As promised, PlayStation dropped over 15 minutes of new Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart gameplay in its latest State of Play broadcast. To be frank, the upcoming PS5 exclusive looks utterly ridiculous. The visual fidelity on display here is truly absurd at times, to the point where we almost can't believe what we're looking at.
The most insane part, though? It's got to be those load times — or lack thereof. It's been highlighted before, but Rift Apart makes full use of the PS5's lightning fast SSD. The game can load totally different environments almost instantly, allowing Ratchet — or new character Rivet — to leap through different dimensions in seamless fashion. It's, as editor Sammy Barker would say, "bonkers".
There's a lot to glean from this lengthy gameplay demonstration as well. Ratchet is now more mobile than ever before, and the aforementioned rifts let you navigate battlefields at breakneck speed. Not only does it look amazing, Rift Apart appears to be a blast to play.
How hyped are you for Ratchet & Clank's PS5 debut? Wonder how Insomniac Games does it in the comments section below.

Highly stylized, big-budget games like this are the best visual showcases for the power of the hardware, IMO. This impresses me way more than ND's painstaking photorealism.
I dunno if anyone missed it since I don’t see any articles on any website but it releases on june 11th. Unless that was already known and I missed it before.
It looks amazing. Familiar but completely different at the same time. Voice acting sounds a little strange but maybe because I’ve been replaying the remake of the first game this week.
I wonder if there’s a alternate Clank to Ratchet’s Rivet???
This will be the first game I play when I get a PS5. When...
Oh, Is that it? I thought they were showing other stuff as well as R&C?
Yep that's the game that makes me want a PS5, the photomode looks great as well
Zhuge on Twitter said it best: this looks like a PS6 game. Absolutely wild.
Insomniac are unrivaled. DAY ONE.
This is really convincing me to stop waiting for a slim and just (try) and buy a PS5. Gameplay looks fun as ever (with some interesting platforming), visually beautiful, and the story seems like it will be pretty interesting.
One of the best looking games i ever seen.imagine sly cooper with those graphics 😳.word up son
Can’t wait day one, one of my favourite PS franchises, played them all from the very beginning. Yes I’m old 😂
The only shame is, there are probably at 10 million more gamers that want to play this.
Dam chip and console shortages.
This games look absolutely amazing and can't wait to play it. They have managed to keep the game familiar to the series but managed to change it up in some much needed ways. Would like to see some gameplay differences between ratchet and rivet but if we don't get any not to bothered.
Shocking how good it looks. We're half a year into the generation and getting things like this bodes well for the next several years! Can't wait to play this!!
@playstation1995 we need a new Sly game. Thieves In Time was brilliant.
@ThroughTheIris56
Keep trying to get one, I managed it in the end
It’s not easy and also painful when you get one in your basket and the site crashes, but it can be done, I did, digital PS5.
My son got a disc PS5 as well.
In UK by the way.
For me, this is the first "must have" game of the new gen!
@fR_eeBritney. Oh yeah thieves in time was amazing.sanzaru game did a really good job.im surprise sony did not buy those guys.at least give me a sly cooper collection.word up son
Will definitely pick this up (and Returnal, too, from what I'm seeing) - just not so sure I'll pick it up at $70 US. I might wait for a sale, to exert some resistance to increasing prices.
Though with school out in June, my kids just might chip in to buy it themselves to go crazy during the day while I'm working.
Looks stunning. Cant wait to see it live on a 4KTV. Now we next gen for sure.
Already have an Anime I can control... now a Pixar film. Tech finally catching up to the stuff I wanted as a kid 😀
@playstation1995 Or Jak And Daxter. That City Ratchet Was Walking Through Reminded Me Of Haven City From Jak 2
@fR_eeBritney The other stuff was basically ads for Subnautica DLC/PS5 upgrade and Among Us coming to PS
@darkswabber This has been known for quite some time now
I'll never financially recover from this week!
This looks, pardon my language, ***** AMAZING. Good lord. Shiiiiiiiet.
June 11e cannot arrive soon enough!
God this looks gorgeous on so many levels. Definitely one to platinum!
