Which graphics mode is best in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart? Based on our experience with Fidelity, Performance, and Performance RT, we’d recommend the last option; in our opinion, the sacrifices you make in resolution are more than made up for by the stunning reflections and responsive gameplay. Don’t just take our word for it, though: the experts are beginning to put together comparison videos.
This clip shows that Performance RT has very few compromises overall, with great shadow quality, anisotropic filtering, and scene density. You do definitely see a perceptible dip in resolution, but the performance is near rock-solid, wavering only slightly from its 60 frames-per-second target when jumping through rifts. It’s an outstanding achievement from Insomniac Games.
Obviously the mode you select will come down to personal preference, and there’s no right or wrong answer here: all three have their own unique strengths and advantages. This is why offering options is ideal, though: yes, there are naturally trade-offs, but all three modes are well executed based on our experience, so just pick the one that’s best for you.

Performance RT it is then. Looks like the best of both as it should be.
@ElMarko I sure don’t. 1080p and 4K look the same to me. But 30 FPS vs 60 is night and day
Gonna watch this on the 4K screen and report back.
@ElMarko Video is rendered at 2160p/60fps. There's some YouTube compression, but it's in 4K for sure. Just change your settings.
Performance RT all the way. The difference between 4K and 1080p/1440p isn't too big on my tv (55inch 4K tv), but the difference between 30 fps and 60 is huge.
I'm going for Performance RT on my first play through.
Was hoping it would turn up today in the post dam it!
Mine arrived today and i really dont know what to go with - sadly i only have a 1080p set. I assume Performance RT mode is best for me?
@Rob_230 That would be my choice matey!
Wow, the reflections are brilliant. I'm having that in performance RT mode.
I'm sure it actually looks even better without YT compression but just based on this video - there definitely is a difference in resolution and some minor details between the modes (the only big difference being the lack of RT reflections in performance mode).
I'm still debating doing the first playthrough in 30 fps for the maximum visual spectacle but I'm not too sure anymore
@Rob_230 on a 1080p screen I'd definitely go straight to Performance RT.
@Total_Weirdo @Voltan Thanks both!!
Playing through it right now on Fidelity mode. It's glorious.
I'll try one of the 60 fps modes after.
My copy will be arriving today (so a day early) and I wonder if the patch will be available today or on release date? If I start playing in Fidelity mode then I'll be fine playing in 30fps. I'll most likely play with Performance RT mode in 60fps though, meaning I won't be able to go back to 30fps.
ahhh stuck here on a 1080p monitor when working I can't tell any difference besides frame rate. Maybe I should get one of those new Imacs? hmmm....
@AgentGuapo see I'm the other way, I notice a huge difference between HD and UHD (although to be fair mine's a 55" LG B9), but can't tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps
What's a bit worrying about fidelity mode is not only does it not look all that different from RT Performance, it also drops frames from time to time, going down to 28. Two frames might not seem like much, but any frame drops at all can give the game a kind of rough feeling. After all, 2 frames dropped from 30 is roughly a 7% change. If it was 3 frames dropped, that's obviously a 10% change. So these seemingly small amount can feel quite significant since 30 is such a low number to begin with.
@Matroska YouTube compresses the video quality a lot. The only way to really see the difference is if you have the game yourself and a 4K TV.
Performance ray tracing.word up son
@Octane Yeah but I've seen 4k videos on YouTube that clearly look like 4k, so it's not like YouTube forces 4k to look the same as 1080p. I can typically tell when the video I'm watching is 4k as opposed to 1080p.
I'm also thinking of things like Yakuza 7 where the 4k 30fps mode was indistinguishable from the lower res 60fps mode other than feeling awful to play thanks to half the framerate. Maybe games have so many filters, post processing effects, motion blur etc that the difference between 4k and lower res is (quite literally) blurred. Or maybe it's because 4k modes in games typically aren't raw 4k but reconstructed 1440p? Dunno but either way the 4k modes in games don't stand out as much to be as, say, live action footage in 4k vs 1080p.
@ElMarko I don't know if you've watched it too fast after upload or on your mobile or something but here I am on my computer and there clearly is a 4K setting mate
If the 30fps isn't too jarring I will do my first playthrough in fidelity!
I just now almost finished the 3rd playthrough of RC2016 to get the plat
Fidelity here since I don’t own a TV that supports 60 fps
Do we know the difference is resolution yet between the three modes? I can make an educated guess, but anything concrete? Thanks!
I am torn between Fidelity Mode and Performance RT. I think that I am leaning toward Fidelity because I want the highest resolution. 30 fps is not a dealbreaker for me, although with the chaos on screen in this game that feeling might change. Tough choice. I wish we could have a full resolution Performance RT mode.
@PinkLemonade According to the video:
Fidelity - 3840x2160
Performance - 1440x2160
Performance RT - 1080x2160
But obviously temporal injection ups the look of the game even in lower resolutions.
@AFCC ain't that a beautiful thing that we get options that best suit our needs !
@elchebib just finished my 3rd playthrough tuesday, that Groovitron trophy is a b*tch.
Team Fidelity!!!!!
@Bluetrain7 Thanks! I didn't get to watch the video. I appreciate it!
It's crazy how taxing RT is on hardware. I don't want to play my next gen games in 1080p on my 75 inch 4K TV. Happy developers are giving us options! Also, it looks like the norm moving forward for most visually demanding games is going to be 4K/30?
@Katsuhono I still HATE to have to pick one option
I had time to watch this but I'm not sure it's accurate, is it? Insomniacs have their own tech to reconstruct to 4k a bit like FSR so there s more to it that just dynamic resolution. Well I'm no tech guy but just from what info I read.
Sitting about 2.5 meters away from my 65”, you can see the resolution difference if you stand still and flip from fidelity to performance RT but I mean you really have to look at edges etc to catch it.
Performance RT all the way.
