We know very little about Square Enix's mysterious PlayStation 5 console exclusive Project Athia, but one new detail dropped today sheds some light on how long Sony has locked out other consoles from playing. In a New and Upcoming games trailer for PS5, the Japanese giant states: "Not available on other consoles until at least 24 months after release date". It will also launch day and date on PC with Sony's latest machine.
This is the same video which confirms Gran Turismo 7 for next year alongside many other upcoming PS5 titles. That includes Resident Evil Village and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. This isn't the only exclusivity deal Sony has with Square Enix as Final Fantasy XVI will also be a PS5 console exclusive for a currently unspecified time. How do you react to this news? Another day, another timed exclusive!
That's a long time.
And no doubt people will moan how anti consumer it is. Despite the game coming to other platforms eventually. Can't say the same for Bethesda titles once MS get their grubby hands on them.
@AdamNovice Ghostwire Tokyo’s literally a PS5 and PC exclusive. And is a Bethesda game.
Either way I'm interested in this game.
usualy timed exclusives are a 1 year deal no? perhaps part of sony's third party deals include longer timed exclusivity terms.
@nessisonett You know what I mean
Can't wait to pirate the ***** out of this game when it comes out on PC.
@AdamNovice I don’t, Bethesda are first party, square enix are 3rd, not even a fair comparison and Bethesda come out on top.
@Robinsad The point is Xbox gamers can play it eventually. What if Playstation gamers want to play the next elder Scrolls or DOOM game? (Which was a reasonable expectation a few months ago) Yet people seem to have more problems with timed exclusivity that would be on other systems eventually then permanent exclusivity from multiplatform publishers.
Another multiplatform non exclusive game! Like FF16!
@AdamNovice As of right now. Playstation gamers will still able to play the next DOOM and Elder Scrolls. Microsoft said that they won't be taking these franchises away from Playstation just like they haven't stopped releasing Minecraft on Playstation.
@AdamNovice sighs the difference is whose footing the bill for the game. Timed exclusives are still games whose bill is paid by a third party, and the timed part generally accounts for the lost in sales but not the production cost. Unless it’s a case of SFV and that said exclusive. Bethesda games are now going to be paid for with MS’s money ergo they should be able to decide what happens to that money, but keep in mind that’s up in the air on what will and won’t happen.
@nessisonett Because those deals were made before the Zenimax purchase.
@AdamNovice
Yes, it's timed exclusive. Maybe the devs have to wait 2 years for the tools to be able to run it 🤔
Who knows.. haha
Edit
In before some fanatics come at me. It.s.a.joke.
I must say I don’t have the same aversion to timed exclusives as others, as long as they are for a significant time. A few months still means games on other systems will need to be made concurrently. Two years means it’s made with a focus, and can then be ported with a focus. Plus it’ll be out earlier than if they needed to release on multiple systems simultaneously or within a short time of each other.
@mousieone Yet games like Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield were already announced so it's reasonable to expect a Playstation version should be made. And if not then I hope the same level of outrage happens cos if not then it'll show the level of double standards that the media has.
@AdamNovice hmm Again money which is seemingly being if ignored here in your counter arguments.
TES 6 is barely in pre production (if that) so again MS’s money will be funding that game, not Bethesda’s. I should hope I have say in where my money goes.
Starfield, honestly, depends on how far along that game actually is. But again we don’t know. I guess I can kind of see an outrage issue if the game launches early next year with no PS support in the horizon. Although in all cases where that has occurred MS had let the game finish out it’s commitments Outer Worlds? Wasteland 3? Death loop?
If it’s a late 2021/2022 game then yes MS funded a significant portion of the project. It’s all a matter of money, and whose paying the bills. Doesn’t matter what was said when it got announced. It’s not a media issue literally it’s who funded the game project.
@Subsided @AdamNovice edited his comment. It didn’t read like that before.
Two years? That's not so bad. It probably won't be done for another 7 anyway.
@AdamNovice what if Xbox players want to play uncharted or last of us? Sony didn’t found naughty dog they bought it. At least the games you mentioned will come to pc and they haven’t even ruled out PlayStation yet. That’s a very different situation to this.
I’m against timed exclusivity really, my only potential thought is would the game exist without the funding from Sony? Maybe they guarantee income from Sony balanced the risk of creating this.
My concern is people who only play on xbox care that it will be released in 2 years time. 1 year most people can muster the wait (I have waited on a few games that were a year exclusive on the epic game store) but 2 years seems to me they should just make it console exclusive at that stage.
That roughly 30 seconds announcement trailer made me somewhat interested...put it into my wish list. As for me, in 2021 there’re at least 5 games (Gow:R, Horizon:FW, Harry Potter, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Ratchet & Clank) I have to play with.....the Returnal looks promising....anyway I must see first what is it exactly.
@nessisonett Technically Ghostwire Tokyo is a timed exclusive from what the trailer above says.
My concern would be that it might indicate it's another bloody MMORPG, just like that Chrono Odyssey game.
Did Sony really throw more money in the Garbage for a game that isn't even exclusive, releasing on PC by default makes it a multiplatform game 🤦
Organic growth!
@SilentHunter382 It depends. Everyone has huge backlogs, especially Xbox gamers with GamePass.
To this day I still have not gotten around to playing any of the tomb raider games. As far as I care, MS could have had a 4 year exclusive deal and I still wouold had ended playing it whenever I wanted.
