Prepare yourself for Helldivers 2 to explode in popularity all over again, as a major update bringing the battle to the streets of Super Earth has deployed today.
“Despite the valiant efforts of our Helldivers to push back the fleet, the Illuminate have reached Super Earth,” community manager Katherine Baskin declared on the PS Blog.
“Now they are swarming our cities, terrorising citizens, and destroying our infrastructure. It’s time to rise up and take arms and fight for the precious foundations and soil of Democracy manifest. Helldivers, return to our planet and defend what is rightfully ours.”
This is a major milestone moment in the live service “story” of Arrowhead’s enormously popular outing, as you’ll be battling it out between skyscrapers and a crowded urban jungle. Honestly, the gameplay trailer reminds us of Earth Defense Force in a good way.
“The Helldivers are tasked with a new objective: to repel the Illuminate invasion by gaining ground over the squids as they fight to control areas where the fleet is landing,” Baskin added.
“It won’t be a walk in the park, divers. Like a game of intergalactic tug-of-war, you will struggle against the incoming forces, gaining and losing control quickly.”
You’ll be able to activate Planetary Defense Cannons and call-in backup in order to overcome the impossible odds – but remember, civilians are here to be saved and must not be collateral damage. You’ll be punished if you fail to put the well-being of your fellow people first.
