To be honest, we’re not entirely sure why you’d want to do this, but you can use Remote Play to stream games from your PlayStation 4 to your PlayStation 5 console. Given that the next-gen system is completely backwards compatible with PS4 games, this is a curious quirk, but the manufacturer points out that it will allow you to save valuable storage space on your new device.
There’s no word on whether you’ll be able to use Remote Play to stream PS5 games to your PS4, but that seems like a somewhat more useful feature to us – especially if you want to play a title like Demon’s Souls in another room, but don’t want to lug your hardware around all the time. Can you see yourself using Remote Play to enjoy PS4 games on your PS5? Let us know.

I still have my fingers crossed for Vita Remote Play support on PS5 but I really doubt it. It’s a shame, I played some games perfectly well with the Vita!
@nessisonett this is what has kept me from preordering. I haven’t gotten a 4 yet, but remoting to my Vita is viable to me. If 5 could, I’d put down for that, but should 4 get that price cut I’ve been itching for the last few years, it’s a better option for me. I play portably nearly 100% of the time.
All I care about is Remote Play from my PC to PS5.
I have a feeling that is a way off - if at all.
I know there's an incredibly slim chance, but Vita remote play support would just complete the package for me on PS5. I used Remote Play extensively on PS4, even just this year when playing through FFVII Remake and Persona 5 Royal.
I know from a business standpoint it wouldn't make sense given the Vita just got officially discontinued, but I'd rather remote play on Vita than anything else.
@GamingFan4Lyf I'm pretty sure Remote Play is a thing on Windows PCs. It's a standalone program to my knowledge
@TheFrenchiestFry @GamingFan4Lyf Yep, I’ve used Remote Play on my laptop a bit alongside PS Now. They work alright, especially with a wired connection either end.
I guess that's kinda cool, if I have my ps4 downstairs and my ps5 up, that ain't a bad idea. And it also means that you can stream your disc games if you have a PS5 Digital, so that's also kinda cool.
@TheFrenchiestFry Yes, I use Remote Play for PS4 on my laptop often.
It's Remote Play for PS5 I am concerned about.
If they're saying it saves storage, is that confirmation you can't run ps4 games from an external drive and just plug it in?
@NEStalgia Some people don't have external storage but have decent internal storage in their PS4. So no. You can do that as they've already confirmed it.
I don't see how you would be able to stream PS5 games to PS4 as the controllers are much different and PS5 games may have feedback essential to gameplay that the PS4 controller cannot replicate.
@Jaz007 Ahh, good. That's a good point. All my games are on external, digital, so the thought of having to download them all again is pulse raising
Streaming from the old box to new box still seems like an odd idea.... If both boxes are set up, why bother with latency and video compression? But at least we're finding out about features and they're thinking outside the box.......... Literally!
I have 1gbps Internet and remote play is still unreliable, the lag is too great. They really need to make it better.
The only thing I found remote play reliable for was farming resources in FFXIV. I probably missed out on some "premium" strikes, but a grind is a grind, and this was a way to do it while actually enjoying life.
@Luminous117 but then why not just play on the PS4 as you effectively are anyway?
I genuinely don't see a point in this at all, to do this then obviously you still have to keep your PS4, those ganes then aren't taking any advantage of the PS5 and your experience will be worse then if you just were playing on the PS4 itself
I hope for smooth remote play for Mobile Android 8.1 with wireless dualshock support.
Yes, I have wanted PS5 Remote Play news for many months. At the moment, I'm almost feeling trolled.😐😅
@nessisonett @itsacardgame same here - as I often mention (to the point where others are probably sick of it), Vita Remote Play support is what's gonna make or break the entire PS5 deal for me... but between the handheld's discontinuation and Sony's longtime stepchild treatment of it, the chances look VERY slim. No puns intended.
So I can play Joe's Diner on the PS5 as long as I don't get rid of my PS4. Huzzah!
@nessisonett unfortunately the left stick on my vita has recently decided that i only want to run in one direction from now on. Absolutely gutted as i love my vita.
I don't see a reason why you wouldn't be able to stream PS5 games on the Vita. Would be a cool feature for all 3 of us that own a one
Long live the Vita!!!
