GTA 6 Grand Theft Auto 1

As you’ve no doubt already seen, an unprecedented leak over the weekend exposed an enormous amount of confidential footage from GTA 6 in frankly staggering fashion. Game developers from all around the globe, including Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann, have already spoken out in support of developer Rockstar. And now the world-renowned label has released a statement.

“We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorised third-party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems,” the message starts, “including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto. At this time, we do not anticipate any disruption to our live game services nor any long-term effect on the development of our ongoing projects.”

There had been speculation on Sunday evening that GTA 5’s source code was in the public domain, and this could lead to untold consequences to GTA Online, but it appears the developer is not concerned. Others had speculated that GTA 6’s development could grind to a halt while the team gets on top of the leak, but that doesn’t appear to be the case either.

Nevertheless, the studio is understandably upset: “We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way,” the statement continues. “Our work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned, and we remain as committed as ever to delivering an experience to you, our players, that truly exceeds expectations.”

Rockstar concluded that it won’t be rushed into revealing more details: “We will update everyone soon and, of course, will properly introduce you to this next game when it’s ready. We want to thank everyone for their ongoing support through this situation.”
