Sony moves in mysterious ways these days, which can make predicting the platform holder’s plans a challenge to say the least. Here are a handful of things I’ve observed of late, however: the company’s announcing and showcasing games much closer to release these days; it tends to focus on one title at a time; it’s over E3 for the foreseeable future.
In the coming days, I imagine you’re going to hear a lot more about publishers’ plans for the forthcoming slate of summer events: Ubisoft is scheduled to host a livestream on 12th June, Geoff Keighley’s big Summer Game Fest bonanza will get underway a couple of days prior to that, and of course E3 2021 is being billed a digital event this summer.
But while PlayStation has attached its name to Summer Game Fest, I’d strongly suggest you temper your expectations: I’d put good money on its appearance amounting to little more than a Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart commercial, as the Insomniac Games platformer is out the following day. It will, of course, partner with third-party publishers – no doubt it’ll have marketing dibs on a ton of titles.
All that said, I think you should perhaps consider the possibility that Sony will not be holding a Future of Gaming-esque livestream – at least, not in June, anyway. It feels like a preposterous statement: big gaming events are always held in June, after all – but it’s worth remembering that the world is changing. E3 still exists, but it’s going to be largely unrecognisable this year.
Publishers control their own messages now, and PlayStation is definitely on a different cadence these days; it’s becoming more and more Nintendo-like by the day. Having placed a beacon on Returnal and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart earlier in the year, it looks like it’s now turning its attention to Horizon Forbidden West – and approximately 15 minutes of PS5 gameplay will be shown this week.
While this doesn’t rule out a second, broader briefing from the manufacturer – it just feels unlikely at this stage. The important thing to note is that this isn’t cause for panic: PlayStation has simply changed its focus, and is now announcing games much later. Heck, we hadn’t seen a whole lot of the aforementioned Rift Apart until very recently.
I think perhaps the key thing that we, as enthusiasts, need to keep in mind is that none of this is a problem per se. Sony’s been releasing bangers semi-regularly for a good few years now, and just because it kept quiet about the likes of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy: A Big Adventure until the very last minute doesn’t make them any lesser as games.
At some point, it’s going to need to come out and reveal what’s in store for the next 12 or so months of PS5 – but that moment will come when the company’s good and ready. From my perspective, the firm has zero interest in following a familiar timetable just because that’s the way things have always been done – it’ll talk when it wants to.
Are you expecting a PlayStation press conference next month at all? Do you think the company will want to speak around E3 or is it over that now? Step on stage in the comments section below.

It would be a bit crap if we didn’t get anything at all. I’d quite like to see what Sucker Punch, Pixelopus, Japan Studio and London Studio are up to. Even Naughty Dog surely have something in the works.
Traditional game conferences are slowly but surely fading into obscurity in today’s post pandemic environment. They cost too much money, are too much of a headache to organize, and fans are starting to see behind the smokescreen of fabricated hype and sizzle reels!
More smaller, personal showcases from our favorite publishers and developers are becoming more popular and in high demand. Fans are asking for communication and a more personal, direct approach that these large showcases just simply can’t provide.
Sony & Nintendo have learned to adapt quickly to establish their own footing in this new era of advertising and marketing to their fanbase. Media outlets are also adapting to this trickling of news spread over the year instead of large info-dumps of the past.
Me and Sammy have made a bet about this topic. I believe Sony will host a conference next month while he obviously doesn’t. Whoever loses must don a new avatar for an entire month — one of an anime lady of Rob and Stephen’s choosing.
I still think we'll get some form of 'E3 style' stream in either June or maybe July. Even if a lot of it comes from showing mostly third-party deal stuff that they can link to Sony. I think a first teaser for the God of War sequel is very likely if it's about a year at most away.
Who needs E3 when we have Horizon, sonic and dragon quest streams this week
Sony knows they need to have some big news during E3 week. I'll bet that the Horizon State of Play ends with a date for their next "Future of Playstation" event and is in early-mid June.
Hard to say. I definitely still want to see a proper trailer for God Of War this year (not necessarily featuring actual gameplay - something like last year’s HFW teaser will do). That would normally be accompanied by some 3rd party games but a lot of those will be featured in their publishers’ shows at E3 so I dunno.
@LiamCroft I like that.
@nessisonett Might be a lil too early for Sucker Punch but ya agreed. It would be even ***** to not at least say in advance, "we won't have a big showcase in June", since that's what most people are expecting. Also, I feel like its unlikely for them to not let us know in advance, Sony generally lets us know when they don't have big showcases, like in 2019.
