Update []: As we reported earlier, SEGA announced a VF Direct to follow its announcement of a new Virtua Fighter game. In truth, this didn’t have a whole lot of new information on the upcoming title, although it did demonstrate just how much investment the publisher is putting into the property.
Across a 30-minute video, it announced a whole host of updates and initiatives, including a greater emphasis on Virtua Fighter e-sports competitions around the world. The series will feature at EVO Japan 2025 next year.
A new update for Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown is available now on the PS4, which includes a laundry list of improvements, including returning moves, improved combos, balance updates, and even better hit effects. This will be used as the foundation for a new Steam release, too.
On the top of the new game, producer Riichiro Yamada didn’t share much, but he pointed out that he wants the new title to innovate just like the original, which was the first 3D fighting game of the time. He simply said he thinks the sequel will “exceed” the expectations of fans.
More information is expected in the near-future, but for now, all we can really ascertain is that SEGA is betting big on Virtua Fighter making a comeback in a big way. And it’s starting right now with major improvements to existing Virtua Fighter games, and investment into the competitive scene.
Original Story:
A new Virtua Fighter game is in-development now at Yakuza maker Ryu ga Gotoku Studio – and we’ll see more of the release in action during a VF Direct imminently.
We’ll update this article once the new information is shared, but for now all we have to go on is a new look for series star Akira in a clip where he’s battling fellow veteran Sarah Bryant.
No platforms have been confirmed, but we’d be shocked if this wasn’t available on the PS5. You can catch the VF Direct from 12AM EST, and as we mentioned, we’ll update this article once we know more.

Yep im ready. The game looks good. Stream happening in a few.
Akira outfit reminds me of old Li Shuwen from Kenji.
In-game graphic looks nice but i need more info.
Max Dood currently screaming
Finally, best FG news at TGA for me personally.
Let’s gooo! Looking forward to more info on this one, it’s been a long time coming.
It’s what we all wanted.
I was saying to Sammy, they should just make a Like a Dragon / Yakuza fighting game.
This new Virtua Fighter is 100% going to be that. Half the cast will be Kiryu and his mates.
@ShogunRok They should also add Ryo Hazuki. Having VF, Yakuza, and Shenmue represented would be amazing!
Virtua Fighter has always been my favourite 3D fighting series, so I'm more than ready for a new entry
I sure hope RGG gets their writers working on this. I love mortal kombats approach of building a strong campaign in a fighting game and know RGG has the stuff to deliver a strong campaign as well.
I wonder how many people work at RGG, no other studios releases so many games so often
@ShogunRok They did, it was called Shenmue
@PuppetMaster based Kenji reader, that series, Virtua Fighter and Shenmue are what got me to take up Bajiquan for many years. There's a sequel out now supposedly
Looking forward to seeing Sarah Bryant in stunning 4K.
They need to look at what capcom did with their world tour mode for sf6 - which ended up being the main reason I and a lot of others bought it in the end.
Happy for the Virtua Fighter fans, but I initially thought this was a Shenmue reboot and got overexcited. Damn it!
@ArcticSin Wait, there's a sequel for Kenji?! This is the first time i heard about it 😮
Things have come full circle:
The team behind Like a Dragon are making a Virtua Fighter game.
Like a Dragon series spawned off of lessons learned and ideas from Shenmue.
Shenmue's original concept was to be a Virtua Fighter Adventure game.
We lost our damn minds when we saw this! It's finally back!
Always preferred Virtua Fighter to Tekken back in the day. It just felt the more technical of the two and not as spammy.
@GamingFan4Lyf Was just about to say the same! Shenmue was originally supposed to feature Akira knocking about, beating fools up. Just need a spin off from this and we've come full circle
I LOVE THIS SERIES! I'm hoping we get a Fighters Megamix sequel too at some point. I love the Fighting Vipers cast
Y’ALL I am straight up crying right now. I feel like the dragon has been awoken from slumber. I was ready to step away from gaming after a few releases I want in 2025 come out. Was even concerned that I might be out growing the hobby. But no I simply needed games that I wanted to play. Nintendo has kept me engaged but there are certain games they don’t make. And I feel like almost every lost franchise that I love is getting some kind of attention right now. (Still waiting on TES6) Okami sequel, Onimusha, Shinobi, Ninja Gaiden side scroller…modern games like ghost of yotei and AC Shadows so much getting added to my hype list. I really need these games to be good but I haven’t felt this much anticipation in a while (as in for MULTIPLE games). Please be good. I may get back into stick building over this. Years of survey polls and emails to SEGA may have finally been answered. Cannot wait to see the VFCD response.
I'm glad the series is getting some love, the RGG people are great devs.
the cameos at the end of the video are crazy lol
I have no doubt the game will be fun to play, I just hope it has good single player offerings.
I'll be there on day one!
I tried playing the latest VF on PS4 but there wasn't much there for a single player only guy like me. It felt barebones.
@GamingFan4Lyf RGG has a lot of Devs who were ones that created VF in the first place, so it's a much simpler connection, they're just back to making VF. It's where the VF team went and has been this whole time, making LaD.
Nearly all of the arcade games featured in LaD are ones they all personally worked on or have some connection to, like Sonic the Fighters using their VF engine, in the first place, it's like their own little greatest hits. They're a bit of a "Sega All-Stars" team but it's not something that really gets mentioned.
