Sony has announced the next State of Play livestream will take place this coming Thursday, and will focus entirely on Horizon Forbidden West. During a 20 minute segment, roughly 14 minutes of the show will be dedicated to gameplay for Aloy's next adventure on PlayStation 5 and PS4. The event will start at 10pm BST / 2pm PST.
A PlayStation Blog post reads: "This reveal has been a true team effort and we’re very excited to show you what we have in store. Whether you’ve been with us and Aloy since Horizon Zero Dawn or are only just getting to know this incredible world, we want to share this huge milestone with you and cannot wait to see your favorite moments and reactions."
Five hours before the digital showcase gets underway, a special pre-show will count down to the event. All of the gameplay we see on Thursday will have been captured directly from a PS5. Are you excited? Get hyped in the comments below.

Finally, can't wait
The next few weeks will be awesome
Hyyyyyyype!
Seriously, seeing how they've done this for Ratchet only a few months before release, this is almost a confirmation that it releases this year.
Noice! Cannot wait for this game
And just like that I have moved on from the disappointment of Biomutant.
HYYYYPE! Enjoyed HZD so looking forward to seeing what is in store next.
Nicee, can't wait for this game 😃
I hope the first one get ps5 60 fps patch though.
Oh yes. Oh very very yes.
Also, curious what the 5 hours of pre-show countdown might contain. That's pretty long
The past few State of Play game specific presentations have been around 2 months before launch. Is it perhaps launching in July?
As awesome as this news is, I was kinda hoping Sony would do a big extensive SoP around E3 time. Maybe that's off the table now.
LETS GOOOOOOOOO! So so hyped for this game
LET'S GO!
@AdamNovice Don't have any insider information, but I'm not really expecting anything like that. I think the era of "June press conferences" is quickly coming to an end, to be honest.
Sony plays by its own rules now. (Still possible they do something next month, though, I suppose!)
@AdamNovice Fingers crossed, but you may be right. I get the feeling Sony are liking these State of Plays 2 or 3 months before the game drops rather than do one big show. Particularly as they have attracted a lot of criticism for announcing games too early (bet they wish they never attatched a date to GOW Ragnorak)
I wonder if this means a September/October release is on the cards as the big Xmas/holiday game
I hope we get a release date on the sop. I’m ready to preorder without seeing any gameplay
Finally. Looking forward to this one
@AdamNovice @munstre It could mean that. But also I don't think they'd dedicate 20 minutes to a single game in a show like that, so maybe it's just means Horizon is coming soon-ish
F*ck yes I’m so hype.
@somnambulance I already have it pre ordered
Very excited but still have a PS4 only so hoping the game is delayed until more people can get hold of a PS5.
Playing this game on a base PS4 will be an awful experience.
😒
Excellent news!!
@Grumblevolcano Ghost Of Tsushima SoP was indeed mid-May last year. July seems early for a game that doesn't have a release date yet though, but who knows.
Hopefully we get a firm release date to go with the footage, one of the few games I've got my eye on right now.
If Nintendo is planning to drop a new Switch and the sequel to BotW this holiday season, I can see Sony moving release dates up so as not to compete against what will surely be the dominating force in video games around Christmas.
Can’t wait. Not long to go. Hope we get a 2021 release date.
Love this sort of shadow drop. No leaks about it yet either. Hype! Sony continuing on a roll
Can't wait for this. Will be playing on PS4 Pro unless I get my hands on a PS5 before then.
Miles Morales ran great on it, so I'm hoping this will be the same!
Given that this State of Play is a one game affair I'm confident there will be another, broader showcase dropping in and around the E3 period.
Looking forward to it BUT the game development is held back by the PS4 old hardware so not expecting too much from this sequel.
If it's built from the ground up for PS5 then it would be truly awesome!
Recently SoP gameplay reveals have been quite close to launch...
Maybe an August/September release date revealed and pre-order now for the super digital deluxe edition announcement?
The release date must be sooner than we expect if they are showing off the game just a couple of weeks before another huge PS5 exclusive comes out (Ratchet and Clank).
@Total_Weirdo It may not be Ratchet & Clank levels of visuals, being both cross-gen and an open world game but Miles Morales was that too and it was still pretty awesome.