If they're doing a Horizon SoP this week, they're probably setting things up for a show at some point about the second half of the year. Honestly, I'd rather just get a SoP when we're a couple of months away from a game's release.
I'm fine if sony want to focus on their already announced games first, like ratchet ps5, horizon fw, and god of war. After all of it is released, then maybe sony will focus on their next batch of games.
@Rubssi Maybe Bend would be a more likely inclusion seeing as they’re not working on Days Gone anymore!
Sony is definitely having a digital conference in the summer Sony just showing horizon forbidden west before their digital conference because it’s a already announced game that comes out this year. Sony probably saving their unannounced stuff for their digital conference I mean they do got over 25 exclusives in development.
i don't see it happen personally.
what we will see at things like e3 are indeed 3rd party deals like FF etc but no first party showcases exept for a ratchet trailer and horizon forbidden west.
the ps5 showcases where sony's big blowout event in a long time bust also the only ones for a long time to come.
i think they could do a big blowout in the middle of this gen again though.
altough sony should make it clear(er) that they won't be at e3 because i have seen quite a bit of youtube titles speculating about sony reveals at e3. and i think that will ofcourse lead to disappointment when it turns out that sony was not at e3 because they did not let people realy know in advance.
@Residentsteven insomniac release two games this gen they deserve some needed rest.
I think as console demand is still far out stripping supply it has no need to push further system sellers just yet as the early adopters and the effort involved in procuring a ps5 means your likely a big fan and will have bought the available first party titles. Sony knows its on to a winner with ps5 and will start pushing big again when there is enough ps5's in the wild to try convince casuals to pick one up or people in team red or green to switch sides. As for ps4 I imagine it's hit every target it ever set for that one
With the Horizon Forbidden West State of Play coming on Thursday, I don't think there'll be something comparable to PS5 Future of Gaming in June but rather later in the year instead and when being dependent on Horizon Forbidden West's release date.
For example if the 2 month gap between State of Play and release that has happened with GoT, Returnal and Ratchet & Clank continues with Horizon Forbidden West then I think there'd be a major showcase in late July.
For June, I think Sony will let the 3rd parties take the spotlight for new announcements like for example probably most of Square Enix's event is PS5 exclusive.
@LiamCroft Id be surprised if there were no events. Recent rumours seem to hint at the reveal of a new Souls like Final Fantasy game being revealed in June (https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLeaksAndRumours/comments/nhsn9o/next_final_fantasy_title_could_be_ps5_exclusive/)
I'm not expecting it because being tight-lipped and uncommunicative has become Sony's MO lately. Let us not forget how slowly and infrequently they drip fed information about the PS5 last year up until its launch, and they even opened pre-orders before we knew what the UI looked like.
Not to mention all the Vita developers who were utterly blindsided by the news that Sony would be closing its storefront in a matter of months, because their aversion towards sharing crucial information extends to even devs as well.
Sony can’t afford to not in my view. Microsoft are doing very well at the minute and the pace is on to keep a foot ahead.
I’ve got low expectations in general.
@itsfoz exactly Sony has to keep their foot on Microsoft necks to stay dominant in the console business.
@itsfoz microsoft hasnt released a new game for series x yet, but they are doing very well?
Yeah these conferences are going, I've been planning these conferences for years and it's a slow dying area. Unfortunately it can cost absurd money to even exhibit at these conferences, and when companies like Sony can save money and go digital, it makes a huge amount of sense. They are technically no worse off than going to a conference like E3. But on topic, no.. Sony doesn't need to announce anything, why hype the machine up more, when stock is low? Wouldn't make any logical sense.
@EquiinoxGII dude the ps5 isn’t gonna be sold out forever Sony has to give us a road map of ps5 games for 2022 and beyond.
I still think they will have one.this one is just one game.im pretty sure sony got breakfast.lunch and dinner. For more games to comes.keep on cooking sony.and im gonna eat the rice and beans with steak.peppori pizza.etc sony is making.word up son
The state of plays for Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us: Part 2 where also in a short period after each other. I think anything can be possible with Playstation. I think it is a good idea to have a separate shining moment for Horizon and then later perhaps have a live session or State of Play for any other upcoming games or whatever they want to show us.
They might do one a week or two after E3.
@Amppari Ha, don’t need to release a single game if you’re acquiring companies left right and centre, reducing the price of your subscription services and have a far better backward compatibility process/system.
So yeah, even though I have a PS5 and am a Sony fanatic, Xbox are doing very well.
I. Perfectly fine with games being announced later in the development cycle. Its a much harder thing to keep quiet these days but the whole 'LOOK AT THISSSSSS!!!!...........YOU CAN PLAY IT IN ABOUT THREE YEARS!!!!' Grew old pretty fast.
