Gorgeous story-driven strategy title 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim has sold more than 300,000 copies worldwide. That's according to publisher Atlus, following the game's Western launch on PS4 in September last year. It hit Japan long before that, back in November 2019.
We don't always get sales updates for more niche titles, so the fact that Atlus published this information suggests that the company's pleased with its performance. Still, we can't help but feel as though 13 Sentinels deserves better. We know that it was never going to be a mainstream blockbuster, but it's without a doubt one of the highest quality games released in 2020.
This is where we recommend reading our glowing 9/10 13 Sentinels review, and gently nudge you in the direction of the latest PlayStation Store sale, where you can nab the title at a lower price.

I'm definitely getting it eventually. It's not a must, at the moment, because of the light gameplay.
I don't enjoy visual novels on a big screen. It'd be a perfect fit for vita, but alas.
Just added to the numbers this morning dont know when i'm gonna play it though
For such a Niche, unique Game limited to one Platform those are very good numbers. Vanillaware also said the Game was profitable even with the 140k Japan Sales alone
Not heard much about this game tbh. Shame that many gems are hidden in an ocean of mediocrity. Got to be a better way for the store to advertise these kind of games.
I was hesitant about getting this due to the strategic mech gameplay. However, the vast praise this game gets, especially with regards to story, has me curious. Might be worth me giving it a try one of these days.
Ive had it in my back log since day one being a vanillaware fan.
But I was going through a switch VN at the time to start it (collar x malice maybe?)
I know the game isnt a pure VN but its one that I very much would have prefered a switch release.
I just feel it was better S.uited for the Switch
Definitely will pick it up soon, the visual novel aspect puts me off but if it has more actual gameplay than the danganronpa series then it should fine.
Its on my wishlist. Just a matter of when i get it. My backlog remains outrageous,so its difficult to justify
I would enjoy games like this if I didn’t have to read the game. I really dislike reading games. Not notes or signs but the entire game having to be read makes me skip the game.🤷♂️🤷♂️
This has got switch release written all over it. It looks interesting, but I'd much rather have it TV/handheld on switch.
It'll grab it when i get home , Have £24 left in my PS wallet from Xmas so this will do nicely, was eyeing it up when it was on sale the last time !
@Culjoseth How did you manage in the past?
I like to play Vanillaware games on portables. Was planning on getting the Vita version, but that obviously fell through, so I'm just going to wait and see if it eventually receives a Switch port, since it looks like Sony is done with handhelds.
Regardless of what happens, though, I'm always happy to hear about interesting niche games like this succeeding.
I just bought this on sale this morning. I’ll be jumping into it after I finish The Pathless.
Finished and obtained the Platinum too.Absolutely fantastic game!
Story is totally out there and bonkers but still excellent.
One of my favorite games of 2020. At first I was concerned, but after a bit it really opens up.
It also would be perfect for a handheld game. Vita is done, so hopefully it gets a Switch port at some point. I think the battle map would be better on the bigger screen anyway.
I just recently got the Platinum Trophy for this game. I really enjoyed it, a great story (even if it's a confusing one) but great. It kind of hurts to see games like this not really get given the time of day just because it's not mainstream like COD or GTA. Games like 13 Sentinels are more unique and different than most of the mainstream games. I feel games like these don't get the credit and recognition they deserve.
I’m currently playing this. I’ve put other games on hold cause I’m so into 13 Sentinels. It’s really good.
Not often I agree with games media saying you must play X, however in this case I agree 💯
One of the best of 2020.
Fantastic game CANNOT RECOMMEND IT ENOUGH. It's certainly not for everyone but if you're enthusiastic enough about games to be on this site it should be at least enjoyable!! One of the best games of 2020 for sure.
@MightyDemon82 I read with no problem then advancements in technology allowed games the ability to use voice and since then any game that uses reading rather than voice, I don’t play. Zelda is the only exception. I don’t mean games like Mario, that kind of reading is ok because it’s minimal. But games like this require extensive reading which is boring.
Been hearing good things about this recently.
It does seem like it'll be better suited on a portable device to be honest.
@Boon520 it was added to the PSN January sale this morning.
@Culjoseth
It has captions that you can read if you want, but everything has English voice acting (as well as other languages). You don't have to read the story portion, but you will need to read to understand the Sentinel loadout options before going into battle.
My first platinum trophy. Never was a big fan of visual novels. But it’s elevator pitch in the first 5mins got me hooked. While the endearing characters and beautiful art maintained my curiosity to see the story through until the end.
Perfect balance of intrigue, and memorable characters - presented in beautiful 2D.
Highly recommend!
@lacerz Then I might check this out. Everything I saw was in Japanese and reading. Thanks
It's on sale for $30 right now on PSN BUY IT
Bought it at full price on a friend’s recommendation, and was not disappointed.
Just buy it!
My game of the year last year. To understand what it is I would recommend reading a full review rather than relying on simple terms like real time RPG with slow time when issuing orders, Tower defence , sides scroller. It’s got a lot of different elements combined together in a unique way.
It has a lot of story but it’s not told in the way I would consider to be a visual novel. You’re choosing who to talk to and what to say. Rather than watching a cut out.
I'll peep at $20. Vanillaware does good work but this one doesn't do it for me.
I'm certainly intrigued as I enjoyed what I played of the beautiful Odin Sphere, and this looks interesting and similarly stunning. I think the problem I and millions of other keen Western gamers have is that it is an extremely niche type of game, so we're hesitant to spend RRP-type money on it, not least when most of our backlogs are absolutely ridiculous as it's the end of the generation.