Finally. I'm not going to watch it, but I'm glad they're in a position to show it off.
Fingers crossed for 2021, but my heart says next year 😳
Hope I’m wrong 👊🏼
@The_New_Butler that was just some fanboy nonsense. Horizon's combat and visuals were far superior!! I enjoyed it in different ways. Botw ushered in something amazing, but it's easy to appreciate both.
Very excited but hope it doesn’t keep Sony from showing more games this summer. I don’t really need to see more of this so I would prefer a SoP on multiple games.
@Voltan The ones that came to mind for me were Returnal SoP was in February with launch in April and Ratchet & Clank SoP was in April with launch in June. With it having happened before then like you say with GoT, maybe there's a more general pattern.
I love that they announce it very close to the event itself. The waiting ain't that bad this way.
Can't wait for it.
@Voltan Yes it will still be great in these awesome developers hands. It's just things like level design for example will be restricted due to PS4 hardware limitations instead of having greater scope if built just for PS5 hardware. Still looking forward to it though
Ratchet and Clank and this game HZDFW
we’re the two I wanted this year 2021.
Looks like it gonna happen.
Cool. I'm sure it'll only be PS5 footage at the event, but I'd love it if they addressed the PS4 version as well, in some way. Really curious how it'll run on last-gen tech.
@The_New_Butler That comparison has always been forced. Remove the open world aspect and the fact that both have robots, and the two games are almost nothing alike.
Perfect timing, one of my off days this week.
Happy as this almost guarantees a 2021 release. Can't imagine they would do this if the game wasn't close to ready for release.
Now if they can just get those PS5 made. May have to play this on my PS4 Slim. On the bright side, HZD was the first game I put on to check out HDR on my new 4k tv, and it looked really good. I'm sure this will look better on PS5, but it's probably built ground up for PS4. First game looked great, and multiplat Shadow of the Tomb Raider showed PS4 can handle some really nice underwater swimming and fighting scenes.
Birthday in July, perfect gift this. 😁
Literally been finishing up the first game on my PS5 over the last few days (been in my backlog too long!) so this is great timing!
nice! hope we get to ride a frigging stormbird this time around, or one of those pterodactyl robots we saw in the first trailer... that'd be so cool, lol
Liked the original, but it did have its flaws. Hoping this one will set a new standard for the Horizon IP!
Also, please let me fly a storm bird!
@hugoadan You literally took the words out of my mouth lol
Nice one! Looking forward to this. I hope the ssd helps speed up the dialogue though. That was a ball ache.
I truly hope I’m not correct but I expect the PS4 to have hindered what this game could have been on the PS5. There are so many possible improvements beyond higher resolution/higher frames yet too many are ignorant to realize this, resolution and frames are all you hear about.
Literally can't wait to get a proper look at this sequel!
This, along with Spiderman MM and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart are THE big reasons I got a PS5 at launch, so saying I'm hyped right now is an understatement!
I wonder if this means we'll get multiple State of Plays over the E3 period to try keep the spotlight on Sony and give each game a proper showing?
Arghhhhhhhhhhhh
@GoodGame lucky! I’m digital, so I’ve got to wait.
HZD was one of the most polished open world games I've had the pleasure to play. As far as the story goes, it had some fantastic setup and world building, but the plot itself was a little slow, and much of the voice acting was flat. I love the world and Aloy is a great protag, so I'm really looking forward to a follow-up.
This is the best indication yet that HZD will launch this year. Let’s keep our fingers crossed
Sony have definitely settled on this 10pm Thursday slot for SOPs which unfortunately is just when I start work. Oh well my first watch will have to be on my phone on my break.
This bodes well for a release sometime in the next few months. Can’t wait.
This game, along with Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart, were the 2 biggest reasons why I decided I wanted a PS5. So excited!
@JapaneseSonic I think some of it was because most of the dialogue in the game was presented with 2 characters standing still opposite of each other and with the same camera angle - or at least that's how I remembered it.
I wonder if they'll admit to copying Nintendo's homework. If they can implement some kind of physics system and the ability to climb everything similarly to BotW it could be something special. It would take the series from a solid 8 into the 10s for me. People who don't see the difference between the two games and their systems simply weren't creative enough with what was on offer in BotW.
