The PlayStation 5 has topped NPD hardware charts in the US for the month of January 2022. While exact sales stats aren't shared, Sony's latest system was the best selling platform in both units sold and dollars earned. It beat out the Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch simply based on the fact Sony managed to produce enough consoles to make it to the top. Supply and demand are still completely out of whack, however.
Elsewhere, Call of Duty: Vanguard was once again the best selling PS5, PS4 title, but it didn't shift the most copies overall. That accolade went to Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which sold best across all platforms in January. Rainbow Six Extraction was the only noteworthy new entry in the PlayStation specific chart for the month, debuting in fifth position. The rest of the top 10 is made up of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, sports titles, Ghost of Tsushima, Battlefield 2042, and Far Cry 6.
God of War, meanwhile, rose an incredible 139 places to chart in fifth place in the overall NPD software top 20 list. It doesn't appear in the chart broken down into PS5, PS4 specific sales, so the huge rise must be attributed to its PC release.

Pokemon winning the month while only on the market for 4 days is pretty impressive.
@Reyren I'm equally impressed by MK8 being in the top 8 so many years later. No wonder Nintendo is throwing DLC at it for a few years instead of committing to a #9.
Pointless charts for games without digital sales as most are sold that way.
@Kooky_Daisuke It's only Nintendo and NBA 2K22 that don't report digital sales for NPD.
I guess the demand for Xbox Series S is cooling off...That sku seems to be the most readily available in stores & online (even being $20 off MSRP in January at times)
@uptownsoul Not necessarily true. From the source themselves: “ It's a supply constrained environment. Whomever has units will sell the most. Doesn't reflect true consumer demand.”
every time I look at the top software sales each month, I just hang my head. Humanity is really just tanking....
@uptownsoul
In the UK there are thousands of series s
sitting on shelf’s available.
Even early this week Series x stock popped up in UK superstore across country and took a good 48 hours to sell and even some still have stock today.
Xbox needs AAA exclusives that people want to play not old games etc on game pass.
King of consoles Word up, son.
@awp69 well it is true that the Series S was discounted $20 below it's $299 MSRP in some spots here in the USA during January...
Also, I find it funny when PS5 outsells the others it's only about availability...when the others outsell PS5, there's always reasons bigger than availability.
@uptownsoul
Indeed. The reality is catching up with false narratives.
‘simply based on the fact Sony managed to produce enough consoles’ is telling everything you need to know.
Only thing keeping PS5 down a month in the US is availability... whatever number Sony makes, it will sell here.
Even more impressive is that SONY is selling PS5 at a premium. Both Microsoft and especially Nintendo have Budget options padding the sales.
Indeed. Quoting the source of the article’s information is a false narrative so I guess this entire article must be false.
@MFTWrecks
Mortal Kombat 8 still doing that good?? lol
Ever since I got my PS5 it's been sitting in its box doing nothing most of the time. To put into perspective: I only clocked up 20 hours playtime in 2021 whereas on PS4 I clocked up almost 1500 hours. PS5 needs more games that are Native to it and not also available on PS4 IMHO.
Possibly the most underwhelming generation to date so far.
I've been glued to my Switch anyway and now that Legends Arceus is out I've been glued to that especially.
@RubyCarbuncle
Dude, send it to me, please. I am too poor to buy one right now. You obviously don't need it.
I'm a bit surprised to see Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5 on the chart. I can't imagine buying either of those games as you can just play them for as little as $1 (like me), but typically around $10.
@awp69 "Quoting the source of the article’s information is a false narrative so I guess this entire article must be false."
nobody's claiming that...
Here's the flip-flop logic:
Stock availability being the major reason ONLY applies when PS5 is the top seller...
...when Switch or Xbox outsells PS5, stock availability is rarely, if ever, mentioned
@uptownsoul as it should. It’s the secondary console option. Geared towards 1080P players or kids on a budget and the such. Most players want the much much harder to find Series X. personally I like the Dual SKU system Sony went with better. Not the Microsoft approach is bad. But I’d rather have a $400 dollar digital series X then the $500 disk version that I will never buy a disk for. I’ve been Digital exclusive for close to 10 years now.
I got the Digital PS5 and am loving that SKU. Really wish the shortages would get better soon. There’s ton of accessories I want for both that are hard to find. Plus my little girl wants her own Switch lite in pink. Not easy to find.
@TheCollector316 I bought the Digital version of Halo infinite and I have Gamepass. I buy most the big games I want digitally. Gamepass and the upcoming Spartacus for PS5 are my discovery services to try things I don’t want to pay full retail for. Then if I like it I get 20% off to buy and own it. It’s a fantastic service.
@Agramonte you can’t pad sales. Either people want to buy something or they won’t.consoles are to expensive to buy it without intent to play games on it. Unless it’s the PS2 selling to non gamers for a DVD. Suppose that’s padding sort of, cause they don’t game. Sony don’t sell a handheld so they can’t reach a $200 price point and they don’t make a less powerful version to reduce price like the S. I actually like Sonys dual SKU. I own the digital cause I only buy digital games. So they made the perfect sku for me there plus the disk drive looks ugly as heck on the console. Seems tacked on and not designed around.
Ps5 g.o.a.t 🐐. 👑.word up son
Yes, yes...keep surging precious. Can't wait to see more of those PS5 exclusive bangers
@TheCollector316 There are still plenty of people who are fine with shelling out $60 for games. Not everyone is on a budget and need to use services like Gamepass to try or play games.
Nice one SONY But will we ever see the day(it feels like never) that I can just visit a shop and buy a PS5 or go online and buy one easily :-/ I got 1 tho but by luck and if my PS5 dies I feel like I will never find one easily
Considering the series S is permanently in stock and the PlayStation 5 isn't and it still came out on top just shows not many are interested in the series S and even switch sales must be slowing down.
@RubyCarbuncle compare it to the first 14 months of ps4 (which was very disappointing), and you'll find that ps5 did it way better.
@2here2there Because most games for it were also available on PS4. Ratchet and Clank Demon's Souls and Returnal are the only true worthwhile Native PS5 games so far, to me personally.
I got my PS5 in January. Glad I could finally contribute to the sales numbers. lol
Digital sales not included likely mean Mario Kart 8 is actually #2 or #3, then?
