With the Australian Open in full swing, there’s never been a better time to announce a new tennis sim. And as publishers like Nacon continue to chase Top Spin’s glory, a new contender has entered the (Rod Laver) arena: Kalypso is serving up Matchpoint: Tennis Championships on the PlayStation 5 and PS4 this coming Spring 2022.

The reveal trailer is an odd one, as it appears to be CGI rather than real gameplay footage. However, the publisher’s talking a big game: “By using the right tactics, intelligent player positioning, and utilising authentic ball physics […] players will be able to top the tennis tables in tournaments and competitions around the world. Sophisticated character animations and unprecedented player control are combined, creating realistic rallies in which every swing of the racket counts.”

That all sounds great, but as we’ve seen from the likes of Tennis World Tour 2, you need a vast library of animations to pull off a top-notch tennis title. There’ll be an extensive career mode with a rivalry system, and 16 real-life players will be available at launch, including the likes of Nick Kyrgios, Garbine Muguruza, Heather Watson, Danill Medvedev, and Kei Nishikori.

The game will also feature clothing and equipment from a number of famous brands, like HEAD, Uniqlo, and Nike. As an initial announcement, our attention has certainly been piqued – but we’ll need to get our hands on the game and give it a go before getting too excited. It’s nice to have a new Grand Slam contender coming to PlayStation, though – surely someone will top Top Spin 4 one day, eh?