@Luminous117 thats the thing, you're not playing it on the latest hardware. Its just streaming from your PS4 which is playing the game
Remote play to VITA hadn’t been very reliable for me, but maybe the WIFI 6 in the PS5 would making it better.
My PS5 and PS4 are going to be right next to each other connected to the same TV so I have little use for this, but I can see it being good for people who have their systems in different rooms.
As to streaming the other way, between 4 and 5, I’m guessing not unless the Dualsense works on the PS4.
I won’t need to save space as I only play a few games at a time anyway, the standard storage in PS5 is more than enough for the single user, but people who share it with a large family or several roommates, that might be good too.
Sony's obviously only doing so people can still play the masterpiece Afro Samurai 2 Revenge of Kuma on the PS5
I use remote play for PS4 on my phone and iPad a lot so more options are always good.
Think this is really cool and has confirmed my decision to get a PS5 digital edition and not to trade in my PS4 for it. It is a nice feature and gives me another reason to keep the PS4 around too. Go headless on the PS4 and you free up another HDMI port as well (and basically makes your PS5 two consoles in one). Four reasons for me:
1) extra storage - if we get 660gb storage in the PS5 and 500gb in the PS4 slim, that is more than enough for me and I'm never going to have to worry about upgrading storage at all (will keep costs down).
2) as I'm likely getting the digital edition PS5, I still have access to a disc drive on the PS4 (really handy for Blu-rays and DVDs). This is a big one for me as it allows me to get a next gen machine for £350 but not lose out on a feature I value.
3) PS vita remote play. This is not going to happen on the PS5 sadly (and I get it actually: the dual sense controller looks a step up from before and I'm not sure whether it would translate to a ps Vita) but it doesn't matter of I carry on doing it re: PS4. I use ps vita remote play a lot when away from home so will be able to keep doing that.
4) By keeping PS4, I still retain access to second hand physical games that are soon going to get very cheap. Yes, you lose would lose out in terms of PS5 boost tech (if you only have the PS5 digital) but it is not as if those games have suddenly become bad experiences because they are on the PS4.
Lastly, it is just cool to do. Handy I could access my PS4 from miles away if I needed to.
As others have said I'm more concerned if the PC and mobile apps will support PS5 remote play. I use the feature on my laptop and Android phone often on weekends.
As for the Vita it's 2.4ghz WiFi makes remote play very choppy for me when away from home. I would welcome an updated model with 5ghz support.
However given that Sony are stopping the ability to purchase Vita games remotely via web apps I see this as highly unlikely. Which is a real shame as I love my Vita.
I don't even necessarily want them to make new games. Just allow us to purchase all the same Vita games from the store and maybe add some more PS1 classics in there and I'll be happy.
Oh, and for the love of all Sony, use MicroSD cards please.
I love my vita, but why would anybody want to remote play on it, considering it lacks L2/L3/R2/R3? It's just too inconvenient. Rather have a stable app with dualsense support.
This is going to be useful for checking download progress on the PS5.
@BambooBushido as someone who worked on the first game and knows the person responsible for the second game:
HAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHHA!!!
Ps5 to ps4 would be useful. But I do t see myself using it this way around.
I don't see myself using it, I plan to move my external hard drive to the new console. The Pro is going to move in the bedroom instead of the regular Ps4, which, in turn is going to get stored for posterity. Keeping company to my other old consoles.
@KeanuReaves how are people buying this. The games are available on PS4. There is nothing vital here.
@tameshiyaku PlayAsia sells some decently comfortable L2R2 trigger grips that made playing games a lot easier, L3R3 takes a little getting used.
I can see this being a benefit for those who opted for the Digital Edition ps5 but have a substantial disc catalogue of ps4 games. Just stream those discs to ps5 for back compat instead. Probably laggy as hell though. 😒
This would be FAR more useful the other way around. Streaming PS5 on a PS4 (or Vita)
@Robinsad Not all of the games. That would be the point of streaming from PS5 to PS4.
@Robinsad Not all of them.
And some may literally rely on the haptics to communicate gameplay mechanics in a way you can't do with DS4
