No one does open worlds quite like Rockstar.
If you go back and boot up GTA 5 right now, you’ll find its sandbox is denser and more dynamic than practically everything that’s followed since. And let’s not even get started on Red Dead Redemption 2, which is an extraordinary technical accomplishment.
But it looks like GTA 6 will take everything the legendary developer’s learned over the past few decades and pump it up.
For those of you who haven’t been following, the new game takes place in the fictional state of Leonida, a location loosely based on Florida. That means it mixes bright, beautiful beaches with amusement parks, bustling sea ports, and huge open expanses.
The main attraction of the game will of course be Vice City, the metropolis inspired by Miami. You’ll find beaches, basketball courts, big wheels, and pastel art graffiti. This is where we suspect the bulk of GTA 6’s quests will take place.
But there’s much more to the open world than just Vice City, as you’ll also be able to explore the tropical seaport of Leonida Keys. This looks a lot more rugged and laidback than the main city, with rustic bars and boat parties.
One interesting thing that Rockstar’s been teasing is all of the wildlife systems it debuted in Red Dead Redemption 2. It looks like you’ll be able to go scuba diving in the Leonida Keys, and you’ll probably find alligators in the rough-and-ready wetlands of the Grassrivers.
Then there’s Port Gellhorn: a shadier side of Leonida laced with motels, liquor, and strip clubs. Removed from the sanctuary of the Vice City, it’s here you’ll find some of GTA 6’s seedier individuals.
It’s a similar story at Ambrosia, where industry rules supreme. This is the blue-collar section of the game’s sandbox, with biker gangs and power plants. But how many of the seemingly legitimate factories in the area are just fronts for unscrupulous activities?
And finally, we have the Mount Kalaga, a literal breath of fresh air compared to the overpopulated downtown environments. It’s here you’ll find the local wildlife, fishing spots, and even rivers ripe for kayaking or other watersports. The game’s official website mentions you may also encounter some paranoid religious radicals, living far away from the “prying eyes of the government”.
So, there’s an absolutely insane amount of variety to this open world, from dense city backdrops to sprawling national parks. Already our mind is wandering to all the amazing things you may be able to do in this open world, from playing street hoops in the city to swimming with sea turtles, this sandbox seems ripe for unforgettable exploration.
Where are you most excited to explore in Leonida? Send us a postcard in the comments section below.

I have to say that nowhere in the real Florida will you find anything resembling Mount Kalaga, as the state is extremely flat. But everything else looks on point and the game looks absolutely incredible.
That looks almost unreal. If they pull it off ... they can charge premium and they will be right to do so.
@pyrrhic_victory as a 36-year Florida resident I’ve yet to see a single mountain here lol. We have bridges all over the place though.
All I’m hoping for is a return to GTAIV physics. It was sublime for an open world game. But I won’t hold my breath after they went back to the arcade physics in GTAV. I guess most people don’t care about that though
@pyrrhic_victory did you miss the part where they said it’s a fictional city based off of Florida? It’s not gonna to be a 1:1 recreation. None of Rockstars games has ever 100 percent copied entire masses.
Love when ppl don’t read that’s it’s a fictional state based off of Florida. We know there’s no mountains in Florida. You can stop repeating yourself.
Yeah it's not literally Florida, it's just inspired by. Obviously they're still making a video game, and I guess they wanted some variety to the topography, which makes total sense.
I'm already having nightmares about how much storage this bad boy is gonna require.
I'm considering getting a 2nd PS5 to use exclusively for this game
Wonder how much focus the sea and underwater stuff will get giving its a big part of Florida.
AAAA???
Probably be minium standard version for $100!! Looks great can't wait be they will command a premium..nondoubt
I’m reckoning on £70 they don’t need to sell this game for £100 as it’s going to sell at least 150 million copies probs double that. And Sony will make a fortune off the tens of millions of consoles they will sell off the back of it too. I’d even expect a boost for the bedraggled Xbox consoles too
There's no way its actually gonna look like this on a PS5, right?
If we're being generous, the PS5 is similar in power to the older GTX 2080 graphic card, and the visuals in these images look like they would struggle getting a steady 60fps on the new GTX 5090.
@PlatinumMikey just one of the many reasons why gta4 will always be my favourite

In all honesty, what part of any of these areas did we not have in GTA 5. Like, are they genuinely going to be anymore dense and interactive then before? Surely would have been better to base this somewhere like London and therefore naturally have had vastly different areas to discover?
@Cry_Zero same mate. I’m hoping for a remaster some day. It’s in my top 3 games of all time
@Perturbator People said the same for RDR2 and the final game looked better then the trailers.
I do wonder if the streets will actually be this dense and action packed with people, or there will be that many animals all together, or if these are just placed Bull-shots that don't represent the final game. We've seen plenty of that before from R*
@Perturbator They said it's captured on a PS5 (not even a Pro) however (see my comment above) this is likely all in-engine and not entirely representative of the final game. But I do expect this to be the best looking open world game by a distance. We have reached the point where developers are less constrained by hardware, and more constrained by time and budget. They have their own custom engine, thousands of devs and a lot of years. I'd expect it to look similar to this, just less dense.

They can charge $100 and this game will break ALL the records
@themightyant We'll see. I'd love some comparison images when it comes out to see how it holds up.
And I'm talking about gameplay of course, not cutscenes.
@Faraz27 I realize it's not a 1:1 recreation, I've played every modern GTA game. I was just noting how the rest of the trailer looks very much like Florida except for that one area. As I said at the end of my comment, the game looks incredible.
@DennisReynolds Careful, some of these commenters seem to get bent out of shape if you make comparisons to Florida.
@YoureTooSlowBro imagine giving decent coverage to what will inevitably be the biggest game of the generation and probably the decade. Staggering lol
@Uromastryx I feel it'll be 79.99 to test the waters , charging anymore will cut a lot of people out
@Sergo I wish I could downvote this message. So wild that in such a short span everyone went from “everything costing too much!!!” So people starting to go “oh well they should charge a premium. It’s worth it” or breaking down cost and entertainment hours to justify price hikes.
Crazy times.
@StandardMario yeah and they should go play with traffic, but we don't get everything we want
