Yes, we've had a number of games attempt to capture the Dark Souls formula in side-scrolling fashion. Many of them are very good — Hollow Knight, Death's Gambit, and Blasphemous spring to mind — and this latest example, The Last Faith, shows a lot of promise. From publisher PlayStack and developer Kumi Souls Games, it's a 2D action game that combines Souls-esque grit and challenge with the open-ended exploration of a Metroidvania.

You play as Eric, the latest gaming protagonist suffering from amnesia. "Soon he will discover he is in a race against time as his mind and conscience begins to deteriorate in front of him," the press release tells us. "His desire for salvation from this affliction sets him on a cursed mission that crosses paths with ancient religions and divinities".

As you can see from the trailer, it has a beautiful (and bloody) pixel art style that evokes shades of Bloodborne, but it also looks like you'll be able to wield some powerful magical spells. There's some Castlevania in the mix as well with some of those abilities. It seems like a real mash-up, but the end result could be excellent.

Fortunately, there's not a huge wait to find out if we should put faith in, er, The Last Faith. It's heading to PS5 and PS4 sometime this year. Are you excited for The Last Faith? Tell us in the comments section below.
