Sony boss Jim Ryan has weighed in on the latest “console war” between the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X, stating that he doesn’t like the term and that “it’s great there’s competition”. Speaking with Russian outlet TASS, the executive explained that strong products from the Japanese giant’s competitors keeps the company on its toes – and helps it to avoid getting complacent.
“[Console wars] is not a term I ever use or actually like,” he said. “For me, it’s great that there’s competition. I think it makes us work harder. It avoids us getting complacent. It’s great that the consumer has a choice. I think that’s wonderful. We’re happy and we’re proud with what we have.”
It’s a good response from Ryan, and a reminder that a strong and vibrant games industry is better for all of us; the more players there are – regardless of platform – the better the software and services will be. In fact, the executive may have already teased upcoming initiatives driven by competition: speaking to the same media outlet he hinted PlayStation may have a response to Game Pass in the works.

The article headline and tag line contradict each other and is not what he said if you read the article.
Headline makes it sound like he's moaning about having to work hard haha
Pretty bad title just to get clicks probably.
Yup, rather than "war" it's just normal competition, which is great for us customer
Hey it's an interesting article (the source)
Seems you picked the least interesting point where JR answer is basically 'YES'
The question was 'Is the console war still on with Microsoft then?'
@captainsandman Not as bad as the article on the Xbox 'sister' site listing 10 reasons why Xbox Serial Killer X is better than PS5.
😉
Should put the word “term” in your title. It currently comes off like click bait.
@Col_McCafferty
What is 'Xbox Serial Killer X ' ?
The next mid gen upgrade they are working on?
@JJ2 Probably.
What’s amazing is the PS4 blew away the “competition” and still provided game of the year contenders in its FINAL year before next gen... Imagine if Xbox actually competes this gen
"We don't like consoles wars"
But we would still see exclusive content to our system for 1 year to piss off the other aka COD with its Zombie content which is a stupid idea. Oh and probably more exclusive content from Destiny 2
PushSquare: We don't like console wars.
PureXbox: 10 reasons why the Series X is better than PS5!!
"We don't like console wars"
"With that being said please look forward to like 10 multiplatform games we're turning into timed exclusives that you can only buy on our console for 6 months to a year. Ya like Final Fantasy?"
Nah in all seriousness I get what he's saying. It's stupid for companies doing business to have that kind of animosity towards each other. I doubt even Ken Kutaragi actively had a vendetta against Microsoft or anything, and his cockiness on display was purely just for the camera to give off the image Sony was the better option
Of course we know how that ultimately turned out when PS3 launched so they needed that piece of humility pie
He's not wrong. Getting too comfortable isn't always a good thing in this industry. Knowing you have to be better than your competition makes you want to work harder.
@Deadlyblack Sony should know that better than anyone lmao
@Nakatomi_Uk I see that as a small bonus for PS owners. I doubt most Xbox owners are too fussed.
You can be competitive with someone/something, without hating them.
Also, moneyhatting isn't being competitive, it's essentially trying to trip up your opponent.
Some people on here are pretty naive when it comes to business.
🤦
Jim doesn't need console wars. He's been at war with the rest of Playstation leadership for years now!
@TheFrenchiestFry Well the hatred toward Nintendo was real back in the day considering all that happened with the real original Play Station..... Yamauchi pretty much operated as a yakuza patriarch.
@NEStalgia Ok that was actually justified, Nintendo basically backhanded them while they were collaborating, of course Sony would take great offense to the fact they were having a one night stand with another developer behind the scenes before abruptly terminating their contract. It's like an ugly breakup
@TheFrenchiestFry As I said, Yamauchi.... But Sony stepped into that one. They did their contract loophole thing they're known for to attempt quietly take control of Nintendo's IPs, in the fine print, and it almost went unnoticed until the 11th hour.
So they earned Yamauchi's wrath. But only Yamauchi could shove it back in their faces in such an utterly humiliating way that you almost feel bad for Kutaragi. Those two companies deserved each other, back then...
That article title is criminal.
Evidenced by last gen where the PS4 trounced Xbox easy and basically did nothing outside the bare minimun.
@Col_McCafferty lol given that the PlayStation 5 launch single handily brought every retail site and most delivery services site crashing to a halt. Something xbox launch didn't seem to do on the same scale. I think we can safely say it doesnt matter articles they write right. PlayStation is crushing Microsoft xbox
Slipping Jimmy actually managed to say something that makes sense? I'm impressed.
@Menchi It was my favorite generation with games but your talk is always anti Sony i really don't know what your issue is?
This header is indeed the same is as a cheap as the fake headers at all those crappy rumor sites. Is this the end of... , .... is in trouble.
@Deadlyblack. See madden
@Menchi it's because they did beyond minimum is why they trounced Xbox
Too ad he's not concerned with getting the PS5 to gamers and not scammer bots 10,000 for sale on Ebay US.
