Update (1st December, 2020): Ubisoft's investigation into why UK gamers can't upgrade their PS4 copies of Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Watch Dogs Legion has be fruitless thus far, but in a message on its Twitter account it promised it was working to resolve the problem.
The saga rumbles on...
Update (28th November, 2020): It's been over a week since this issue surfaced, and Ubisoft's forums are still filled with disgruntled fans unable to access the free PlayStation 5 upgrades promised for PlayStation 4 games, when using physical media in European territories. A quick look on the forum shows many people having the same issue, with Sony or Ubisoft yet to offer a consistent solution. We'll check in with the French publisher and see if it has an update to share.
Update (23rd November, 2020): Ubisoft has told Eurogamer.net it’s investigating issues with PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 upgrades of its launch titles, which appear to be affecting European owners of physical Blu-ray discs. The French publisher did suggest a workaround, which you may have mixed success with. Basically, you need to insert the PS4 disc, select View Product, and then access the upgrade from there. It may work for you, though we’ve read that some people don’t see the View Product option at all. Your mileage may vary.
Original Story (22nd November, 2020): If you own a PlayStation 4 copy of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla or Watch Dogs Legion that you’re hoping to upgrade on the PlayStation 5, you may be bang out of luck because neither title is working as intended right now. This issue only appears to apply to Blu-ray owners in select European countries, but it’s no less frustrating.
So, as you may already know, both titles offer free PS4 to PS5 upgrades. While we can verify that PS Store purchases work as intended, Blu-ray owners are having trouble. What’s supposed to happen is that you insert the PS4 disc and then download the next-gen version. Instead, fans are being quoted a £59.99 fee.
Obviously, this is an error, and Ubisoft has said it’s investigating. There is a workaround that involves creating a Turkish PlayStation Network account, but we wouldn’t recommend going to those kinds of lengths for an issue that will likely be solved within the next few days. It’s a disappointing mix-up, though, of that there’s no doubt – hopefully it’s all resolved soon.
well I won't put the disc in until it's fixed then
Even once this is fixed, the management of mixed PS4/PS5 titles is a mess.
When you own the PS5 version of a game with a PS4 version available, it adds the PS4 version to your library even though you can't actually play it. I am guessing this is because the DLC is cross-gen but it seems like games you have DLC for but not the actual game shouldn't be shown in your library.
Additionally, if you bought a PS4 title with a free PS5 upgrade digitally specifying the correct version is an awkward and non-obvious process.
@evan23 Yeah, it needs to be streamlined and tidied up.
Got my PS5 yesterday, and it has tried to install the PS4 version of Miles Morales (I own the PS4 disc version, so I can share it with my son, who’s playing it on a PS4) at least twice, even though the PS5 version is already installed and working beautifully. Not sure why the console is trying to do that (taking away some of the precious SSD storage space), but kinda pretty frustrating.
Not that it matters to me, because I don't particularly care about either franchise, but I do hope that it's resolved quickly for everyone affected by this. As for other games, I pretty much only buy physical versions of games so I haven't had the issue with playing a PS4 version of a game. At least it is very easy to make sure you are playing the correct version, though it would be nice if Sony adds a setting to automatically play the PS5 version, or only download the PS5 version of cross gen games.
This whole upgrade system is obviously a rushed job. It's so messy.
Ubisoft needs to get their act together. These 2 games have problems on XBOX as well. The auto save option randomly disappears and with it goes the manual save option.
I believe this occurs only with PS4 physical discs. The reason behind this is that the PS5 starts automatically installing the PS4 version from disc as soon as you insert the disc into your console, regardless if you have the PS5 version installed. The only workaround I've heard of is to delete the PS4 version when the disc is not in the console. Then go to the game you want to play. Selecte more options (the 3 dots), and choose to start the PS5 version. Then insert the disc. If I'm correct this way the PS5 version will start without the console trying to automatically instal the PS4 version.
