Varlet is described as a 'school life RPG' in a similar vein to the Persona games. Basically, a bunch of teenagers have to balance their educations with otherworldly escapades.
Heading to PS5 on the 28th August via a worldwide release, Varlet's from developer Aquria, which most recently crafted 2023's CRYMACHINA. The Japanese studio's also behind several of the Sword Art Online games and The Caligula Effect.
Mechanically, Varlet's promising depth through its 'Triad' system, which determines available dialogue options and combat skills based on your decisions throughout the game's story.

Speaking of which, here's an eyeful of the opening movie (which is stuffed with the appropriate anime tropes).

Looks like something I could be into. Only question is will I have the time to add another RPG to my list this year? I still haven't gotten around to Daybreak 2 yet! Then I also have both the new Trails and the Sky remake as well later this year!
I'm drowning! 😂
Whilst I don’t want to be dismissive; I think i’m done with the whole school-based JRPG thing for a while.
Considering this studios past work I expect this game to be on the grindy and repetitive side.
I can't tell what the story is about, so I can't tell if I'd like this.
I'll wait to learn more but if it plays like SAO and the Caligula Effect i might struggle to get into this one. Will wait and see.
I really want to see more of this!

I will keep saying this till the cows come home. Always go into Furyru games with mid expectations. The concepts are great however the delivery usually lacks. See Crystar and Crymachina as examples
Keeping my eye on this one, I'm usually hit and miss with Furyu games. Last couple have been a bit rubbish but I enjoyed The Alliance Alive, Monark, Unchained Blades and Lost Dimension.
Man, FuRyu always has some interesting game idea but the studio is severely underfunded. Monark for example, was such a great and fresh idea for its time, but the gameplay was such a mess.
These guys really deserve a good funding. Hopefully Sega will buy them off.
That being said, I will definitely get this as it seems like at least the production value has gone up.
Caligula effect was already their school JRPG. Very interesting premise and the story wasn't bad but the combat and overall presentation didn't really hold up. I wonder how they'll go with this one.
It looks pretty neat — I might check it out. I’m playing a similar game now on the Switch called “The Hundred Line - Last Defense Academy” and it’s pretty good.
Persona 4 is my all time favorite game but I’m not really into this. The character designs look too generic.
It’s really hard to mimic what Persona does. Its art style with gorgeous UI’s & menus, party members that make you feel like you’re part of the crew, flashy combat that’s both simple yet complex, unique takes on mythology with the stories and demons/shadows, and instantly classic music that you can hum for days is all very difficult to replicate. I wish this project luck but Persona is truly one of a kind for a reason.
I liked CRYMACHINA a lot and thought the Caligula games were pretty decent. They all half-arsed the cutscenes though, so the voice acting did some heavy lifting. I also find it difficult to get excited about a school setting.
Being an adult playing as school kids isn't for me anymore.
