Following a few weeks of leaks and teases, Mortal Kombat 1 has been officially announced for PS5. It's releasing on 19th September 2023, and you can get your first glimpse in the trailer above. There'll be an "immersive story campaign", reimagined versions of classic characters, and rollback netcode for online play. If you pre-order the game, you shall gain access to a PS5 beta in August.

"Discover a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe created by the Fire God Liu Kang. Mortal Kombat 1 ushers in a new era of the iconic franchise with a new fighting system, game modes, and fatalities," the official website teases. This very much appears to be the reboot the series has been teasing, with "reimagined versions of iconic characters as they’ve never been seen before, along with a new fighting system, game modes, bone krushing finishing moves, and more".

Confirmed characters so far include Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, and Johnny Cage. There'll then be a separate list of Kameo Fighters who can "assist during matches, creating expanded gameplay possibilities for players".

The base game will cost $69.99, or you can opt for the Premium Edition (available in both physical and digital forms) for $109.99, which bundles in a Kombat Pack, five days of early access, and 1,250 Dragon Krystals (premium currency). The Kombat Pack includes a Johnny Cage character skin with the likeness of Jean-Claude Van Damme at launch, and then six new playable characters and five Kameo fighters after release.