As I posted in another thread:
I have a PS5 console and the PS4 disc version of Valhalla.... well a few days ago people were getting the free PS5 upgrade, not anymore!
It is bugged out and I have been playing the PS4 version on a PS5.
On Reddit it says the only way to fix this is sign up with a Turkish account, then you can upgrade... what a PITA
Will test and report back... in the UK by the way.
The above worked for me, but only by creating a Turkish account 🤔
Tried both UK and USA accounts and a clean install, no go.
@ThaBEN I had to do this with Fallout 4 which is very fussy over save files, when I put my PS4 disc in it downloaded a later version of the game which my save files aren't compatible with (they don't work with the ps plus version either). When pressing the menu button I found two versions, so switched it and deleted the one it installed and now my saves work fine. I don't know how Bethesda messed this one up though as my saves are compatible with all the dlc and updates, just not later released versions of the base game
It only takes 5 minutes to setup a Turkish account for it to work.
Not exactly “smart delivery” eh 🙄
Slightly off topic. If I get the PS4 version I should be able to upgrade (under normal circumstances), but does this work the other way around? Can I get the PS5 version and download the PS4 version (disc). 🤷🏻♂️
@Waa-Laa I'm only guessing, but I would say no - the PS4 can't read uhd blu-ray discs, as far as I know.
I've been having this problem too; I just can't get my PS4 version of Valhalla to upgrade. I contacted Ubisoft and they told me to take it up with Sony; I contacted Sony and they told me to take it up with Ubisoft. 🤷
@ThaBEN no that doesn't work. I tried that. The option for free upgrade not coming up. Only on the PlayStation store its asking to pay full price. I managed to do it for spiderman miles morales but not ubisoft games
This is slightly off topic but this is also happening to a lot of indie games that were free with ps+ on ps4 its now asking to buy them saying error not compatible with ps5 and directs you to ps store to buy a ps5 version 😑
Create a Turkish PSN account, log in on the PS5, insert the disc and view the game on the store, it will then let you upgrade to the PS5 version... another 44gb if my memory serves me
@Tharsman In terms of the OS and functionality, most things about PS5 are seeming a bit rushed at the moment.
I don’t know why the focus is on these two games or Ubisoft - I have no PS5 upgrade option for Witcher 3 or Destiny 2
There is only one letter difference between "free" and "fee". Maybe they meant to charge us since day one and it was a typo. Ubisoft is pretty much French EA when it comes to greed
After seeing this article and went and did the Planet Coaster free upgrade. No issue downloading the PS5 version over copying the PS4 version from the disc.
@MassiveG Destiny 2 ps5 doesn't come out until December 10th (or somewhere near there) and I don't even know if Witcher had a date yet
Yeah, no mans sky installed both too. Don’t really mind as I needed it for VR, but strange it does that. Not as strange as games uninstalling randomly though, which is my main (only) problem currently
@ThaBEN Watch Dogs didn't even install on putting the disc in for me, I had to manually choose to install. Installed or not, still don't have an upgrade option though
@Spoonman-2 can you play it using your normal UK account then? Or do you have to keep switching between them?
This reminds me of the mess from a couple of days ago when the psn preorders of Cold Steel 4 simply did not work. We reported it days before the release date but it was finally fixed three days after the release date.
I mean ? The games launched pretty much in the ps5 window why not just buy the ps5 version ? I did and all I get is the ps5 game and it’s all been super slick
Yes once done with the upgrade no need for the account atall
I had issues with the upgrade on launch day because the console restarted during the download it broke the game and it wouldn't load. I deleted both copy's. Installed the ps4 version to play while I waited for the ps5 version to download and install and then it worked fine.
@Unffclcntrllerpd Because I wanted to play it that week? Not rocket science, is it?
@ThaBEN Will keep that in mind, thanks for the tip!
And everyone made fun of smart delivery talking about how it was just a marketing term... Except it isn't and it works..
