Sony’s save transfer protocol, when shifting progress from the PlayStation 4 versions of games to the PS5, has been shoddy to say the least. Final Fantasy VII Remake – which released this week – requires you to install the PS4 version of the game, upload your progress to the game’s cloud, install the PS5 edition, and then download the data. It’s not world-ending, but it’s certainly inconvenient.
However, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order – which released natively on the PS5 today – changes everything. The next-gen edition can read the PS4 save data stored on your console, so you can pick up exactly where you left off. Obviously, this is the way things should have been from the start, but they haven’t and so this news actually represents a meaningful improvement.
“On PS5, ensure your console has the PS4 save data on system storage (either from previous PS4 version playtime on the console, download from cloud storage, or transfer via USB stick),” EA’s instructions explain. “From there, there will be an ‘Import PS4 System Save Data’ prompt on the start-up screen. Simply select that option and you will be able to utilise your older save data.”
Since this news came to light, fans have also pointed out that Saints Row: The Third Remastered handled save transfers in exactly the same way. It’s good news for those who haven’t transitioned to PS5 yet, because this signals a change in the way the next-gen console is able to read data, and thus should result in more streamlined upgrades moving forwards.

I wonder if this is something Sony changed with a system update (and kept quiet about it) or if these devs found some workaround that others (including Sony 1st party) couldn’t - which would be kinda weird.
Does trophies transfer to the PS5 as well? I’ve platinum Fallen Order already. Can anyone confirm this? Haven’t installed Fallen Order in my PS5 yet.
So a big F U to people without PS+ or USB sticks to transfer their save from their PS4 to their new PS5. Got it.
@Milktastrophe who are theses people without USB sticks?
@TwomanybuttonS I know, right?
@peppermillian
Sweet! Free platinum
@Icey664 Kind of a free platinum, over on psnprofiles a few people are having a few not pop and you have to go back to earn it. Even though my cloud save was 100% when it downloaded it reverted to 99% and I had to grind skill points again as I was missing a few skills. Nothing too bad though and 2 free plats in a week along with FFVII
I'm glad it was an auto-pop platinum because I'm sure I remember the game looking and performing better on PS4 than I just witnessed on my PS5.
Sadly I didn’t get the auto platinum. I loaded up my 100% file and the only auto pop up was the Full House trophy. Closed the game and booted up again and not getting my all of my auto trophies. EA needs to fix this!
@peppermillian
It's even easier to transfer with your WIFI.
That's nice, I played the game last night, but the game keep crashing, it seems we have to fully download the game before playing it, unlike ff7 remake. Oh well, can't wait to see the new faster loading time.
@Milktastrophe You can transfer ps4 game save to ps5 console with usb stick. Only ps5 save that you can't move with usb stick.
@BuGGy2DaB you need to meditate for the trophies to pop
@Robinsad cool it worked, thanks.
@Robinsad I also had to load my 100% save, the new game+ save only popped a few of them. My guess is that this is the issue most people are having.
@j2c @Vivisapprentice I've heard meditating fixes the auto pop issues for trophies, you should give that a try.
@KidBoruto yep meditating is how you pop them, it popped 37 of the 40 trophies in one hit, it just lost a few of my acquired skills which I had to farm some kills, no biggie, was about an hour playtime. Game wasn’t very well optimised though, very janky and glitchy
@Vivisapprentice Glad to hear you didn't have to waste much time!
@peppermillian Mine sadly did not pop.
