunner platinum, twice 😁👊
@Quintumply gotcha time consuming is not good especially with backlogs 😅
Whilst it's not up there with the legendary hard platinums, it's still an impressive achievement. It's more grindy than anythplatinum, as it requires a lot of favourable rng.
Got it with ps+ and am currently working my way through all the decks to gold stakes, you do start to see the limitations and design flaws in the game fairly early into the grind. The structure is very rigid, establish economy then get a source of chips, +mult, xmult with little room for anything crazy or different if you want to win on high stakes.
I made it a good chunk of the way towards the platinum in this game and had to give it up, it became super tedious. I love the game but I don’t love it THAT much, apparently.
Hes probably training PS6 AI functions using the game, and this was its latest test/goal.
(I jest - well done to him)
@Zazu welcome to the party pal ! 😁
I thought Slay the Spire was impressive. Mark Cerney's 300 power hours to get this platinum- wow! Very impressive.
I've been working on this platinum for months. I'm absolutely nowhere with it.
