Devolver Digital has announced a new mode for its charming action adventure, The Plucky Squire.
Dubbed Streamlined Mode, this new way to play essentially strips out some of the tutorials, hand-holding, and less necessary dialogue, taking control away from players less often.
The game is clearly geared towards a family audience, so the regular story mode's frequent control reminders, tutorials, and cutscenes make sense in that context. However, for more experienced players, the Streamlined Mode removes some of that hand-holding.
"You can still play the game as it was before, but a new abridged Streamlined Mode has been added for anyone who’d prefer a less hand-holdy experience," reads the press release. "This trims less necessary dialogue, removes or reduces camera hints, cuts out some tutorial content, and control of the game is taken away from you less often."
The mode is available now on PC, and will soon be deployed in a new patch for console versions, including PS5 of course.
This update also "adds classy new dialogue portraits for the major characters, as well as some general bug fixes and other small improvements".

Wish that mode was available from the start as it definitely dampened the experience for me
I gave up on this game after about 6 hours. The whole time it felt like you could be creative in how you solved puzzles but it quickly became clear there was always only one way, using the same handful of mechanics each time.
I also gave up on it because everything was a bit too chatty and on the nose. Might give it another shot now.
Sounds good! I found it a bit slow for sure so maybe I'll give it another go
Got my platinum won’t be playing it again.
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk
Congrats. Have they fixed the chapter issue for trophies yet?
I really enjoyed my time with this and saw it through to the end; don’t mind a bit of hand-holding indie goodness here and there between the bigger, tougher AAA’s I’m playing. But great option for those looking to try it!
@thefourfoldroot1 I played it at launch and had to play it twice because of that.
Despite appearances, I'm really a big ol' soft serve, Family Man (as Guile would say). This game went way too hard in the twee, Fisher Price direction in the first bit. I said it here before, but it's pre-school level. I don't know there's a certain age rating that makes me uncomfortable, like the FBI is going to crash through my front door.
@thefourfoldroot1 I bet it's still broken no doubt, been broken for a while and yet they had time for this new mode, shows where their priority lies I guess 😕
Cool. I stopped playing it because it felt like the video game adaptation of shows i watched in elementary school.
"Can YOU spell this word?... Thats right! S-P-E-L-L!"
After a while i just thought i was the wrong demographic for it and stopped. This streamlined version weirdly enough makes me retroactively think less of it. I guess it's supposed to be for all ages? 😂
One of the reasons I stopped playing it. It just felt like I'm playing a toddler game. Peppa pig level game that started to bore me to death with all the annoying interruptions.
I was expecting a collectathon, and I got a game that was more hand holdy than Putt-Putt.
@Brydontk It would seem that it's now very fashionable to release the game (as it should be) months after release. Because....
I have to say, I couldn't get into the game - not sure it was the "heavy handed" tutorials, or just the overly simplistic gameplay (as least at the start), but I couldn't justify the time to find out if it was going to improve.
Also - just a quick clarifying point... I think it's spelt T-H-I-S W-O-R-D
I swerved this in the end as I heard there was bugged trophies and the game was too simple. Still intend on playing it eventually but want to wait until the platinum isn't prone to bugging out. by the sounds of it, a required second playthrough for trophies would be very tedious so I want to be able to get it done in one playthrough.
That's a smart change, surprised it didn't get picked up in testing as it grated pretty quickly, almost every new screen you entered the gameplay stopped and they started yapping.