Yeah I don't see one in June either. I think July or August makes more sense.
Oh wow. I didn't expect any big event but now I'm hyped for a conference. Or even a couple. Pushsquare did that haha
Don't really care when they hold an event, just as long as it has substantial and solid information. Pretty tired now of being told about things way too early and then having to wait months (or years) for more news.
Take time developing things, and announce them when you're certain you can stick to a date without shoving out a rushed and/or unfinished product. If you don't know to within 6 months when it will be ready for release, we don't need to know about it.
Seems to me that Sony has stuff ready to show but wait to see what everyone else does before deciding how much they want to put in the open or not. A lot will depend on what Microsoft and Bethesda show at E3. If they have a conference that creates a lot of buzz I expect to see Sony come back with some state of play showing a bunch of games. If not then why would they bother showing their hand if it's not needed?
They'll show Horizon Forbidden West this week and see how things go, that's what I think anyway.
I don't think it has anything to do with the well known reduced importance of conferences and publishers picking their own times. E3 still has value, and clearly most of the big names still believe it does, even if it's in modified format. Everybody is there, pretty much, except EA (which never really was there, not for a long time), and Sony.
I don't know what happened between ESA and Sony, but it's been obvious for years there was some disagreement at some level that was never resolved, Sony picked up their ball and went home. Some of it may be strategic considering Sony even ended their own events, but more of it seems organizational at some irreconcilable level between the organizations.
There's various other gaming announcement events in June, so it would be a bit lame if Sony is quiet while the rest are hyping up their games.
I mean, Sony doesn't NEED E3, nor do they NEED Summer Games Show, or whatever else. That being said, there's no harm in capitalizing off of it. They know Microsoft is about to have a pretty big year. We all do. I think the Horizon thing isn't necessarily to dissuade the desire for a Future of Gaming show, so much as it is clearing out space for it. They did literally exactly this last year with Ghost of Tsushima. I think they're about to have a really crazy show, if I'm being honest.
@LiamCroft @get2sammyb I look forward to seeing Sammy's new avatar then, PlayStation will definitely be holding an event in June!
@4kgk2 oh course! But we already know what's slated to a degree, hyping it up will probably give them more slack, I'd like more info personally but I'm just not sure they will.
@OrigamiCrane i wonder if you never cared to watch E3 because you'd rather play games instead like me lol . i always heard of E3 too but never felt like turning the console off to watch an event about games i have to wait for to come out .
@4kgk2 its been over half a year since this PS5 debacle , its beyond ridiculous at this point . the stock of them won't be readily available until 2022 , its been reported . at this point , they might as well continue making games for the ps4 first and foremost , why waste even more money and resources and time for a console almost nobody has . the games are just gonna be worse because of time constraints , costs , and content even more on the ps5 anyway .
Sony knows that this E3 will be Xbox's chance to make it or break it and I think they will let Microsoft have their moment to show their cards.
On the other hand, the way I see it, Square Enix will be pretty much a PlayStation presentation.
So, combining Horizon Forbidden West State of Play and the Square Enix presentation, Sony (maybe) will end up having the first and last word in this Summer gaming presentations season.
A full blown PlayStation presentation like last year's "The Future of Play" sounds overkill, which is not Sony's style nowadays. So I will be very surprised if something like that happens in June.
I guess this is one of the issues with Sony not being at E3 and they have there own personal event. Being there own personal event they can pick and choose when they want it to be. If they want there event weeks or even months after E3 then they can do. At least when they used to attend E3 you knew when there event was going to be.
I like the ‘let the games do the talking’ approach. I still feel like a piece of the communication puzzle is missing but heck if I know what it is.
They will. It’s a big media event and they need something to show. It’s not going to be big but they can’t lose the spotlight.
At the very least, I expect PlayStation to announce a date for when their new State of Play, or whatever they're calling it, will take place in June. Even if it doesn't take place that month (probably early July).
I doubt they will do something huge but I am expecting a State of Play for God of War next month
I was expecting a future of gaming-esque showcase, but with the reveal of the State of Play today, i'd be surprised if we get both.
I do think we need more information fleshing out the second half of the year as we dont know much past deathloop in September (with presumably Horizon Forbidden West coming in October).
Hopefully Sony have something in mind for the coming weeks
I think it’d be a good idea to do something in June for Sony, simply because of all the gaming hype that surrounds E3. Honestly, I think things like E3 are MORE relevant now for the social media publicity.
