The sales results for November 2020 are in, and the PlayStation 5 achieved the “highest launch month unit and dollar sales for a video game hardware platform in US history”, beating out the previous record held by the PlayStation 4. It couldn’t, however, beat the Nintendo Switch in unit sales – although Sony’s new console was, of course, supply constrained. Estimates peg the next-gen console's total tally between 1.1 million and 1.3 million units.
With the continued success of the Nintendo Switch and the launch of the Xbox Series X|S, consumer spending was up 58 per cent year-over-year, with a November record of $1.4 billion. In and among that, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War did incredibly well, instantly becoming the best-selling title of 2020, and beating out Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, which finished second in November’s software charts. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales squeezed into third, and it even outsold Ubisoft’s Norse open worlder specifically on PlayStation platforms.
Elsewhere, Demon’s Souls debuted in 10th position, while Ghost of Tsushima continues to sell really well, finishing up in 20th place overall. One other point worthy of note, before we share the all-important charts, is that Sony’s new DualSense controller “achieved the highest launch month unit and dollar sales for a gamepad in US history”. A big month for PlayStation bank balance, then, overall.

Surely if NPD sales for 2020 is all platforms then Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima being 5th and 6th is an amazing achievement against multi plat juggernauts like Fifa and Assassins Creed.
Also love that there are 4 single player games (5 if you include Mario?) in the top ten.
@StonyKL It is a huge achievement! No question about it!
i hope sony will fix the supply problems soon cause people will eventually get what they can not what they want.
56hrs in Valhalla, still loving it. Glad to see it already in the top 10 for 2020.
It’s also double the price of a Switch. Gotta love sales comparisons when they never take price of admission into account
If only I could find one.
@2cents And it's more than twice as good!
😜
@2cents It also costs more to manufacture than a Switch so it all evens out
I wonder how many of those 1.1 to 1.3 million units are actually alive and active right now.
Seems like many are sitting in people's garages and basements waiting to be sold at %300 their value.
I really hope Sony will start having supply that meets demand in January. It would be nice to be able to walk into a store and actually pick one up rather than trying to fight off bots.

Question:
If you already have a PS4 Pro, Xbox One S, is it really necessary to get a Nintendo Switch?
@GamingFan4Lyf Yeah - even a wait-in-line option would be something. It would give the retailer time to verify that it is a real person and not a bot, and it would secure your system, even if it isn't till Jan or Feb.
But this "online only drop it like its hot while all the programs constantly monitor stock and bot purchase like crazy" game we are playing has to end. right?
@KnightRider1982 seeing your profilepic you are either trolling or a fanboy that doesn't like Switch and got angry by reading the Switch sales (not English).
@KnightRider1982 Yep, switch is also great console.
Do they count Switch Lite sales with the regular Switch, because that would explain a lot about their higher sales and I know some crazy Nintendo fanboys who just buy the console just to collect them or sell in the future
@KnightRider1982 Yup, switch exclusive games are great, it's worth it to get the switch only for the exclusive games. It's a great companion console to ps4 or 5.
@2cents does Switch count factor the Switch Lite?
@Juvenlast 10k plus sitting on Ebay.
@KazooieTooie
As a matter of fact, I do like the Switch due to the fact that the console has Super Mario All Stars 3D.
@KnightRider1982
Necessary? No. Highly recommended? Yes
And I thought America was team xbox.
Looks like nobody is
I predicted record breaking many months ago when the FUD and fake news were saying there would be very limited quantities with only 5 million units order in production.
@KnightRider1982 only you can answer that. It depends how much you love gaming or if you want to play on the go/in another room while the tv is used. I have all 3 and love it and it’s worth it to me.
There’s a lot of amazing titles you can only play on switch, as well as many that are brilliant to play on the move and some that are straight up better on a small handheld.
Though honestly with COVID I’ve spent more time at home and thus would usually play PlayStation or Xbox on the big tv instead.
It’s a great system but only you can be the judge for you.
@get2sammyb to be clear this is only US sakes correct?
@StonyKL Why WOULDN'T you include Mario as a single player game???
@Snick27 absolutely, just like total PS4 sales included slims and Pro models
@KnightRider1982 I'd argue a switch is more important than an Xbox to own if you already had a PS4.
The switch exclusives absolutely annihilate any Microsoft offering. Imo.
@2cents Yeah because the cheapest hardware always sells the most right? That must be why iPhones are so unpopular and why the GameCube outsold the PS2! The Switch has so many more games worth playing right now and a USP of also being a handheld that Sony and Microsoft can't compete with. Simple as that.
@__jamiie if only it was that simple - Nintendo carved its own niche market with rabid fanboys who buy multiple pieces of hardware, Sony has carved its own path as a premium experience with games made for adults, and Microsoft has the gamepass/ streaming market cornered. They all exist in their own lane, so try comparing sales again and see how foolish you look
I don't look foolish at all. I own all platforms and really don't care about one company outselling the other. If I worked for one of them or was a fanboy maybe I would care. If Nintendo's success was built on 'rabid fanboys' as you so eloquently describe them, then how do you explain the Wii U? You also say 'Sony has carved its own path as a premium experience with games made for adults'. The way you subtly sneer at other platforms massively sounds like fanboy talk to me. Why do you care so much about Sony selling more PlayStations than any other console??? Does it make you warm and happy? It's a piece of tech designed to play games. Nothing more. It's not your family. It's not your friends. If you stopped playing PlayStation tomorrow nobody would care or even notice. Surely a healthy games industry is one where all the competition does well.
@KnightRider1982 then you answered your own question! Sure, I wont buy a handheld for one game but DK country, Animal Crossing are too good to ignore. I have a Switch and Xbox one s (because it was cheap as pie) so if you have the money buy a Switch
Nintendo switch kept its records because we're in a pandemic the demand is really high for ps5
@KnightRider1982 yes
If you love gaming then it will provide you with a unique games and experience not found on any other system plus the charm and some light hearted co-op experiences to enjoy with non gamer family members or children.