I sincerely hope being cross-gen hasn't downgraded the game too much.
On the other hand, I was fairly impressed with how the PS4 version of Miles Morales ran so well. It wasn't 60fps and didn't have ray tracing, but I thought it ran so much smoother than the first game, and load times were significantly cut down, even if they weren't instant.
Well this is a nice surprise, can't wait to see the reveal.
Hope the launch isn't far behind.
N.i.c.e. im ready for this.its gonna look amazing.cant wait.word up son
Cool, this should be fun.
It'll probably play fine on the base PS4, it'll be shiner and smoother on the Pro and it'll be shinier and smoother still on the PS5 - what's not to like?
PS4 still has a decent amount of grunt for a 7 year old console, the Pro even more so.
@OmegaStriver yes, I'm really dissapointed for this game having to be developed for PS4. Almost for sure it basically rules out any major gameplay improvements or mechanics, etc.
@Grumblevolcano i think it release between September to November
Well well well....Christmas came early.
Really looking forward to seeing how the game looks and what they might have added to the gameplay. Loved the first one. I'm wondering if the PS5 version might have extra assets on screen like Kena having a 100 of those furry little creatures on screen compared to the 20 on ps4. I'm hoping it's not just better frame rate and resolution. Hyped anyway.
@rjejr. N.i.c.e. you a cancer .your sign.just like myself.cool .you can drink some wilkins ☕ coffee. On your birthday 🎂 haha.word up son
@MattSilverado I’d be shocked if Sony allowed any moderate differences let alone major differences.
Yet, this is what people cried about a year or so ago saying they didn’t want to be left behind and that Sony shouldn’t abandon the PS4. I was ready to move on before the PS5 even launched.
Edit: Just look at that Sanders comment up above this one.
Cool, cool, cool, thoroughly enjoyed HZD... this 'could' be one of the rare games that would cause me to rain-check the backlog and play at release.
Nice! Sony is just on fire. Lets feed that hype train. Day 1 just like R&C.
I moved on to PS5 - but I do not need Sony to block the PS4 community from playing a game to justify my purchase. People play the games on the hardware they got - just like on PC.
Ghost of Tsushima was beautiful on PS4, this will also be stunning. Just shows what a great Job Sony did back in 2013 with the PS4.
@Ralizah One is about exploration and the other one was about combat gameplay; the focus is so different. Always felt dumb when people said "Zelda is the better game, because it has more interesting exploration" or the other way around.
But it's not strange people compared them, because they were the most obvious mainstream picks for Game of the Year in that year.
Ah, Sony's strategy has become clear. Whenever a game's launching, point us at the next thing to be excited for. I actually like that a lot better than just showing us everything constantly (without any actual news) like they did previous gen.
Very cool I liked the original well enough. Curious to see how this one looks. Hopefully the human combat is much more interesting than the original!
This I am very excited for. In some ways I hope they haven't wandered too far away from what made the first one great, but I also hope that they've thrown a few surprises in there just to keep it fresh.
@OmegaStriver well, yes. Sad. The PS4 was capable of outstanding games, miracles we could say, but of course it's time to move on. Maybe Guerilla couldn't target PS5 specs since the beginning of the dev process so they choose to go for a mixed path... Anyway this first gen PS5 games are not representative of the real leap we will see a couple of years down the road. I guess we will need to wait for a Naughty Dog game to see what the PS5 is capable of (ok, Ratchet and clank is a little showcase but I think still far off the real possibilities).
I'm really, really loving the focus on water gameplay they seem to be hinting at so far. Also hoping they might introduce a 60FPS PS5 patch at the same time...maybe?
Release date perhaps?
Mixed feelings.
Obviously very much looking forward to this game, but getting a PS5 has been nigh impossible since launch for a majority of people. After this, (even if we don't get a release date) many of the "there are no games on it yet" people will jump into the race and snagging one will be even less possible.
Well I guess will see if this looks like the first REAL PS5 game, and not just a shiner version of a PS4 game. Seeing as its coming to PS4 as well, I'm not expecting it to look or play more than a few notches better than Zero Dawn.
Yes! Finally a game presentation worth watching on the big screen again instead of on the phone!
