Amazon's big Tomb Raider TV adaptation is apparently in trouble.
As reported by Daily Mail, the show, which picked up Phoebe Waller-Bridge as writer and is rumoured to star Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner, is "dead", according to the outlet's sources.
The report says the show has been stuck in development hell, with scripts from Waller-Bridge either failing to emerge or not ready for filming.
Turner, who was apparently set to play the lead role as Lara Croft, is tied up in other projects for much of 2025.
To top it all off, Jennifer Salke, who green lit the Tomb Raider adaptation and was "personally overseeing the project", is no longer head of Amazon Studios.
"I hear that it is not going ahead," one source claims. The show "still doesn't have a script", according to Puck scribe Matt Belloni.
It all sounds pretty messy, doesn't it? With the lead writer seemingly not producing the goods and the show's star unable to commit, Tomb Raider's splashy Amazon show could well be in jeopardy.
Hopefully some sort of official word comes out about the show soon; it would be a shame if it all went down the drain.

I just want a new Tomb Raider game please...
A relic of an era whereby Phoebe Waller Bridge was getting hired for projects far out of her comfort zone.
You find that with Hollywood for some odd reason. Someone becomes cock of the walk due an unrelated project and suddenly they seem to be involved with everything.
After the Netflix show is anyone upset this thing is dead.
Couldn't they just get another writer, seems like an easy thing to make with all the source material.
We all knew it would suck, so nothing of value was lost. But I'm still salty about cancelling 2nd Alicia Vikander movie.
In the words of the great Jeremy Clarkson:
Oh no! Anyway…
Sorry, but Sophie Turner simply wouldn't work as Lara Croft.
@Oram77 this!
With Pheobe as the writer Im glad it's dead. The show would be all sorts of butchered like the last Indiana movie.
Meh.
I stick with the Netflix show, which is coming back for a second season. Its not a favorite of mine but I honestly prefer animated over live-action.
@naruball Imo she is a mid actress
i'm sure the game is as well.
@heavyartillery56 she really is. I didn't realize it until I saw her in Dark Phoenix. Not terrible (like Gal Gadot), but definitely mid.
@naruball my thoughts exactly.
I didn't know this show was being considered, but read Sophie Turner to play Lara Croft, just doesn't work.
While she does carry a "posh" air about her, her tone carries her in to the whiney/stroppy aristocracy role a lot of the time. Not a fit.
@ZeroSum absolutely. She's a decent fit for roles that require a a whiny aristocrat perhaps, but other than that...
@Vectrex yeah, if they ever make another tomb raider it’s gonna be with new lara and not the classic one from the originals.
Waller killed 007 for me and Turner as Laura croft? The world's gone bat ***** crazy...
@Northern_munkey @Nepp67
She had no writing role in the Indiana Jones movie and a minor writing credit in No Time to Die.
@ChrisDeku I didn't mention indiana Jones and her involvement in no time to die however small was enough..massively over rated writer in my opinion.
@ZeroSum It's called acting. People can create different personas.
Amazon did such an amazing job with Fallout and it absolutely nailed the theme and humour of the games. I'm hoping that they have the same quality control over this project moving forward.
@SMJ it takes talent, and talent is not universal.
Take Will Smith for instance. Will Smith is notorious for always playing Will Smith in different situations. Compare that to someone like James McAvoy who can sell you the idea that he's Professor X in one role, a split-personality psychopath next or a caring, compassionate father.
Some people have the talent to act a range of roles. Some don't.
@ZeroSum In my opinion, Sophie Turner has a fantastic range. Game of Thrones, Joan.
@SMJ have you seen Dark Phoenix. If you have, what did you think of her acting?
Thank god. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is totally overrated and has been handed to many things that she should not be involved in.
Looks like good news.
It's for the best. All the movies were terrible. The animated show was not much better but it was at least watchable once.
I'm glad, this was going to be another "modern audience" disaster like the new Netflix show, I guess they got tired of the flops.
I thought the last tomb raider movie was by far the best one and the actress was a perfect lara croft I thought
@naruball I haven't watched that but I stand by my opinion that she's a good actress.
Have you watched her in Game of Thrones or Joan?
@Dan12836666 You mean TR movie with Alicia Vikander as Lara? I personally enjoyed it and she's more fit as Lara than Sophie Turner.
@PuppetMaster that's her name yes she's a good lara croft and she's damn attractive as well
@SMJ yes. She was great as Sansa, but I think that was largely thanks to the role that she was playing. Haven't seen Joan, but I liked the trailer.
Lara Croft is my favourite video game character of all time but even I couldn’t get through the first episode of this show. Hated the animation and no one cares about Jonah or Roth (please can we be done with them once and for all). They should focus 100% on Lara and forget about these dull side characters.
I’m actually done with ‘Survivor’ Lara in general tbh. It would have been fine to explore the survivor aspects in a single game but we didn’t need a whole trilogy of her whining and being a victim. Nobody wants a weak Lara who’s struggling with her mental health or whatever. We want fierce, intelligent Lara who’s a total badass and loves adventure. And she shouldn’t apologise for robbing tombs either.
I get it, she’s a woman and she should be a perfect role model… no. We need more morally grey female characters. Nobody cared that Nathan Drake was a treasure seeking a-hole. Why are women held to a different standard?
I can see an episodic “villain of the week” thing working for the story, but there has never been much intrigue in the games storylines. If they departed from the tone of the games it might work.
@naruball Joan is good. Definitely worth a watch.
@SMJ cheers for the recommendation. I'll sample it and see.
CD should stick to the Netflix anime then, if it's meant to be canon to the games' unified timeline. Future movies by Amazon/MGM don't need to be canon.
@ItsBritneyB_tch Yeah I agree it's like they can't just have fun female characters anymore, they have to be making a statement. This TV series seemed doomed by that sort of mentality.
It's probably a good thing that it's been canceled. She's a terrible writer and it's highly likely that the show would have sucked.