I bought both these games on series x but also installed them on a base xbox and an x1x and the file sizes were all different because I got different versions based on the console.
@PossibLeigh I guess not , I was happy to wait but understand what your saying . I always want something new to open and play on a new machine
@Spoonman-2 has nothing to do with Smart delivery this is a bug on Ubisofts end
@Unffclcntrllerpd I specifically bought it early so I could have first hand comparison between the 4 and 5 version. And cos they said I’d be able to upgrade it for free. LIES.
Yup, I was just being silly, Smart Delivery is an Xboxism 🤠
I'm sure Ubisoft will fix it in the next couple of days.
Contacted Sony support and had a response telling me the issue only happens if you have a disc from a different region. This is not true, nor is it the case. Waiting for further update.
Thanks for reporting on this Guys might get them to fix it now!! Ubisoft Support on Twitter have ignored me for 4 days now 🤬🤬🤬
@Unffclcntrllerpd That's what Demon's Souls was for.
@PossibLeigh good shout , beautiful looking title
Got the same issue, thought it was just me. No response from Sony or Ubisoft, so thank you PushSquare!
Both mine upgraded fine did them both on the 19th, played WDL but haven't tried ACV yet
I am facing this issue, I don't see an option to upgrade to PS5 version.
I just want them to fix ac valhallas terrible hdr ,I shouldnt have to adjust my tv picture settings everytime I play the damn muddy blurry mess.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi it's why I'm opting digital for starters. Then upgrade to physical when the refresh consoles are out. Makes sence to me and buy the time they come out with a mid gen refresh u will get most the games half price or less. Seen as paying full retail for demon souls and spiderman ultimate at £140 is absolute nuts. But again consumerism got the better of me ✌️
Still waiting for another patch before I start this on PS4... the wait is killing me!
Was awful on the PS4 Pro, but much much better on the PS5
Did not work for me 🤬
Workaround doesn't work. Ubi support Twitter is an absolute joke 😡
Considering all of the software issues the community has been having (myself included) I’m honestly starting to believe that the system’s OS and Sony’s backend wasn’t ready for launch.
I’m starting to believe the system was probably going to release in March 2021 originally, but Microsoft’s decision earlier this year to launch in 2020 forced Sony’s hand.
That said, despite the issues I’ve had so far, I love the PS5.
just FYI - If you have a Revolut bank account it's worth creating a Turkish account anyway as you can get English language game downloads cheaper there. https://www.hotukdeals.com/discussions/new-method-no-vpn-required-buy-from-any-playstation-psn-region-inc-indonesia-turkey-at-face-value-with-disposable-revolut-virtual-visa-3458645
@Bobskie77 I paid 60 for ultimate edition ps5 Spiderman as I haven't played the first game, not too bad of a price for both games
What tosh! 'Investigating'. Some button that needed pushing hasn't been pushed. Get off your behinds and push the button! Plus, view product takes me to the store page where there is still no option to upgrade. How hard is it to get an employee in Europe to check that out?
Signed, Mr G. Rumpy
Spot on sir!
@Spoonman-2 Yeah no they need to fix it im not jump through hoops too play my legal stuff.
I could not upgrade Miles Morales from physical PS4 version to PS5, you need to make a Turkey account, then you will be able to.
@Lukasamba Had no problem with Miles snd Spidernan. But have the Ubisoft issue I just pass it of as classic Ubisoft buggy and a mess.
There’s still no solution for the same reason Amazon never “put it right”. They are big enough not to care, can get away with paying lip service to the media and you’ll go away soon enough.
Disgrace that this still hasn't been fixed.
It seems like both consoles have had a lot of launch issues. Glad to be forced to wait, and happily, for the next batch of consoles. And for those that say "I haven't come across XX issue" knowing my luck, I'd come across ALL of them.
