Update []:
It seems the early momentum behind Split Fiction has continued through its first week on sale, as the game has now officially sold over two million copies.
This follows on from news (below) that the game had moved one million copies in its first two days.
The updated sales figure comes via a post on social media:
Original Story: Hazelight has confirmed that its latest co-op dedicated PS5 title Split Fiction sold more than one million units inside the first 48 hours of availability. This makes it the studio's fastest-selling game to date, with A Way Out taking two weeks to achieve the feat and It Takes Two one month.
The Swedish developer announced the sales update on Bluesky, where it added: "The love you all show for our game is overwhelming! Everyone here at Hazelight are beyond happy — and we can’t stop enjoying your amazing reactions!" In the UK at least, it was the best-selling physical game of last week, and 89 per cent of purchases were for a PS5 version.
Given the game's co-op requirement, it actually means that upwards of two million people could have started playing Split Fiction over the weekend. You can't play it without another person in your game, and the free Friend Pass allows anyone to join — even if they don't own a copy.
It's little surprise the game is selling so well, given the clear quality on show. In our Split Fiction PS5 review, we awarded a 10/10 rating and concluded: "This is proof, if more was needed, that Josef Fares and his team has found a really special formula, one that allows them to explore an incredible range of gameplay that's only enhanced by its singular co-op vision."
Did you buy Split Fiction over the weekend? Let us know in the comments below.

Not for me don't play co-op games but good for them Josef seems like a cool passionate dude ^__^
My daughter and I played this on and off all weekend and I am just completely blown away. Not only is every level like a roller coaster ride with new game mechanics each time, somehow when you think it's peaked, it just keeps getting better and better. It is truly amazing and a complete joy to play. Talk about knocking it out of the park, this one got knocked out of the galaxy.
I haven't played it, but I admire the addition of a feature like friend pass. I'm really happy the game has been a success for them.
Good to see something new and original recognition.
I got it via friend pass on steam somehow. i still don’t get how i got it free
Me and my brother are really enjoying it so far. I love how you never know what you'll end up doing next. I think I still prefer A Way Out though. Something about that game really clicked with me.
It's just that good. Hope it sells 30 million or more. It brings people together. It's funny, smart, logical and completely bananas at the same time. Truly a special video game that can help people bond. And on the damn couch!!! Deserves every accolade it gets. My wife and I have been just cheesy grinning while playing this masterpiece.
Can’t wait to play this one with my wife but we have to finish cat quest 3 first! We are close I think.
Well-deserved success! My daughter and I loved It Takes Two and we love Split Fiction even more!
Already? But how!
@nomither6 You don't actually own the game then - you can just play it in its entirety with someone that did buy the game.
So basically because I bought the game, I could potentially play through the entire game with anyone and they wouldn't have to pay for it. But they wouldn't be able to play it without me or someone else that actually bought the game.
@James_42 oh , that’s cool
Game looks good, but not my style. Might pick it up for my daughter and her friends though.
Side note - I realize its probably for SEO, but anyone else get bothered by the titles for multiplat games always calling out the console? Were on a PS site, only reap need to call out platform in the title is when its not the ps5....
This studio focused on a certain type of games more than a decade ago and perfected the formula. The technology is very good, not overly ambitious, the game runs like a dream, no distracting graphics modes etc. The artstyle is distinctive. It’s not 30+ hours long, but just long enough to have a blast. All family members can sit in front of the TV and have fun playing or watching it.
Reminds me „a bit“ of some PS5 first-party game from 2024…
Glad to see it doing so well, maybe we can get some more couch co-op games now. There have been a couple of others recently, Lego Horizon and Cat Quest 3, but I was disappointed in a couple of others not having it, like Funko Pop and Mario and Luigi Brothership. Maybe Nintendo will go all in on Switch 2.
Sony, instead of chasing GaaS, should perhaps gun for fun co-op experiences. It’s what gaming is all about!
Looks like the game is on the same pace as KCD2, which I believe sold 2 million in it's first week too!
Most of my friends are either non gamers or casual gamers that focus more on their family or partner, so it may not be for me, but how refreshing to hear lately stories about such games selling well.
Go woke go rich i guess haha. Glad its doing well even if i will never play it.
Deserves every bit of success, the game is a masterpiece.
Well I bought two of those! Amazon lost my first one, so I had to go to HMV of all places, which still had some in stock!
@GnomishViking AAAActually, they weren't wrong /s
As soon as something becomes successful, they claim it wasn't really woke because it wasn't pushed down their throats.
Notice how they claimed that Concord failed because it was woke, whereas Black Myth Wukong was one of the top games because it wasn't? Yet today we heard of another live service game that performed as bad as Concord, yet it wasn't woke.
Presenting facts to anti woke people is like playing chess with a pigeon.

Yep, let's all just automatically forget about Forspoken, Suicide Squad, Star Wars Outlaws, Saints Row Reboot, Concord, Dustborn, Unknown 9 Awakening, Dragon Age Vailguard, Prince of Persia The Lost Crown, etc because 1 game succeeded among a dozen flops lol
@ashipaw Baldur's Gate 3, Horizon FW, Kingdom Come 2, Monster Hunter Wilds (oh yes you lot are calling it woke), Indy (yes it was being called woke), Metaphor, Spidey 2 and more. I can cherry pick as well and i love how you also pick games that had zero marketing to the point chuds were giving them more press then they were giving themselves.
Also please explain how Star Wars Outlaws and PoP The Lost Crown are woke? Come on tell me what makes them woke?
@ashipaw How PoP Lost Prince is woke? Don't tell me it just because the protag is african with Killmonger hair lmao.
@DennisReynolds Wait, some people called Metaphor woke???
@PuppetMaster Giving its themes it pretty much is though its more under modern day "woke" rather then its original meaning.
