Sonic the Hedgehog's movie debut, with its redesigned Blue Blur, ended up being a big hit for Paramount Pictures in those pre-pandemic days. Amusingly, where we live, buses were plastered with advertisements for the SEGA mascot prior to coronavirus, and they remained in place for months and months and months during lockdown. We still see one occasionally!
Anyway, such was the success of the film that a sequel has been announced. As is par for the course in the movie industry, it’s targeting an 8th April, 2022 theatrical run – but no further details have been announced. Judging by the logo, there’ll be a big emphasis on Tails, which is similar to the original SEGA Genesis titles, with the second obviously introducing Sonic’s foxy friend.
“Groundbreaking. Thought provoking. Extremely obvious. Presenting the official title of the Sonic Movie sequel: Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” reads the trailer blurb. We also hear the Emerald Hill Zone music, which is pretty cool. However, as mentioned previously, there’s no word on whether Jim Carrey will reprise his role as Dr Eggman just yet. Watch this space.

I'm more excited for the sequel than the first one considering it comes out on the week i turn 21 next year! Can 2022 get any faster?
I was very pleasantly surprised by the first one. I’m looking forward to this.
Bets that when the trailer comes out, Tails is an actual Arctic fox and the movie gets delayed to redesign him to look like the game character.
I've no doubt the core cast will all be back. From what I understand, Jim Carrey loved playing Robotnik.
I need to watch the first, still!
And there's a music track that will 100% never show up in the film outside the end credits
Sonic 2 will probably take place in like New Orleans or something because Hollywood execs and creatives think that there's nothing more interesting than bringing fantastical characters from pre-existing IPs to the dull human world with human side characters played by big name celebrities
Yeah just take this random town in Minnesota or something and name it "Green Hills". It's basically the same thing
Use the unused Juice Wrld song for the movie’s theme song please
@Turismo4GT we've already seen tails at the end of the first movie...
@TheFrenchiestFry I completely understand your point but in this particular instance I felt Green Hills was more of a wink wink nod than anything else, especially when the opening of the film was as fantasy as it comes, and true to the games.
@Jimmer-jammer Yeah but like that's just it
The opening is like the only thing that actually screamed "Sonic the Hedgehog" to me
The rest of the film was basically like the movie Hop mixed with Smurfs and happened to be based on a video game. James Marsden even plays the same exact character he did in Hop
Whenever I hear people say this is like the best video game movie ever made I personally just get puzzled because yeah it's a fine kids film but it has barely anything to do with being a video game-based movie since it only uses the surface level elements of said game. At least Detective Pikachu being in a world where humans and Pokemon co-existed was actually faithful to the game's exact setting
@TheFrenchiestFry Too bad literally everything else about Detective Pikachu was messy, down to the acting and ESPECIALLY the third act. What's the point of being 'faithful' to your source material if the movie surrounding it just isn't coherent?
"Look, guys! Yet ANOTHER second-act breakup! The main villain is a furry! That definitely has to do with the core plot and is definitely not a shoehorned concept to tie into Tim's dad being Pikachu!"
It puzzles me how people raise Det. Pikachu to this high-level standard just because the Pokemon looked cool and had vibrant fur.
@TheFrenchiestFry I had fun with the movie dont understand the issues.
@TheFrenchiestFry fair enough. I suppose having marianas trench level expectations going into it only benefited my experience but I really did enjoy it, my kids enjoyed it; it was a solid family film in a sea of mush with a surprising amount of heart. It’s not like there’s rich, profound lore to pull from. They justified well enough to me why Sonic was in our world. Perhaps the sequel will explore the other worlds a little more. Rockconnaissance!!
... fantastic.. really enjoyed the first!
The first movie surpassed my expectations and they also earned my respect after they fix the design of Sonic
The first film was great fun, especially good for Sonic fans with lots of references and easter eggs.
Very much looking forward to the sequel. Hopefully we get Knuckles, Amy or Shadow too.
Really enjoyed the first film and Carrey was a blast so i'm looking forward to this.
Didn't get around to seeing the first one yet. Might have to give it a go.
@TheFrenchiestFry To me the thing about it was that for the first time since 2009, Sonic was acting like himself.
@Would_you_kindly thanks for the spoiler 😏
Hope Tails and knuckles are in this.
Also off topic, reason buses still had posters for this and other old films, is due to Pandemic to save money, all TFL and other areas updating of posters was halted for 6 months. They are being changed now. Still got stuff branded for the first series of Noel Clarks Bulletproof on the roads.
@TheFrenchiestFry A lot of that was due to not being given enough of a budget. The earlier script drafts had a lot more Sonicy stuff that had to be trimmed down to mainly just the opening. My guess is now they know the first movie was a hit, they'll be allowed to get bolder with sequel. The fact that we're apparently getting Knuckles as well as Tails affirms this I think, it strongly suggests that a good chunk of 2 will follow up on the hanging plot thread left by the first one's opening.
@Jimmer-jammer
I thought the film was the complete opposite of what the games are: Sonic riding shotgun in a pickup truck trudging through Midwest America is not my idea of "gotta go fast". Maybe I'm just getting old! I hope the sequel jettisons all but Carrey for "real" actors and set it in actual Zones! Pleeeeaase.
@Jacko11 I'd love to see all of Sonic's friends show up! For sure Tails, and maybe Knuckles since his race/species was shown at the beginning of Movie 1.
@JB_Whiting I felt they justified it by running with the fish out of water idea. This clearly isn’t Sonic’s home. But in searching for his identity, he discovers it’s not about where you are, but who you are. I don’t know, it worked for me. However I do agree that I would like to see more zones, and with the way it ended, I think we will.