... check game AC VALHALLA
... check version PS4
... check PS5 upgrade - false
... download PS5 upgrade
where is the problem?
Come on Sony! Fix your store!!!
And that’s exactly why I was smart and stopped buying PS4 games in like September and just waited for PS5 games to release to buy things again
This combined with the big PS5 downgrade on Valhalla makes it seem like Ubisoft are trying to dissuade people from the PS5 versions.
I've heard that is because retailers have sold the Turkish version of the license which came accidently packed in the UK boxes, which is why it works on Turkish PSN. And it's only a particular version of CUSA that's affected.
PS. I am one of those affected and it's pretty annoying, but I just used the Turkish PSN.
Hmm I must have been lucky when I did it, I got the ps4 version the week before, after receiving my ps5 I popped in the ps4 disc it installed the ps4 version. Then going to the game on my menu, there was a button that said "ps5 upgrade" which brought me to the store to buy it, cost was free and it then downloaded the game again after which point I needed to then choose version
Overall such a messy launch with everything
But mostly sonys fault I think giving release date less then 2 months before roll out, a decision that boggles me
Absolute joke, been trying to get the ps5 upgrade for watch dogs legion. Nothing works, I’ve seen that you can make a Turkish account, but I cannot be bothered to do that. And then again, we shouldn’t have to do that really. I’d rather just wait for the ps5 upgrade & play miles morales instead, which is brilliant so far.
Right now it seems that buying only physical PS5 games is worth
cannot believe Ubisoft has not fixed this still 😡they just ignore everyone on Twitter. I really want to play the game now!
I have Legion coming as a Xmas Present might change that now after this shambles.
@Lukasamba only with Ubisoft games all the others I have worked fine on the upgrade.
Anyone else think this is intentional?
I've never really had issues with ubisoft games on my ps4 but on the pc..bought a msi gtx970 gpu and i got farcry 4 free...was a right ***** to get working..i got assassins creed 3 free with a promo code..was a right ***** to get running..got the crew free with uplay..never worked at all and i got for honor free and i never got that working..ubisoft were completley and utterly awful with their help and any work around never worked..i gave up so in one way i am not surprised they ***** up their big ps5 debut..
@David187 I had a problem with Miles Morales as well, couldn't get a free upgrade from PS4 disc, so i believe it's more a bug with PS5 specifically
@Lukasamba mine worked fine
They're a terrible company, why do people constantly buy their games at launch and expect them to work?
@David187 So basically it means that every game can have problems with free upgrade, i believe it is a bug with PS5 itself
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L Yeah, but i had a problem with Miles Morales too, guy in reddit said it had this problem with free upgrade with miles morales as well and making Turkey account didn't worked for him
Received this from Playstation Support -
"The option is only visible, to upgrade if using an account registered to the same region as the disc is from.
Can you confirm if your disc is from a different region from the region of your account?
You can locate the disc code on the disc itself or the spine of the case."
Says Region 2 on my case & disc. ( I initially thought they meant the item code, numpty)
I've only just been able to play COD Black Ops PS5 version although I brought the digital cross gen version. It actually prompted me on the game. Probably down to me not knowing what to do though to be fair.
@Lukasamba you're talking nonsense. I upgraded miles Morales PS4 disc just fine, no Turkish account required. This is an Ubi problem.
Luckily for me watch dogs legion is the only game I brought on PS4 to upgrade to ps5 wish for me is also not working but I brought the ps5 version of assassin’s creed Valhalla so ok there.
@Robinsad Not here in the Netherlands its a faulty product. So money back by Sony or Ubisoft.
@Lukasamba everyone who has UK PS4 disc of Valhalla or Legion is UNABLE to upgrade. The only person who had/has trouble with upgrading PS4 Miles Morales is you. Go figure.
So I keep seeing this is an Ubisoft issue. I also have the exact same issue with Miles Morales. The ps4-ps5 upgrade option just does not appear. The disk version i have is EU and i live in the EU so there should be no conflict.