I don’t think we’ll have that kind of decadent press conference with a GOW orchestra and a TLOUII cabin for a very long time, but a digital event is essentially the same thing for a majority of the fans and I don’t see why Sony would be silent through the peak of the gaming press season unless they really had nothing to show.
Plus, the industry component of E3 needs to be replaced with something - a lot of buying and selling goes on in meetings, and it’s going to be hard to keep the lid on stuff with tons of digital assets flying around anyway- may as well show product on your own terms if you can.
Sony is in great shape. I love the shorter time between show and release. Too much hype is leading to rushed games that are broken at release. I just want the Dragon Quest show to announce the first three games in the series on PS4/PS5 with trophies, out in June. That is all.
What I would like to see Sony do is reintroduce the PlayStation experience (PSX). In addition to the December show they had a few times also have one in June. Both shows would be fan focused with game play kiosks and have the BIG game reveals at these with smaller State of Play throughout the year for indie and smaller games. Sony don’t need E3. E3 needs Sony.
@Jmck87 There might not be enough PS5s out there to make that a reality until some point in 2023, though. I doubt that they'll mostly sit on their hands for three years until they feel pressed to sell systems that are sitting in stores.
@meistergeister
PSX in June or September would be great. But I think they would need to get away from the 'conference' style and show bits and trailers in between devs discussion and hands on demos to force the press to cover it all and not make it a one hour stream like TV entertainment show. Like a 2 or 3 days long event. To summarise, focus on real news and not be a smoke and mirrors advertising contest.
I don't think they will do one in June, I have a feeling they will let all the 3rd party developers show off all their games that are coming, with quite a few being PlayStation exclusives(Square Enix). And with R&C releasing around E3 time and hopefully with amazing reviews, that keeps Sony in the spotlight. Then have a big showcase in July when they'll know how big they need to go to combat whatever MS showed.
@LiamCroft Any idea why tomorrow, Thursday 27th May, is suddenly the hottest ticket in town?
I'm probably missing something too. Seems super weird to all be potentially cannibalising each other
@LiamCroft Sorry Liam one other question.
Do we know if this will a higher resolution that the last few livestreams? which have been 1080p and a low bitrate.
If so I might wait the 15 minutes for the inevitable 4K version on YouTube.
Yeah.. I mean it’s mainly due to expenses and how the industry is changing I am all for the thrill of presentations they just bring good vibes, reminds me of times i’d sit down late with snacks for years excited to see what’s next it really made me feel a part of a larger community. The tradition to have them should never die to be honest I love the aspect of conferences I do wish to see more and they stick around in my opinion...
@itsfoz you just said they dont need to release games, holy *****.
I know a lot of the chatter about Playstation's doom has quieted in recent weeks, but I still feel like they're missing something. The games will speak for themselves and we know they produce quality stuff. However, they still lack personality at the moment and in the long run I think this will damage them as people become less invested in their ecosystem.
To tie this back to the topic at hand, Sony has been known to pull out conferences that are better than we could have dreamt with great personalities to pepper between the announcements. Now we get State of Play which even when showcasing bigger games has felt lackluster. Bring back the energy!
@themightyant It just seems like everyone is rushing to get their pre-E3 announcements done in time, not sure why they've all decided to do it on one day though!
I'm afraid I don't know the answer to your second question.
Going to have to heartily disagree with you Sammy. There is not a snowball's chance in hell Sony is not going to have a future of gaming type event. It has been a long time since the last one and to keep increased excitement for Ps5 they've got to do one. I think it will be early July and they are going to adjust it based on what is shown at E3 and Keighley's show. I will be pretty pissed if they don't. You need to give your loyal fans something.
@LiamCroft I'm with you on this Liam. No chance Sony isn't going to have a show. They need to keep the excitement around Ps5 going!
@2cents I totally disagree with your assessment. They are not going anywhere. People love these shows.
@LiamCroft No worries, much appreciated as ever.
I am on team @LiamCroft .. Sony is absolutely going to do something in June to keep the ps5 hype train moving.
Between increased game prices and lack of future announcements, Sony needs to show something cause I couldn't be less excited for PS5 right now, and I've had mine since launch.
They’ll drop 30 seconds of Ragnarok on YouTube. In the middle of Xbox’s presentation slot. Thunder stolen (playable Thor unconfirmed).
Seriously though, I’d expect them to let third party do the talking during E3 week and then drop a big State of Play in July outlining the following 12-18 months.
Bottom line, to show nothing just says to the world you have nothing. I can't see them not doing something this year, but there was no way they were going to compete with Xbox/Bethesda and Nintendo with the Switch Pro at E3, they would have walked away the losers and will want to keep their distance from that event.
@nessisonett bit late response but...TRUUE
