Sony enjoyed the biggest hardware launch ever in France last month, as the PlayStation 5 sold 107,000 units at launch. That narrowly edged out the previous record holder, the Nintendo Switch, which managed 105,000 units a few years ago. For comparison, the PlayStation 4 sold 90,000 units in the European country at launch.
The console is completely sold out, so this is more a reflection of supply than necessarily demand. PS5 has also broken records in the United States and the UK, so it’s fair to say that a lot of units were shipped. In comparison, the Xbox Series X|S sold just 37,000 units at launch in France, but it too is also sold out right now.

Just imagine the numbers if more consoles were available. My mate thought if he waited he would easily pick up a PS5 before Xmas boy was he wrong. They are like gold dust at present.
I’m really surprised MS Made so few consoles available across Europe. Wonder if that is the case in the US and elsewhere too. It’s not like they don’t have the money for manufacturing, so I can only presume they made about as many as they thought they could sell or they messed up badly somewhere. Or maybe they just wanted to allocate most stock to the US. Really is a strange one.
I’m not even going to comment on comparisons with the Switch as, for so many reasons, to compare the two devices makes little sense
@Arugula Exactly I dont think we will have regular stock until maybe Summer 2021. What is clear is the huge demand at present.
From the source article it's worth noting the numbers at the end of 2013 were 240 000 for PS4 vs 126 000 for XB1. They dont have data for launch week 2013.
PS5 sold 107k in launch week only.
I think the main point is PS5 is breaking launch records everywhere despite all the FUD (Sorry I'm not sure what other word would be best for all the 'doubts' that were going on this year).
@thefourfoldroot Xbox has allegedly been in manufacturing for a much shorter window of time, so they didn't have as many units to go around. PS did have more units all around than Xbox on almost all markets.
It's nothing to do with how many they thoght they could sell. Infinite money still can't buy you last minute manufacturing bandwidth.
@thefourfoldroot France is mainly Nintendo and Sony land. MS is only strong in Britain and in UK and almost nowhere else, at least in Europe. Here in Germany, Playstation is king, and having an Xbox is weird, even Nintendo struggles.
This is just a matter of available stock. This means absolutely nothing. We'll see how sales evolve within the next few years
@Max_the_German
Maybe, but all consoles are sold out, meaning in this case MS sold a third of what Sony did because they either didn’t make or allocate enough.
@Medic_Alert to be fair, and I know this is subjective, I don't think it's anywhere near as ugly in person. Slim will have to wait until the same processing performance can be achieved by a much lower power APU, because all that space is used for cooling, the electrics are a tiny percentage of the overall unit size, unlike previous generations.
@Medic_Alert I told him to try and get one day one but he didn't listen. Totally rubbed it in by sending him many demon souls and Spiderman pics lol. Have to admit though I thought they would have more stock on the run up to Xmas but guess they struggling in production understandably.
PS5 technically beat the switch everywhere. The Switch only "won" because the PS5 was out of stock. Had the PS5 been in stock, it would have won in every countries.
I hope sony improve this stock situation soon.
@thefourfoldroot Xbox really focuses in the US. The console is not very popular in Europe I think.
@Medic_Alert I mean I'm not going to call it a stunning piece of modern artistic design or anything, but it's not offensive to look at, especially when in the shade of a deep shelf, where it kinda subtly reflects the colour of the wood.
@TG16_IS_BAE I mean I care about our European neighbors, and they have a decent indie scene
@Medic_Alert now on that we agree
@theheadofabroom I’m joking, just looking for whooshes.
I had a laugh this morning at my local wal-mart. I was their for food shopping and i took a walk around electronics. Its funny of course we all know wally world wont sell any series x/ps5 in store but they had like 10 nintendo switches for sale. So why not sell the switch online too because covid reason eyeroll i should have brought a switch then turn around and trade it in at my local gamestop
@TG16_IS_BAE eh, I'll give you a pass then, but if there's nothing to differentiate your joke from jingoism or xenophobia it's possibly not a very good joke, or at least a poor delivery. '/s' or some emojis might have helped people read your tone
Really makes you wonder how high the numbers would be if Sony actually had enough stock to meet demand. When the PS6 comes along in however many years, I hope they just swing for the fences and mass produce tens of millions in advance.
I console launches sell through stock available these days, Even the WiiU sold out in many places. Its the first year sales that really count, providing they are able to stock by that point. Switch was out of stock for months and months
@theheadofabroom I have to say, to my eye, it looks far worst in person even than it did in pictures. Far to say I'm not a fan at all of its looks. I ended up running it out of the coms cupboard. Its a pain to change disks but at least it doesn't assault my eyeballs!
@theheadofabroom he's a sad man looking to troll some people to feel better about his day. It's all he does here. It's best to ignore him, I'd say. It's what moderators do, it seems.
I love the look of the PS5 & like even more how quiet it is.