I have set up the Turkish account in order to solve this issue for Valhalla but it does not work for Miles Morales. Its pretty obvious that this is a PSN issue as we are creating different psn account to bypass this issue for Valhalla. Either way, Ubisoft is completely useless as always and sony is yet to answer...
@MuppetThumper Oh yeah ? And why the hell should i lie you idiot, check comments, @Flamethrow also had the same problem. By the way it turns out, it could be due to region differences, because my account is UK, but disc is Scandinavian.
@God_of_Nowt My account is UK region, but disc is Scandinavian. Didn't worked with free upgrade, but making a Turkey account and with it claiming free upgrade did worked, but i saw that for other people making a Turkey account for Miles Morales didn't worked. Glad it worked for me
I'd be interested to see if these disk copies of AC Valhalla all came from the same retailer. I got mine from ShopTo and I can't upgrade.
@God_of_Nowt I have a Sackboy scandinavian disc as well, but it worked with free upgrade, i have claimed it, however Miles Morales didn't worked, very strange, i haven't tried ubisoft titles so can't say about them.
This is fixed now. Downloaded the free version today.
@Spoonman-2 Just had this same issue, as soon as I got onto the PSN store in the Turkish account it allowed me to download the PS5 version.
@BaronSqwelch Still only giving me the option to buy the full game :/
@Milomaine Strange. I put the disk in and on the homepage it had a box with "free" on the left and "£59.99" on the right. I didn't go to the store.
Of course the trophies have glitched out on me so shouldn't have bothered 😂
Apparently something has happened to the supply chain when Ubisoft shipped these physical copies to retailers.
Check the spine of your physical box copies guys.
If it says CUSA-13034. You should have no issue getting the ps5 upgrade as this is the 'REAL' UK licensed version we should of all got.
If its CUSA-13035, its the Turkish version (hence ubisofts advice to sign in to PSN Turkish account as this version is recognised by that region as being authorised for a PS5 upgrade and not the UK PSN). I believe this is the version most people have received from retailers.
People have contacted Ubisoft Customer Services in regards to this and they have pushed blame on retailers advising customers to get refunds from them.
A real mess up indeed.
I was going to get the PS4 version and upgrade since it was cheaper that way but at the last minute I found the PS5 version going cheap. Really dodged a bullet there. But it's so weird how this only seems to affect people in one region and that Ubisoft have no idea why.
My biggest question is: who is the responsible party for that problem? Is it Ubisoft or Sony? Is it an intern who made a mistake in specific countries?
I guess I have more than one question about this. Ubisoft can't seem to get a break, and even mostly finished games (unlike AC Unity) are having big launch problems
Thank you for being one of the only news websites following this issue.
Same issue with Rainbow Six Siege now. PS5 upgrade is available but crashes on startup every time. Ubisoft are aware according to various forums. Do they even have a QA team though?!
It has been fixed!
...but the trophies I got in the 30 hours I pumped into the PS4 version on ps5 didn’t transfer
@Its_fixed Hmm that's odd. It finally gave me the free update and I also got the trophies. They all came up one after the other just after the game loaded in. I had to go and delete the trophy screenshots as they were all the same picture.
@Milomaine ah bugger maybe I'll try uninstall and install again tonight. Not sure what is wrong there.
My upgrade was working yesterday for the first time since Monday when I got my console I installed last night and it worked fine I've come to play it this afternoon and its gone back to the ps4 version on my home screen 🤬🤬
@get2sammyb my PS5 copy was available yesterday just a heads up fixed at last 👍
@DanB189 go-to game version & pick PS5 hope this helps. for some reason, the PS5 always wants to add the PS4 copy as well hope Sony fix that from being automatic.
@David187 yeah jts working again now I had to reinstall it again cause it was giving me the option to choose what version I wanted to play
@DanB189 ok cool glad it working again for you. 👍