@playstation1995 At my age I need to drink Wilkins coffee all day, every day. Cheers. ☕
I still have the first one to play on my PS5. I hope they also announce a 60 fps update as I am waiting for that.
I think this State of Play is also Guerrilla's last chance to announce a HZD 60fps patch for PS5. If it doesn't happen I think we can safely rule it out of ever happening. Would be an embarrassment for Guerrilla after seeing the other 1st parties capably putting out patches for their games.
ooooooh. Well this is exciting
Usually I just wait for a catch up but might actually tune in for this one!
One of my most favourite games ever ,cant wait for this
This State of Play will definitely infom my decision as to whether I sell my PS5 or lug it half way around the world with me in a few months.
@MattSilverado In the past, I would have been fine with the wait and see improvements for games but I hate cross-gen so much now due to it takes forever for games to release in general. If they have to focus on cross-gen it may take another 5 or so years before we actually see any big improvements.
@Arugula Controversial and also incorrect.
You are the resident Eeyore of PushSquare though with nary a good word to say about anything gaming related.
I will watch this a bit later when the 4K footage goes up on YouTube. Whenever I've watched these things 'live', the picture quality has always been a bit rubbish.
@Voltan probably a timer
@Arugula whatever happens, they’ll still attack Sony
Boom! I shall be sat in my comfy chair, rubbing my corderoy trousers as I watch this!
I hope it runs great on the base PS4. If it's a step down from HZD that would be disappointing.
I would've liked them to show the first 5 mins of the ps4 version and gauge reaction then go..... Oh sorry we meant to show you this.
Mic drop.
@Col_McCafferty why will it? The original was superb on the base machine.
I really wish all these games were PS5 exclusives!!
Hypeeeed for thursday!
Can't wait Saying that I would be even more excited tho if it was a PS5 only game :-/ Oh well. We believe in (past) generations (to)...
So hyped. Who needs E3 lol. I wasn't expecting gameplay now, gives me hope a 2021 release is still possible.
HYPE TIME! Hopefully we get a surprise reveal of Zero Dawn being remastered on PS5.
@The_New_Butler
I love both equally for different reasons.
I think BOTW has a better world and better world building.
HZD has the best combat loop of any open world game ever released.
Two titans in Insomniac and Guerrilla going at it this year. I hope this State of Play reveals an exact release date. Let’s go!! Horizon II is going to blow people’s minds with how it looks.
What’s up with the 5-hour countdown leading up to this State of Play though? The blog calls it, “a uniqely crafted countdown towards the main State of Play”.
Is this some kind of visualizer to keep us entertained for 5 hours? Possibly some smaller anouncements? Interesting stuff.
I just wish Aloy has a house this time round or can rent rooms, that's all I'm asking. I mean openworlds without beds take away massively from realism and immersion.
It would need two things for me to buy it:
1. Human combat which either isn’t shockingly bad, or just outright removed.
2. Side-quests on par with Frozen Wilds rather than the base game.
Extended gameplay look is always good
Horizon Zero Dawn was probably my favorite Sony first party exclusive from the PS4’s library, so Horizon Forbidden West is definitely one of my most anticipated games for PS5. I think this State of Play will probably be a short but sweet taste of Horizon Forbidden West, and I’m personally not expecting any major surprises or announcements other than any related to Horizon Forbidden West. But you never know; crazier things have happened.
Here's hoping we get a release date and it's a 2021 one!
Horizon Zero Dawn was one of the reason I bought a PS4. I kinda wish Horizon II would be a PS5 only game... But the Spider-man Miles Morales was released on PS4 as well and still looked amazing on PS5 so I guess it's okay for me.
Still would love to have a next gen patch for HZD. At least a frame rate unlock.
Hi there fellow gamers.
And the gaming chistmas news begins.
14 minutes of gameplay form the sequel of one of my GOTYs?
YES, PLEASE!
Sony is on a roll. First RC State of Play and now HFW.
Your doing well Sony. Keep on bringing the good stuff.
27 of May is becoming a big day for games. Kinda interesting.
Cheers, stay safe people and happy gaming to us all
This is really exciting. HZD’s world has more potential than most. If Guerrilla can make exploring the obscenely beautiful environments more rewarding then this could be a stone cold classic.
Held back by PS4.