This will look amazing on my Samsung 65 inch QLED TV, I know most rave about OLED, but HDR and the pop in colour on a QLED is amazing to see, due to the 2000nits of brightness compared to OLED 700nits.
Happy to be an early PS5 adopter now with Returnal and this within 6 weeks of each other.
The future looks amazing for PlayStation
Wow. Just wow. Insomniac just knock it out of the park yet again. Sony made such a shrewd investment acquiring that developer. Honestly, the confidence and skill they demonstrate with each new project is breathtaking
@fR_eeBritney
They showed Subnautica: Below Zero and the PS4/5 port of Among Us before the R&C gameplay.
Resistance against Dr Nefarious mentioned multiple times.....Resistance 4 confirmed!!!
Beautiful looking game, Insomniac rules! Can't wait for it to go on sale...
@Dezzy70 I'm actually waiting for a slim to come out. I think it's generally better to wait a while after consoles launch so bugs can fixed. Plus, PS5 is a big boi, I'm scared of how much space it will take up in my fairly compact room.
Looks really good. This series used to be my jam back on PS2 but I didn’t pay much attention to on PS3 and PS4. Time I got back into this.
Wow, looks really good and a must play on PS5.
I only bought the last one on the strength of the original trailer for Rift Apart. I'm glad I did as I thoroughly enjoyed it, a welcome change of pace and tone from both The Last of Us Part II and Death Stranding which I were playing at the same time.
This new one looks even more impressive. Excellent visuals, thrilling gameplay and adorable lead characters. I bet the story is a cracker as well!
Just a shame I won't have a PS5 by the time it releases. It will be worth waiting for though that's for sure.
@Rob_230
Insomniac was an excellent acquisition for Sony. Just look at their output since releasing Sunset Overdrive in 2014...Ratchet & Clank, Spider-man, Miles Morales, and now this. That's five quality games in seven years by one studio.
That gameplay footage justified my pre-order. Hyped as heck for this!
@lacerz Absolutely. And they have been nigh on indespensible since the launch of the PS5. Miles Morales, Spiderman Remastered, the 60 fps patch for Ratchet remake and now Rift Apart? The productivity is astounding in only 6 months.
I anticipate they will be quiet for a while now until Spiderman 2 is gearing up for release, but i wouldn't be surprised to see them showing up at the launch of PSVR 2 given their history developing for Oculus.
And of course i always live in hope of a remastered Resistance trilogy!
@ThroughTheIris56. Nah im waiting for a ps5 pro to come out.word up son
@Areus definitely i agree.imagine a new jak and daxter and ratchet and clank on ps5.word up son
@playstation1995 Or that. Either way, there's no reason to panic buy, and get something just because it's the cool new thing.
@darkswabber It has been mentioned once or twice: https://www.pushsquare.com/games/ps5/ratchet_and_clank_rift_apart/news
This is easily set to be the best R&C game since A Crack in Time. Will likely even surpass it.
Also, there is just no way Rivet isn't going to end up stealing the show. She is utterly fantastic so far!
Some of those areas look like the city and effects that Cyberpunk 2077 was trying to accomplish. Looks great!
Insomniac at it again, their output and quality of said output is unmatched in the gaming world. They are in my opinion Sony's MVP studio.
Just watched the state of play again in 4K.
Could this be the most beautiful game ever made? On console at least. It looks absolutely phenomenal!
The only question I have is on the difficulty level of R&C games?
I’ve never played one previously having always had x box.
Do they pose much of a challenge at all as it seems to me like all enemies are blown away pretty easily?
Can anyone give me the heads up please?
I just don't see how the gameplay loop has lasting appeal. You are literally just running around shooting enemies that appear to be almost like filler. Just running at you to get killed. The AI is very unimpressive in these videos. It may look amazing but Its platformer aspects are pretty much non existent. This game would need to have a large mix of puzzling, and exploration to break up the monotony of constantly shooting mindless targets.
@Hurblyburbly thats my concern to it looks so damn easy.
@KundaliniRising333
To be fair they did say the footage is from the beginning of the game so it could just be easy at the start. Also R&C games have never really been extremely hard. (Though they got their moments!)
But anyway the game looks absolutely stunning! Now if we get a Resistance 4 with this kind of love and attention...
@KundaliniRising333 Well lucky for you Returnal exist and just came out if you want something more challenging, looks like we are getting games for everyone.
@KundaliniRising333
So I just did some research on the previous game and it had an easy, normal and hard mode so it looks like maybe the footage in the state of play was played on easy or normal mode.
Good news.
@fR_eeBritney I would love to see a human sized Clank with a baby sized Lombax lol
Hmmm a €70 game that looks plays and is as complete as this or a €60 game that incomplete and does not even come close to how this looks and plays. 🤪
Take my €10 extra.
@Hurblyburbly nice thanks for the info
@Juanalf lol true
@Ralizah whats ND?
@ThroughTheIris56 slim?? Slim is at least 2-3yrs away. Who wants to wait that long if you have money.
@djape Naughty Dog
@Ralizah oh alright. thanks
Definitely the best ever launch year for a PlayStation console, if first party output is the main criterion as otherwise the PS2 is still arguably a strong contender.
@ThroughTheIris56
Now we have a few updates the system etc I have no issues and the little extras added are great and everything works really smooth now and fast system wise.
Yes until you actually hold the PS5 you don’t realise what a size the thing is.
I have a big front room and very good AV set up and it still looks big.
I disagree with a few comments here. I think it looks like a fresh new take on the series with a lot of interest renewed thanks to the power of PS5.
Also Rivet is a great character. I just was hoping for some couch co-op to have fun in family but can't have everything.
Edit
I mean the series formula was getting a bit stale but the PS5 gives it a new life IMO
Given how incredible this looked, does anyone know if it was running at 30 fps or 60 fps?
Just goes to show how much CDPR dumbed down to get Cyberpunk 2077 crude enough for old-gen consoles, stadia and X-Box. Damn, just think what Night City would have been like if Cyberpunk 2077 was built as a PS5 exclusive.
@djape I'm happy to wait for a better product, plus there will be a better range of accessories/games, and more likely to be cheaper. Lots of other stuff to play in the mean time,
Youtube only showed me 540p. I dont think ps5 does that..
I'm really hyped for this game, man the graphics are insane, this is what you get if developers make games only for next-gen 😃
@Ralizah Yeah, at some point photorealism graphics will age badly, why stylized graphics usually can stand the test of time. For example, mario sunshine and galaxy still looks good even decades later.
@wiiware That used to be true, but I think games are at the point now where something like TLOU Part II will still look good in a few generations.
I'm just not inherently wowed by photorealism in games. I can look out my window and see the real thing, so watching developers pour millions of dollars and countless manhours into creating a convincing facsimile of real life always struck me as a bit of a waste. I like gaming because it can show me visions impossible in the real world, and Ratchet and Clank leans into that with an incredibly beautiful cartoon artstyle.
@Ralizah I think characters wise that's true, but more can be done on the games environment, my jaw drop the first time I see the forest of ghost of tsushima, with all the swaying wind across the beautiful tree and flower landscape. After seeing ratchet & clank, I can't wait for others ps5 exclusives games, realistic or stylized 😃
@wiiware Fair point, although I'd argue that GoT's evocative landscapes fall more into the range of stylized realism. The humans models look good, but there clearly wasn't a slavish attempt to emulate real life, and more attention seems to have been paid on creating gorgeous, almost dreamlike environmental visuals.
I'd never mistake a still shot from that game for something real, though. I don't think, even on Tsushima Island, you'd be able to go outside and experience something identical looking to the environments in that game.
Strong environmental art direction really can make a game, visually. Despite it not being a technical stunner these days, The Witcher 3's fantastic visual design and weather effects still frequently wowed me.
@Ralizah I'm more impressed by ghost forest graphics compared to tlou2 forest graphics. Tech wise maybe tlou2 is greater than ghost, but yeah, the stylized forest on ghost is really really good. Witcher 3 graphics is good too, which is amazing considering the game launched in 2015.
Gameplay trailer was beautiful, I almost didn't watch to avoid spoilers. I am making myself go media silent on Rift Apart from now on though, want to go into the game as fresh as possible.
